I don't know what that dude is talking about. This video is great. As is the whole album. "Real Emotional Trash" is probably the best album Malkmus has ever made, Pavement albums included. Well.. maybe "Slanted and Enchanted" is the best, but RET is pretty close.

i think this is a really cool song. i haven't been a huge fan of stephen's post pavement shibang but i think for a poppy malkimus type song...it's pretty good. the video looks budget but who cares, it's charming. is part of it filmed in academy records in williamsburg?

(Snarkily) - God forbid an artist leave an influential band and pursue a solo career. No matter what he/she does it will never compare to what they did in the past.

Or at least that is what I want to say.

The sad truth is that it is rare for an artist to find the artistic success as a solo artist they found as a member of a band. I could make a list a mile long. No one wants to hear Chris Cornell post-grunge, when are the Talking Heads getting back together, Waters and Gilmour suck solo, Frank Black is unlistenable. We all know the score.

Personally, I think that Malkmus bucks the trend. His solo stuff has consistently gotten better and better, moving further and further away from the Pavement sound. Malkmus has carved out a solid body of work on his own, culminating with the terrific Real Emotional Trash. I would not say that Malkmus & the Jicks are better than Pavement, no more than I would say the Raconteurs are better than the White Stripes, but he (like Jack White) has certainly created a body of music that deserves to be considered on its own merits.

Self Titled was good but it just sounded like pavement songs without the rest of pavement....Pig Lib was the best SM&Jicks and it's been all downhill from there.

i still like face the truth and RET, but the lyrics on the new one are way more retarded than cheeky and provocative.

That white dude in that one band.

Crooked Rain, Brighten the Corners, Pig Lib and Real Emotional Trash are his 4 best albums, basically a 4-part trilogy (quadrology?) of guitarsomefulness.

"Gardenia" sounds more like a Face the Truth song than a RET song, odd choice for a single, but nice video. Greg Gillis is the MALKMUS OF LAPTOPS!

OK, OK. . . here it goes. I'm closer to 40 than I am 30. Love Pavement. . . Probrably was buying the singles around 1990-91ish. . . demolition plot J-7, Dancing with the Elders, Trigger Cut. Anyway I don't know if you can compare what Pavement did for indie as to what Malkmus is doing now. I think Malkmus solo started to get really cool around PIG LIB and has reached its peak with RET. It's obviously better for all of us to live in the present and not revel too closely in the old days. Be here now. RET and Wowie Zowie are my favorite of every record Malkmus has been a part of. S&E, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and Face the Truth fall closely behind.
