Women @ Knitting Factory, NYC (BV CMJ) - pics

photos by Kyle Dean Reinford, words by Andrew Frisicano

Women

Women played the Knitting Factory Tap Room on Saturday (10/25), early evening, as part of BV's CMJ day party. Hawking their new Jagjaguwar released self-titled debut, the band split its sound between downtown arty and straight-up psych-pop. Somewhere in there Women found the perfect recipe of indie buzz bands (Interpol guitars, Panda Bear vocals) to make single "Back Rice" crackle with sonic anticipation (it being one of the most whistleable songs I've heard in a while). Predictably, it came at the end of the set. Live, Women sound tight, and if you're a sucker for bands in small spaces like me, check out Women soon.

The Mae Shi played right after Women, but due do some last minute changes, one floor down.

We also caught Women at Cake Shop earlier in the week.

One of the finest bands I've heard play during all the CMJ madness. Outstanding. Can't wait to hear the record.

Oh and what's with the Teles lately? That's all anyone plays now. I wanna see some V necks and shit, shake it up. A gretsch.

I saw them at Danbro and have no idea what the hype is about.

Sorry, Nothing special.

Seriously! I only listen to special music--and these guys are nothing special. They lack retards. Oh, wow!

10:58 -- this is true. Low cretin quotient. They need to fall down more, babble, and sew stuffed animals to their pants.

that danbro show was a little weak but when i saw them at cake shop it was jaw droppingly good. solid band.

Pretty sure Chad was on tour elsewhere. Women are in Europe opening for him now.

Women at Cake Shop were awesome. Gimmetinnitus has a link to a recording of one of those shows:

I love these guys' sound. Glad they're getting the support they deserve.
