Yankees cancel final stadium event plans

Yankees

The Yankees have scratched plans to host one final farewell to the stadium, disappointing New Yorkers who were counting on a last visit to the House that Ruth Built.

The team had promised a final salute in November, which fans speculated would be a star-studded goodbye to the doomed stadium.

"The Yankees were considering having a charitable event at Yankee Stadium," team spokesman Howard Rubenstein told amNewYork, reading from a prepared statement. "However, the Yankees realize that the final event at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game, which in fact took place on Sept. 21, 2008."...

...No firm plans had been made for the stadium's goodbye, no tickets sold and no acts booked, but there was plenty of speculation. Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and Jay-Z were all rumored to be among possible performers. [AM NY]

haha, the Red Sox are still using theirs. October vacancy rates at the Yankees' home field are becoming the norm.

I love how the Yankees make it seem that they have decided not to do this because they want to stay true to the baseball legacy of the stadium. If they cared even a tiny bit in reality, they never would have torn the place down in the first place. Obviously this event was cancelled for any number of other reasons... money. logistics, politics, scheduling, etc. and NOT because of any sort of romanticism of history on their part.

It was cancelled because they waited too late to book an act for the concert. Steinbrenner got fed up and said 'screw it.'

My thoughts exactly!

Hey, let's take the venerated House That Ruth built with 20+ w.s. titles, countless penants and decades of memories and knock that bitch down using taxpayer money while shedding crocodile tears in the process.. oh, and we can sell all the stuff contained therein, too, for a real screwing of our fans. AND, as an added bonus, we can get the media to cheerlead for us!
Not like we had any October plans anyway, right?
