Even if you don't have a badge, CMJ (Oct 21-25 in NYC) can be overwhelming... especially these days with the proliferation of day parties, unofficial showcases and afterparties. Running around like a crazy person trying to catch everyone you want to see can be fun, but sometimes it's not such a bad idea just to pick one place and stay there. With that in mind, I've picked one day party and one evening showcase for each of the five days, as well as late night parties where applicable. The guide to Saturday (10/25) is below...

DAYTIME / EVENING / LATE NIGHT: Brooklynvegan's doing it up at Knitting Factory from Noon - 10PM on Saturday with Little Boots, Marnie Stern, Women, Lightspeed Champion and many more. Admission = free. (note: Knitting Factory has three floors. The BV party is in the main room and the Old Office all day and then takes over the Tap Bar from 5:45 to 10:00. The main room ends at 6pm. The Old Office ends 8:00, but other shows continue in every room all night. The party in the Tap Bar from 1-5pm is also free and has an open bar. The main bar of Knitting Factory, the Old Office will have $2.00 PBR from noon-3pm). Grab some MP3's from most of the artists above.

Alternatively or later, Crashinin' In has put together a pretty killer unofficial party at Public Assemby that goes from 3PM to 4AM, including Leeds, UK's great Sky Larkin, thier pals and fellow Brits Johnny Foreigner, The Muslims, , New Zealand's Cut Off Your Hands, Drink Up Buttercup, Radio 4 and a bunch more. It's not free, but it's certainly worth the $10 admission.

The Mae Shi are playing BV and Crashinin'.

Also note: Due to weather, the After the Jump day party has moved from The Yard to Market Hotel. Admission = $10. Todd P takes over the venue later in the night.

Also tonight
* Merge Records @ Mercury Lounge
* Ponytail @ the Bell House @ Midnight
* iHeartComix @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
* 2 Live Crew @ Santos Party House at 2 AM? (make sure it isn't cancelled)
* Marnie Stern, Vivian Girls, APTBS, Crystal Antlers & All the Saints @ BB

PONYTAIL!!!!

I wonder when indie rock will swing away from being cute and childlike. Or is that what defines the term?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 11:09 AM

whaat happens when and or if it rains?!!!!!>?!!!

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 11:10 AM

the After The Jump festival is NOT happening at Market Hotel today.

There was very brief discussion of it as a possibility, but nothing was even close to confirmed and it is definitely not happening.

Apologies for the confusion, but I'm kind of perplexed by how this rumor even got started.

Posted by Todd P | October 25, 2008 11:17 AM

UPDATE: After The Jump -may- be moving to Death By Audio.

It's a bummer, and Market Hotel would love to accommodate them last minute, but there is unfortunately no way that space can do a daytime show today because of some unfortunate unusual circumstances.

It's all cool. We've just called it a day and are going to stay home in our pjs, watch Little Britain and stay out of the rain. Thanks Todd for your help, for real, amazing.

The Ghostly International showcase looks great for a late night pick - Matthew Dear, School of Seven Bells, Deastro and Michna. Cool show from a great label!

Posted by Roland | October 25, 2008 11:58 AM

little britain usa blows. leave it to the US to ruin a good show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:14 PM

the nighttime Market Hotel show with DMBQ / Mae Shi, etc is still happening, fyi!

it's only the never-confirmed day show that isn't happening.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:23 PM

todd p can suck it, i was really looking forward to that day bill!!!

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:33 PM

todd p had nothing to do with it.

the organizers were deluded, it's impossible for the show to happen at Market Hotel.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:39 PM

how do you know?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:44 PM

if you ant the whole story read this post and the comments below it:

http://poptartssucktoasted.blogspot.com/2008/10/after-jump-show-canceled.html

the above link pretty much explains it all, it's got Todd P and the organizers both talking and agreeing

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 12:49 PM

hey Todd P tried to help out this show but couldn't, give him a break!

why don't you offer to host the show in your apartment if you think it's something that should happen so much?

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 1:04 PM

Todd P is live at Fontanas tonite

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 1:28 PM

ATJ needed an indoor venue at the last moment because of the weather and Todd was asked try to work something out. It wasn't his show, it wasn't his problem and his plate is full with about 50 things today -- including his own outdoor show that had to be moved inside -- and he still tried to help. The Market was suggested as a possible idea, but it couldn't be done. No one is the bad guy here, it just didn't work out. Its a shame that this excellent show got canceled, but it was the rain that overcame the good intentions of all the people involved.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 4:27 PM

What a shame, it looks like the ATJ Fest could have happened. Weathermen eat shit!

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 4:34 PM

Black Lips went on stage around 12:30am, I think.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 5:58 PM

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 8:05 PM

Ths Killers' gig yesterday was amazing, this blog is retarded for not even mentioning it. Such music snobs.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 10:28 PM

killers are for the uncool, you should know by now. start your own mainstream music blog then. but we know the mainstream don't read

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 10:42 PM

The Killers are the '00s equivalent of Toto.

Posted by Anonymous | October 25, 2008 11:11 PM

That's an insult to Toto.

"Who is stupid enough to schedule an outdoor show on Oct 25? Retards."

Like it never rains during the warmer months. Also, the average temperature during the day on Oct. 25 isn't THAT cold, you wuss.

Posted by Sam Champion (the weatherman, not the band) | October 25, 2008 11:36 PM

what time does Todd P go on?

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 12:20 AM

Maybe 100 for Ponytail tonight and people were nuts! Pretty great.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 2:08 AM

Killers can slurp my sack.

Stop hating on Todd P. Motherfucker works hard and puts on good shows. Black Dice/etc was possibly the best show I saw all week. I caught portions of 3 of his day shows and they rocked as well. More of you assholes should have gone. Fuck.

BV deserves props for 3 great shows. Great selection. Today was particularly awesome.

Posted by feedbacker | October 26, 2008 2:10 AM

Killer's can fuck off. nice to see Kate Jackson slag them off on Never Mind the Buzzcocks last week.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 3:03 AM

fuck cmj

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 8:28 AM

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 8:35 AM

Tapping with 2 fingers (one per hand) isn't really "shredding".

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 11:57 AM

well thank goodness thats over.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 12:10 PM

cmj = a waste of everyone's time

next year, just skip it

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 12:23 PM

A has been that never was

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 12:49 PM

Whatevr hatrs. CMJ = lots of free shit. Only complete assholes would hate that.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 1:22 PM

"Stop hating on Todd P. Motherfucker works hard and puts on good shows..."

agree with feedbacker. stop the todd p hate. he does work hard and seems to be a nice guy. how many people organize fun shows in cool spaces (especially during cmj) & sometimes they're free!

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 1:31 PM

i had a great time at CMJ

Posted by gregory | October 26, 2008 1:46 PM

just a quick comment...ive been going to cmj shows since around 1995-96 or so...it used to be huge...it used to be tons of great bands...big and small getting exposure and playing.

this year, i went to 1-2 shows...none of which were cmj directly...

the positives: there were tons of free shows you can just walk into. the brooklyn vegan show on sat at knitting had a great lineup and was totally chill to just walk in and out of.

the negatives: most bands plain suck these days. no established bands need cmj anymore and wont play for free or cheap. what you get are just a million shit bands trying to be the next flavor of the day.

also, the old music industry is just sad now. they fill these tiny venues for showcases like at 205 club. they all have no idea how insignificant their work has become.

congrats go out to brooklyn vegan and stereogum and the places throwing parties all week with free shows and no bullshit. they are the only ones making this week fun.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 3:00 PM

"what you get are just a million shit bands trying to be the next flavor of the day."

this is hardly a new aspect of cmj... lets be fair.. one or two of those bands are worth catching.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 3:23 PM

weren't most of these bands that played
BV and stereogum here for some "official"
cmj showcase sponsored by a record label????
"it used to be tons of great bands...big and small getting exposure"
great bands.... defined by... who,... you????
i saw quite a few really good bands,
great? i dunno but they are like 19 yrs old give them a break
did you go and see any bands that you never heard of???
or read about on a blog like BV??????
maybe you should have instead of complaining
how 1100 bands aint enough for you.
and if $10 is too much for you to pay to see 6 or 8 bands
then you certainly don't belong in NYC
MOVE

Posted by gregory | October 26, 2008 3:39 PM

the merge showcase at the mercury lounge last night was fantastic.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 4:48 PM

cmj would make sense if ny didn't have 30+ shows every night anyway
but it already does
and cmj week is the only time that ppl are shut out of most shows
cinncinati and detroit need music festivals

todd p's the man

the killers are the men

Posted by rrrrrrrrrrrrrr | October 26, 2008 6:41 PM

CMJ sucks, plain and simple. every year it gets worse.

No one comes to New York for CMJ unless they're on an expense account or in a band that's playing.

CMJ is nobody's indie rock tourism destination.

The festival pretty much only keeps existing because the organization makes a lot of money off the the fees they collect from the bands that apply to play.

Posted by Anonymous | October 26, 2008 9:23 PM

disagree with 9:23, all the free shows made this probably one of the best cmj years ever. needless to say most people dont get badges because the price is way out of line and the badge doesnt guarantee entry. but if yu wanted to go to shows all day and night last week was the week to be here.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 7:59 AM
