Blonde Redhead are playing a show at Terminal 5 in NYC on New Years Eve. Opener TBD. $35 tickets go on sale Friday at noon.
Also that night: Crystal Castles are playing Music Hall, APTBS are playing Mercury Lounge, and Patti Smith is at Bowery Ballroom. My Morning Jacket plays the Garden. Yo La Tengo, The Feelies & Vivian Girls hold it down at the Wellmont in Jersey.

if there's any way to prove that you waited five hours in pouring rain to see this band at pier 54, only to have the band wind up not playing, will they admit you for free to this?

I love Blonde Redhead, but ^^^ agreed. New years eve is boozy sing-along time or boozy dance time. not really time to brave streets full of midtown knuckleheads to get to terminal 5.
