Iron & Wine & Blitzen Trapper @ Terminal 5, NYC - pics

words & photos by Kyle Dean Reinford

Iron & Wine

When Iron & Wine announced a NYC tour stop at Terminal 5, I was up in arms (I wasn't the only one). Just a year after playing the acoustically gorgeous Town Hall, their decision to play at T5 seemed pretty foolish. But Sam Beam has a certain way of wooing crowds, and he made Monday night (11/17) just as memorable as any show I've seen there. The sold-out crowd was completely silent as he worked (first acoustically, then with a band) through his repertoire, including a few new tracks and a 10 minute jam on "Woman King". As unfortunate as the venue was, Mr. Beam made the most out of the show. (but if you're reading this Sam, please play Town Hall again next time.)

Their Sub Pop labelmates Blitzen Trapper opened the evening. They were a more upbeat than I expected, but added a nice balance to the mellowness later on. More pictures below...

Why does every review have to begin with some moron bitching about the venue choice?

Listen, get over it, they probably had to accommodate more people (as evidenced by the fact the show sold out). That being said, it was boring as fuck. He totally took out and grooves some of the newer songs had by slowing them down. I almost fell asleep standing up.

These are the most banal and boring reviews I have ever read. BV, if you are going to have people shows for you, get some real writers. This is really just drivel.

anon 7:59, learn to proofread, douche.

i'm guessing the BV wage scale for writers/photographers doesn't command much attention in the teeming market.

BV has never really been about the review or writing imo. Also my guess is most to all of these photographers/writers work for concert tickets and press passes.

I'm glad that BV includes write-ups in his posts now. Is it Lester Bangs quality stuff? Christgau? No. Who Fucking cares? It's mostly solid, to-the-point writing and these guys/girls will only get better the more they recap events. Plus the music writing helps BV posts rank on search engines, which means more views, which means more clicks and money for our favorite music blog.

So stop being fucking children and support the site you know you refresh 15 times a day.

I saw a grown man cry that night...

The writing on BV has always been on a 3rd grade level, but there aren't that many music blogs out there...we should be thankful with what we can get!

Hopefully they won't make the mistake of playing T5 again the next time they come to NYC. That place is rotten.

It would be sweet to see him at the Beacon or United Palace Theater. That would be more ideal. Plus, the last few times he has been in NYC, he has had a huge backing back. It would actually be kind of cool to see him by himself (or with just his sister) like he did back in the days. That would be awesome.

Does anyone have a setlist from Monday's show?

Lighten up people. The photographer wrote a quick blurb about the show. He isn't a critic, he is a photographer, and a very good one at that.

^^
Agreed. Even places like the Nokia or Webster Hall would be better than T5. I can't stand that fucking place, and it really doesn't accomodate that many more people to rationalize booking there.

Anyone know the name of the encore he played. That brought me to tears, I tell you.

Posted by Anonymous | November 19, 2008 10:27 AM

The encore was "The Trapeze Swinger", which was on the soundtrack to the movie "In Good Company".

Sam releases some great records. Shepherd's Dog was fantastic. But boy is he boring live, especially in big venues like T5 or Webster Hall. I was actually as a show where HE asked the crowd to sit down. Snooooooze...

blitzen trapper & iron and wine had the best sound i've heard yet at terminal 5. all the rock shows i've seen there have sounded like shit, but the room sounds nice for the more folky acts sound rather nice there.

however, i will pass on any future iron and wine shows at T5. just because you can book everything there doesn't mean that you should.

Blitzen Trapper was fantastic and the sound was fantastic for their set.

Sam Beam acoustic was brilliant and beautiful. I left early though towards the end of the full band set. The songs were just kind of boring and I felt like they were abusing the crowd's patience with their extra long- go no where jams. I love the most recent album, but the tempos of the full band songs were just too slow and lacked dynamics-- I would have preferred the whole thing acoustic.

"It's 'Iron and Wine,' not "Iron Man and Wine," says Iron and Wine frontman, Iron and Wine
