Juan Montoya 'no longer playing with' Torche (now a trio)
by Black Bubblegum
Ex-Torche-er Juan Montoya @ Webster Hall (more by Jason Bergman)

According to Lambgoat, and seemingly validated by the band's MySpace page (peep the "band members" section), guitarist Juan Montoya is no longer with Torche. Information is limited, but according to one message board poster, the band said,
We havent made a real announcement about it yet but we will. Juan is no longer playing with us due to lots of personal reasons. We'll be a three piece for a while. Did it two nights in a row and we think it was excellent. Sorry if anyone's bummed out. We're not.According to a poster on Lambgoat who was at the show on November 24th in Gainseville, FL, "Torche played as a 3-piece (they're typically a 4 piece, right?) and the singer/guitarist had a fresh black eye." This news comes as Torche's 2008 album Meanderthal continues to be lauded by critics. Decibel Magazine named it album of the year. Pitchfork's Show No Mercy listed it at #2.Thanks!
Juan Montoya, while he was in Torche, recently interviewed Harvey Milk's Steven Tanner for Revolver. You can read that HERE. All tour dates, and videos of Torche playing as a trio in Orlando on November 25th, below...

As a fan of this band since they were Floor ... this sucks and I have no clue HOW they are going to be as great anymore. I guess they're done now.

maybe they can replace him

Major letdown. From his artwork to his playing to his mini-hulk stage-stance, he will be missed and will not be easy to replace.

I'm pretty sure Steve Rick and Jon will come up with someone to fill the void. Even though juan will be missed it isnt the end of Torche. The music could be even better than it is already.

Saw these guys as a three piece recently and it was my favorite time seeing them.

saw them play in Delaware and it ended with him and the drummer almost kicking each others asses

what happened to his F1 career? I hear he's in nascar now.

Juan was GOD. this sucks..and I love how the only clips on youtube of them as trio are them playing FLOOR songs, which were written with one guitar part to begin with. I'd love to hear them try to pull off 'Mentor' or 'Healer' with one guitar. good luck dudes..hope this is the right decision.

saw them last night with isis as a trio and they were incredible one of the biggest sounds ive ever heard from a three piece.

What??? Torche without Montoya??? I can't even imagine it, really. Steve may be the singer, but Juan was the character!

loud does not equal big... they definitely lack live as a 3 piece.
Posted by STrike | December 8, 2008 1:16 PM
whatever, juan is replaceable. and anyway, they sounded really great as a 3 peice! really!
Posted by juju | December 18, 2008 9:34 PM
any one that knows anything about their sound knows that juan is the harmony.with out him it sound like a weak backup band.juan is not replaceable.

Floor is great. Torche was better. No Montoya no Torche. Just more Floor. Not necessarily a bad thing, but Juan made Torche. I'm fucking bummed. Who are they going to replace him with?

I'm not even a huge Torche fan. They rock, however. I saw them open for Jesu on one occasion and open for Mogwai on another. In both instances, they blew my mind. Juan was a big part of their stage presence. You need at least one guy long-ass hair who can pass for Lemmy's love-child. Unfortunately, their live presence doesn't translate well into their studio recordings (hence my not being a huge fan--but a lukewarm fan nonetheless).

I'm glad we had this talk.

I don’t know the real reason behind his not being now with the band but is SUCKS big time; not being able to see him do what NOBODY can do better; play like a god. From his presence, and charisma, he will be sorely missed and it is a shame that this band got so dismembered. Whose fault it’s? Nobody knows but there is NOTHING that truly justifies this happening. Torche WAS great; now will be just average. Sorry guys...

Any questions on how torche will handle "Healer" without Juan? Checkout Scion fest video on you tube. Now you can hear those lead parts. Case closed.
