Leftover Crack

Every other band at Fun Fun Fun Fest over the weekend made it a point to give the fest's co-headliner Bad Brains a shout-out - a respect kind of thing. It makes sense. That's kind of what you do when you're sharing a bill with a band that helped paved the way for your own sound. That said, it was also really refreshing to hear one band take a slightly different approach. Leftover Crack's Stza also gave Bad Brains, or more specifically HR, lots of shout-outs. They were even positive shout-outs, but they were to call out HR's questionable politics/alleged-still homophobia. They were positive because they started with a speech about equality for all people, and were said in a way as to educate HR (if he was listening), AND Stza even announced his cell phone number in case HR wanted to give him a call. You can hear that last part in the first video below.

So, as pointed out, NYC's anarchist ska punk band Leftover Crack (who I had no idea were so popular because I honestly don't follow punk music that much) love everyone, EXCEPT, notoriously,...

...Oddly, the visit from detectives came just after cops arrested Leftover Crack lead singer Scott Sturgeon [also known as Stza Crack] on Friday for--no kidding--throwing donuts at the police during a demonstration outside the 9th Precinct in the East Village. Sturgeon says he was pissed off that the cops wouldn't let the band play their music at a reasonable volume.

In the complaint, Officer Richard Labore wrote that Sturgeon's antic "caused people to express alarm." Labore also wrote that Sturgeon was chanting "kill the police, kill the police."... [Village Voice, September 2008]

...police. The other video below is the band performing their hit "Fuck the Police" at the Austin festival. The show was a ton of fun. There's more pictures down there too...

a message for HR from Bad Brains

What made them banned from all the clubs in NYC?

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2008 2:11 PM

"What made them banned from all the clubs in NYC?"

no one wants their show busted up by the cops. that's part of it at least.

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2008 2:13 PM

they got banned for being 35 years too late.

"What made them banned from all the clubs in NYC?"

Cause not only do the play 'skapunk' and sound like garbage, but they probably bring kids who are not only ugly and smell like piss...wait, did I mention their music sucks. Oh yeah...I did.

"Cause not only do the play 'skapunk' and sound like garbage, but they probably bring kids who are not only ugly and smell like piss...wait, did I mention their music sucks. Oh yeah...I did."

Their music may not fit in your definition of cool, but at least these guys are out there spreading a message and saying something real. What has Sufjan Stevens done for the world lately?

Posted by Anonymous | November 12, 2008 4:14 PM

Their message is moronic though. Better to have no message than to scream lies and dangerous rhetoric to a bunch of drunk/stoned/worse 15-year-olds.

Speaking of donut antics...
I heard a story at my university (which I attended in the '90s and won't name because I'm embarrassed by it) about a frat and a sorority that were feuding. The frat apologized or something to the sorority and sent them donuts as a goodwill gesture. A couple of days later, they sent the sorority photos of said donuts mounted on their erect cocks.

who cares what leftover crack dude thinks about anything?

that being true, he should be allowed to say anything he wants, wherever and whenever he wants. this is America.

the NYPD really do intimidate club owners into not doing Leftover Crack shows.

if you book a Leftover Crack show you will be visited by plainclothes detectives asking to see your permits.

as ridiculous and hard to believe as that sounds, it is true. no club owner or promoter will come out and say this publicly because they fear being harassed and shut down on technicalities.

It is crazy because the NYPD's vendetta against the band is totally personal and not based on any history of riots or anything else at Leftover Crack shows. It seems that a small cadre within the NYPD is exacting revenge for personal slurs and embarrassments that Sturgeon has directed at certain members of the force, as well as because of his general incendiary comments about cops and 9/11.

I shit you not.

That is absolutely true about NYPD trying to censor and suppress Leftover Crack. Typical under Bloomie's attempt to erase any culture not mediated by transnational corporations

NYPD shut down Northsix in 2003 because they booked LC

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2008 11:44 AM

it's becasue they're from C-Squat! and the illuminati!

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2008 11:52 AM

FDNY tried to shut down Neil Young at united palace last year, remember that? not a coincidence.

Posted by Anonymous | November 13, 2008 12:20 PM

let us make no mistake, Leftover Crack are garbage and Sturgeon is a jackass with only trash to say. But goddamn it, the NYPD should not be able to flex their authority and stifle free speech... anyone's free speech.

"didn't this band have an album called Fuck 9/11 with a picture of the falling towers on it? they can go righteously wank off."

It's called fuck world trade, it has the bush administration destroying the towers. It's no disrespect to the ones dead, it's saying that 9/11 was an inside job. quit being ignorant.

We all know that STZA "Aka" Scott is Still Selling Herion to And getting little 14 yr. old girls That he lures into C-Squat addicted to herion. That his mommie and daddy who are are major herion drug dealers on the westside fronted him the money to get C-Squat. From herion drug money thats how those l.o.c. lowlifes are getting around dupeing people.

Maybe the cops and the DEA should look into that. since Scott "aka" STZA like to thumbs his nose at the NYPD and at the Police station right across from C-Squat.

Maybe it's time that the DEA call him and his corrupt herion french connection drug traffiking family out and Raid And Shut Down C-Squat. We bet you they'll hit a Nice X-mas Jackpot.!

Leftover Crack is one of the GREATEST bands of all time. It's a band that truly loves their fans, has a good message to spread and always spreads it in a good way. The message they promote is anti-hate except for religion, government and cops which I 100% agree with. NYPD should not be allowed to shut down a band's show because they personally don't like Stza and his message of peace and love. Also only a true musician would tell his fans to download the albums, as he is not about the money, he does it for the music and the message and nothing else.

^^^ I agree. I like their message of promoting tolerance and equality. I also hate cops, religion and government. GREATEST BAND EVER!
