Wellmont Theater

An hour before show time, a battalion of security officers was directing a convoy of concertgoers in S.U.V.'s, and traffic was flowing smoothly in an area known to wear down would-be diners and moviegoers seeking a coveted parking space.

Back in September, Joseph Hartnett, chief executive of the municipality, said, "Keeping all of these people moving is going to be a challenge in an already parking-challenged town." As it turned out, concertgoers said parking was less an issue than other factors, at least on a Tuesday evening when the theater was not filled to capacity.

"There's ample parking on the street -- I had no problem at all," said Chris Kunstadter, 53, of Bloomfield. Mr. Kunstadter received e-mail notification of the postponement in time to avoid heading out on Monday, but when he made it inside on Tuesday, he had a different concern.

"They should have seating on the lower level," he said, referring to the capacious open space near the main stage, where clumps of concertgoers convened. For this concert, seats were available only on the Wellmont's upper tier. [NY Times]

The Decemberists, Wolf Parade, Brian Wilson, Al Green, Yo La Tengo, Vampire Weekend, Duran Duran, and Rufus Wainwright all have shows coming up at Wellmont Theatre.

I caught the Matisyahu show there last night. It is about 1500-2000 person venue. The place has tiered ground level, so you can get good sight lines even if the place is packed. The upstairs section has a nice seating area.

Only problem is its in Montclair and there is no weekend train to that town on the weekends.

But if you drive to Montclair, there is plenty of free parking around the area.

Concert goers are parking in the South Fullerton lot which they are NOT supposed to do & noone is doing anything about that (other then shrugging their shoulders & telling people to move then or that they can park on Valley Road). As a result people who live here are left with no place to go except to park miles away &/or walk in unsafe situations. Yes a real success for everyone but the Montclair residents who got screwed & were dumb enough to pay several hundred dollars for a parking permit, that the town right after the theatre, opened in effect invalidated by changing the permit only signs to say Free for all between 7PM & 2 AM (you know the real important time one actually NEEDS a permit @@). So the lesson today is that Montclair (& the Wellmont Theater) hates its residents.

Who is going to be financially liable when someone gets attacked walking home 1 1/2 miles late at night b/c their parking permit is worthless? Who is going to be legally liable when someone is walking 1 1/2 miles home in the dark in the winter & slips & falls on the ice rendering them out of work & disabled? These are people who did the right thing, paid the money & did the homework to ensure they lived somewhere that there would be physically feasible parking so they could go home at night. So I ask who is going to be the one that gets sued, the Wellmont &/or Montclair. Because if something happens to me you better damn believe I'm going to do something about it.
