Joy Riot

Joy Riot

Ryan got off the Bedford L stop at North 7th St. in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn last night around 1 AM. The sidewalks and streets were filled with people celebrating Obama's win. At one point the cops decided they needed to clear the street out a little, possibly so a garbage truck could get through. One reader wrote into Gothamist...

We were trying to get onto the sidewalk, as requested but hard to do when it is packed. The police pushed my boyfriend because he wasn't moving fast enough and when he spoke back to them the incident escalated.

He was basically thrown to the ground, hit with billy clubs and then arrested for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest & obstructing governmental administration. Others who got arrested were only given a summons, however a police officer hurt himself while arresting my boyfriend. That is why he is still in central booking in Brooklyn.

By 2:30, when Ryan decided to go home, a lot of people had already dispersed from the intersection, many thanks to the urging of the police in riot gear (who apparently were holding at least one mace grenade). The party kept going all night though. More pictures from the 'joy riot' below...

Privileged kids on fixies celebrating gentrification.

Vomit.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:03 PM

If I had a trust fund and could afford rent there and could grow a beard and basically live off mommy and daddy I would celebrate too. The cops should have kicked the s%$t out of all of them!

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Black people gotta lot a problems
But they dont mind throwing a brick
White people go to school
Where they teach you how to be thick

An everybodys doing
Just what theyre told to
An nobody wants
To go to jail!

All the powers in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

Everybodys doing
Just what theyre told to
Nobody wants
To go to jail!

Are you taking over
Or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?

Who are the Cops protecting?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:11 PM

Club the hipsters

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:14 PM

the cops are "protecting" the street and likely the cars in the street that would like to use said public roads to reach their destinations.

if the hippies don't move cause a disturbance by blocking traffic, forceful removal is probably justified.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:15 PM

is this the mermaid parade?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:15 PM

"hippies"? really??

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:25 PM

>White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

my thoughts exactly

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:26 PM

hey, us cops spent weeks training to crush post election riots, so goddammit we're we're gonna use our billy clubs and riot outfits and crush a riot whether you're havin' one or not!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:32 PM

$20 says in 20 years all those hipsters will be dead or voting republican.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:32 PM

People weren't just blocking traffic. They were standing on vehicles
that didn't belong to them denting in the roofs and hoods of those vehicles. It really seemed as if no one was really concerned about Obama. It seemed the crowd was enjoying a slice of anarchy...
You know anarchy.. Like drinking a 22oz of Olde English in front of a cop out on the Quad. At one point, a woman on top of a vehicle was enjoying the attention she was getting after she took off her top and exposed herself. Go Obama!! From afar the celebration congregation looked like a good thing, but when I looked closer it was sad.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 4:36 PM

yeah these folks were maybe partying a little hard, but are you fucking serious, you don't look at those photos and see a cop response that's just totally way out of any scale to what was actually going down?

they had a fucking helicopter. they had teargas ready. these cops just wanted to flex some muscle and fill their boring night with a crisis, any crisis. They're lucky they didn't incite something genuinely serious with these heavy handed tactics, the fools.

I'm looking forward to the city's coming cashflow crisis because then maybe the city'll think twice about wasting our taxpayer dollars to pay way too many cops in riot gear to swing their dicks around on for 3 hours on Bedford Avenue.

Anyone who got arrested last night is an idiot. Don't you know you don't backmouth cops and expect them to reason with you?!?! Anyone who says the cops were too aggressive clearly has never dealt with cops before. Cops are a$$holes with guns, handcuffs and sticks and you will never win against them. You can complain and cry about how unfair they were to you, but at the end of the day your sorry a$$ will be sitting in a jail cell all brusied up and you'll be calling your friends to bail you out. We had 3x as many people partying on 125th St in Harlem and not a single person got arrested. There are some things you just don't do during a joyus celebration.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:02 PM

you guys are all retarded.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:02 PM

It's not so much that the arrests themselves were ridiculous, its that the cops actually provoked the crowd to cause people to get upset. The amount of shoving and horse-collaring going on by the cops towards the non-violent crowd was disproportionate and got people riled up in a non-positive way. The folks who talked back yes and pushed back, Yes they are stupid.

In fact, when the riot cops first showed up, the crowd actually APPLAUDED THEM, and chanted NYPD NYPD! (non ironically)

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/electionriot/williamsburg/50.jpg
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/electionriot/williamsburg/51.jpg

Their riot-ready presence created a situation that did not need to happen. Before that, the cops were actually quite pleasant and level headed about the whole thing.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:30 PM

Have you ever seen cops arrest someone who is running away from them? I've seen the process three times - two cops catch up to the person, each one grabs an arm, one cop on each side. Cops use one hand each to twist the person's arm behind their back and their other hands go on the back of the person's head. Next, they kind of pick the person up and throw all of their body weight forward on the person's head, driving them face first down into the concrete.

Then cuff & haul the bloody person to the patrol car.

Posted by Lori | November 5, 2008 5:32 PM

I'm glad her stupid fucking hipster boyfriend got arrested. Usually it's assholes that look for a fight with a cop who get arrested. As if any of these hipsters accomplished anything by this. Assholes deserve jail.

Posted by The Truth | November 5, 2008 5:36 PM

The cops said go home and clear the streets AT AROUND 3AM. Ya'll had a grand ol' time for 4 hours, drank, danced played music, fucked up cars that don't belong to you. All you had to do was clear out and take it home and fuck, do drugs, annoy your neighbors, sleep, think about what you have to do for work tomorrow... But nah... OBAMA!!! Right? USA USA USA!!! Right?

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:38 PM

That bearded guy wasn't arrested for protesting! He was arrested for being too portly to fit in size 28 skinny jeans, thereby violating the 2002 Edict of Williamsburg...

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:41 PM

WHERE IS OBAMA AT? HURRY UP!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:50 PM

Since the comparison was made to the celebrations in Harlem.... The reason there were no arrests and there was no show of police force in other places like say, Harlem and there were arrests on the corner of Bedford in Williamsburg, is that the cops know very well that they can get away with this shit with a bunch of lame midwestern skinny hipster kids parting on a corner in the middle of hipsterville in the middle of the night like a frat party where no one is looking or watching.

They would not be able to pull this sort of thing off in a place like Harlem where the revelers are mostly NYC natives and any show of police force would be seen as politically and racially motivated and more likely than not would actually turn into a real full scale police riot. Therefore the 'Man'' shys away from this sort of confrontation. The hipsters get hauled off and wacked because they are just acting immature and foolish and the Man knows they cannot and will not fight back because they are too skinny and too midwestern.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:54 PM

I don't know what's worse, the aggressive behavior of the police in riot gear, or the embarrassing behavior of the hipsters in their beards and hipster dress

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:58 PM

Real New Yorkers don't get arrested celebrating a election victory.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 5:59 PM

That is a complete display of people being complete Assholes. And I am not talking about the police. I have no idea why I write this but that is the worst thing we (yes we, the voters of the new President) could have done. It makes us look like fucking morons. Be happy, celebrate but do not find an excuse to fucking trash the streets, fight authority, drink too much beer. Use common sense and prove we are the people of the future, here to make a difference for the better, not fucking act like its Mardi Gras. It looks like a bunch of former fratboys and jocks getting drunk and just finding a reason to act a fool.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 6:01 PM

Williamsburg....what a joke.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 6:03 PM

In 20 years people will look back and admire the work Bush did. He accomplished a great good in Iraq establishing a democracy there (9/11 links aside). The economy coming apart was a mix of both Democrats and Republicans which began under Clinton's watch in 1999. "A mortgage for every family." Didn't work so well Bill.................................................................................

so much nicer than, oh say, having to take a look at yourself and your own participatation in the violent and hateful mindsets that are actually the root problem of what's tearing our world apart.

down here in clinton hill/ft greene, we had a celebration in the streets! the cops came, cleared the roads and hugged the crowds, and went to bedford ave to do a little clubbing....

Posted by math teacher | November 5, 2008 6:48 PM

Too Williamsburg hipsters, liking Obama is like liking TV on the Radio. They think it gives them even more hipster cred to like someone black.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 6:49 PM

Ah... Let us cherish this victory of right-minded men and women over the close-minded, arrogant, lily-white, uninformed, simplistic, and divisive dullards. GO COPS!

PS: Essentially, everybody else IN THE ENTIRE WORLD partied while being mindful of the peace, the unity, and the tremendous growth Obama's election has made possible. This display was truly shameful, selfish and sad. Williamsburg, you are New York's "Red State."

Posted by BetterDeadThanBed(ford) | November 5, 2008 6:49 PM

As I read these comments I am filled with joy that there are still some intelligent people left out there. The same joy I felt as I celebrated Obamas election last night, in my apt. I have lived in Williamsburg for 10 years and seldom leave my apt. anymore. I will soon be pushed out myself. But thats the way it works, and I have had a good time. Its over now. Those kids dont get it and never will. There are plenty of things to take the streets and cause a disturbance about. This is not one of them. Its sad that people reduced things to football hooliganism.

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 6:53 PM

The police like the rich white kids, they post bail & pay fines. Keeps that money coming in, plus it balances out the atrocities that they commit upon the lower class and minorities. Don't forget Sean Bell, you could be next! Lets hope that with Obama as president, the system will change for the better.

pretty dang funny. it would have been cool to see more privileged kids arrested. fake hippies at most.

Posted by nader voter | November 5, 2008 7:32 PM

yeah, besides the usual morons who just like saying provocative bullshit in order to rile people up (which, by the way, is childish), where do all you fools get off siding with the cops here?

the partiers may have taken it too far, but this was a totally harmless street happening that the meathead cops came in and busted up with riot gear. they're lucky they didn't get someone killed with their thug tactics.

It didn't call for anything close to the police response it got. It was like 150 cops in full riot gear, tear gas ready to go, people being clubbed, a helicopter. all for a couple hundred college educated white hipsters who were just drunkenly partying and all in a really good mood?

You won't be cheering on the riot cops when it happens to you, jackass!

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 7:32 PM

blah blah blah, privliged white kids. i can't blame anybody--black, white, purple--for celebrating the slightest sliver of hope that obama's win represents given what we've all endured the past eight years. might as well have one last all feel-good party before the depression hits sometime next year around fall

Posted by Anonymous | November 5, 2008 7:51 PM

Jeez, so many raging lamos read this blog. You sound like the folks who cheered the cops for beating on demonstrators at the Democratic Convention in 1968 in Chicago. Damn hippies, Commie pinkos etc. Even if most of them were there for the party, who cares? They are at least showing a little bit of political awareness. That's a start anyway.

Photos of privileged white kids getting beat up and arrested by riot police after the US elects its first African-American president. Compare that to the firehose/police dog photos of black civil rights workers from the 60's - change has arrived indeed!

Posted by anonymous | November 5, 2008 8:16 PM

no clashes with riot police in the predominantly black, Crown Heights neighborhood that I live in - no disturbances of any kind - we all just boogied the night away...

let's stop talking about "hipsters" and "trust funds." it's tired. and honestly, let's face it. who else is reading a fucking indie rock blog?

let's inject that passion into making the next 8 years count for something.

Posted by matt | November 5, 2008 8:24 PM

cops will use excessive force. fact. is it wrong? most of the time, yeah, but they gotta do it for the 10% of the time that it is necessary. additionally, a good number of cops are in it for the bullying. that's the bad news. the good news is that these arrests easily avoidable. if you see police, move to the other side of the street. if you haven't figured that out yet, you deserve to sit in the tombs to learn the lesson. i learned it the easy way in the suburbs, where they process you relatively quickly since you don't have to see a judge before they let you go. here's another tidbit: be nice to the cops. the one time i actually got cuffed in nyc in the 4 years i've been here, i was out in an hour because i was exceedingly courteous to the arresting officers (because i was high).

THE MORE YOU KNOW!

I wish the cops had cracked open their skulls and splattered their brains down north 7th street. I wish they'd opened fire and shot out some kneecaps and some fixed gear tires. Shoulda been done long ago!

Only a hipster trustafarian from the midwest with mommy and daddy's money would be dumb enough to not cross the street and hide and genuflect in submissive reverence when a New York City cop walks by. Us real New Yorkers know that's just how it's done.

how did I miss that? I was around getting drunk. The cure to hipster hate = hipsters not looking down on people, and being cool and likable. "Hipster" means cool, people think your cool when they like you in some way - so being likable is the cure for hipster hate. This is NYC, whereever people are from can't we adjust into a community? Elitism of hipster-mind is no good. People need to be unique and not trend followers. just some thoughts.

I moved up from Virginia and now live in Williamsburg, (and also tend to wear jeans and t-shirts with random pictures on it). So, am I a hipster douche bag? My girlfriend got accepted to school here, so we decided to move. We picked out our apartment because we had never been to New York and the realtor that we randomly picked showed us this neighborhood. I make shit money, commute two hours to New Jersey to work in a warehouse every day, and my apartment is the cheapest that we were shown. I like the neighborhood. I like the tacos down the block. I like the beer specials around the corner. When did moving into an apartment that you like become contributing to the onslaught of gentrification? Furthermore, when did being the first to gentrify some other neighborhood become more acceptable? Would you rather that I move to your neighborhood? I just vomited on my make believe trust fund. Sorry this has nothing to do with the big to-do on Bedford last night. However, if you really want to bitch about despicable people come down to Richmond with me sometime and watch the Sons of the Confederacy protest and march around the Arthur Ashe statue. I'm sure half of your friends are hipsters, and I'm sure at this point that you've probably lost track of what a hipster actually is. Keep on hatin' bros! I'm moving back to a normal town.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 4:52 AM

My problem with this whole thing is the outrage around the fact the cops were so brutal to a white person. Cops hit people occasionally - it really is part of their job but Gawker was all shocked because it was about hipsters. Do you know how often people get roughed up at say the Puerto Rican day parade. Just because your lilly white asses don't see it doesn't mean it's not going down and sometimes yes it's justified against some drunk douche who's a danger to himself and others. Other times it's just the cops being pricks. In fact it happens everyday all the time all over the city - but see that's the thing - hipsters never go to say East New York or Canarsie or the South Bronx. I know some assholes won't even come to Brooklyn from the East Village. So some guy got roughed up - I'm sure his trust fund will cover his bail and his lawyers. He may even make a buck on a law suit.

I'd like to clear up a few things here:

1. yes, that dude is legally too fat for size 28's and justice was served.

2. Jersey fucking rules; Hoboken is the worst place on earth.

3. Taco Chulo is shitty and overpriced and decidedly un-Mexican

4. I would like to punch the fuck out of that dude holding up his fixie. Yea, man, right on, brother. That's some grand political statement you're making by holding your cool bike in the air. Or maybe he was just trying to prove to the others that he's not too much of a feeble pussy and actually possesses the requisite strength to lift a bicycle up and over his head...

5. NYPD mostly do a good job. There are errors in judgment, but when you provoke them, you're going to get a reaction...They are the only reason that you can live in williamsburg without getting jumped on a daily basis.

6. Grizzly Bear is boring. Sure, i can appreciate their talent but jeez is it a yawner. Good tunes for going to sleep to, I guess.

You make me sick. You vile piece of trash. The world would be better off without scum like you. Some of us that live in this neighborhood work 60/70 hours a week, wouldn't know what a trust fund was if it landed in our laps, pay our rent on time, contribute to our community, and have only ever passed through or over the midwest. Stereotyping, generalizing pieces of shit like you make this a miserable world to live in and you deserve to fucking rot in hell. Some of us moved here from other places in this country to make a more fulfilling life for ourselves and are merely just the next wave of a changing neighborhood. I guess all the Dominicans and Puerto Ricans should go back to where they came from as well since they haven't inhabited Williamsburg since the dawn of time? Fuck off and die. You are the worst and lowest form of humanity.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 9:33 AM

hey 9:21. were you there?

soooo.... has there ever in history been a situation where the the police used excessive force? seems like you think not.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 9:37 AM

the knee jerk "the cops are good guys" attitude is now far more prevalent than the knee jerk "the cops are oppressive pigs" attitude ever was.

neither attitude gets it right. fact is, the cops are sometimes justified and reasonable and are other times unjust thugs. When they fuck up and abuse their authority, they should be criticized.

The cops overplayed their hand in Williamsburg on election night, and they should be called out for it. No reasonable person would have sent in 150 soldiers in full riot gear, with clubs, and tear gas, to break up this minor league spontaneous street party.

Can anyone point to even one photo of the party people getting seriously out of hand before the cops rolled in?

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 9:47 AM

Self-hating hipsters are so much worse than self-hating Jews.

Why do bearded hipsters with trust funds always come from Ohio? It seems as if trust-fund hipsters should come from the Northeast, New England, or West Coast, where there are actually more families with money, old and new. How many millionaire families are from the Midwest?

Posted by Regular reader | November 6, 2008 9:49 AM

I don't know where you guys get off with this "Midwest" bullshit. Everybody knows the worst New York hipsters grew up here, or in the suburbs.

I let Danny Elfman explain my thoughts.....

Theres nothing wrong with capitalism
Theres nothing wrong with free enterprise
Dont try to make me feel guilty
Im so tired of hearing you cry

Theres nothing wrong with making some profit
If you ask me Ill say its just fine
Theres nothing wrong with wanting to live nice
Im so tired of hearing you whine
About the revolution
Bringin down the rich
When was the last time you dug a ditch, baby!

If it aint one thing
Then its the other
Any cause that crosses your path
Your heart bleeds for anyones brother
Ive got to tell you youre a pain in the ass

You criticize with plenty of vigor
You rationalize everything that you do
With catchy phrases and heavy quotations
And everybody is crazy but you

Youre just a middle class, socialist brat
From a suburban family and you never really had to work
And you tell me that weve got to get back
To the struggling masses (whoever they are)
You talk, talk, talk about suffering and pain
Your mouth is bigger than your entire brain
What the hell do you know about suffering and pain . . .

Rioting—the unbeatable high
Adrenalin shoots your nerves to the sky
Everyone knows this town is gonna blow
And it's all gonna blow right now….

Now you can smash all the windows that you want
All you really need are some friends and a rock
Throwing a brick never felt so damn good
Smash more glass
Scream with a laugh
And wallow with the crowds
Watch them kicking peoples' ass

But you get to the place
Where the real slavedrivers live
It's walled off by the riot squad
Aiming guns right at your head
So you turn right around
And play right into their hands
And set your own neighbourhood
Burning to the ground instead

Chorus
Riot—the unbeatable high
Riot—shoots your nerves to the sky
Riot—playing into their hands
Tomorrow you're homeless
Tonight it's a blast

Get your kicks in quick
They're callin' the national guard
Now could be your only chance
To torch a police car

Climb the roof, kick the siren in
And jump and yelp for joy
Quickly—dive back in the crowd
Slip away, now don't get caught

Let's loot the spiffy hi-fi store
Grab as much as you can hold
Pray your full arms don't fall off
Here comes the owner with a gun

Chorus

The barricades spring up from nowhere
Cops in helmets line the lines
Shotguns prod into your bellies
The trigger fingers want an excuse
Now

The raging mob has lost its nerve
There's more of us but who goes first
No one dares to cross the line
The cops know that they've won

It's all over but not quite
The pigs have just begun to fight
They club your heads, kick your teeth
Police can riot all that they please

Chorus

Tomorrow you're homeless
Tonight it's a blast

Seriously people, folks that jump on other people's cars, and party in the streets like morons, destroying things, and trashing their very streets make the rest of the liberal left look like a bunch of fools. It's just like protesting the RNC...what the fuck are we trying to change by breaking windows, and destroying things?? Just another reason for the Right Wingers to say, 'don't vote for the liberals, their going to bring out the weirdos (not that there is anything wrong with that), just be a dignified and intelligent weirdo. South Brooklyn was pretty peaceful...just a lot of cheering, honking, and folks having a good time. Stop destroying things, and forget the cops....

The anti-hipster meatheads on this site shout "hipster" at anyone and everyone they don't agree with. Anything that moves is a "hipster"! This site lacks humor, class, wit, and totally out of touch with modern hipsterism because their stereotypes are based on information in the outdated and irrelevent "Hipster Handbook".
Basically anyone who embraces a youthful and edgy urban style, who enjoys going to rock shows and divey-type bars is labeled a hipster these days. These people represent a significant fraction of the under-30 population in this city who enjoy keeping up with the latest in nightlife, music, art, and culture. Hipterism is the new mainstream, and basically anyone with a healthy and active social life is a "hipster". It's irrelevant whether hipsters truly re-invented certain elements of culture and style, or if they're just cultural consumers and social leeches like others would retort. It's simply the new reality.
Anti-hipster sentiment is really based on a resentment of people who have healthier and more fulfilling social lives. Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from "tough guy" non-intellectual homophobic macho types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, physically slimmer, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. At some point in their lives they probably got mocked and ridiculed, or even had beer poured all over their heads, by some downtown girl with a tattoo (aka "hipster") after trying to pull some lame move on them. If you think about it, in some ways the entire hipster revolution came about to mock and ridicule such people and their mentalities. It's not about meat and muscle anymore. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can. Remember...you can always rate the amount of insecurity someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters.

Posted by Trey Parasuco | November 6, 2008 10:55 AM

when exactly did windows get broken and where did anything get destroyed at the Manhattan RNC in 2004?

seems to me the cops arrested scores of people and beat people up even though the protesters more than behaved themselves that whole week.

so maybe the "protesters" aren't always being idiots and the cops aren't always "just doing their jobs."

Take fucking stand for once in your cynical safe little privileged lives!

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 10:56 AM

fools who bitch about "hipsters" just really wish they were getting laid as much as the "hipsters" are

"the partiers may have taken it too far, but this was a totally harmless street happening..."

It didn't call for anything close to the police response it got.... all for a couple hundred college educated white hipsters who were just drunkenly partying and all in a really good mood?"

Hey Moron with the above quote... There is nothing harmless about several hundred young people gathering in the middle of the night drinking and blocking traffic and damaging vehicles. Several hundred people at 2am on a corner has the potential to get out of control. There is no reason why a large gathering of people should be allowed to congregate in the middle of the street in the middle of the night unexpectedly in the dark where cars drive and people walk. If this was allowed to continue, someone would have most definately gotten hurt or injured.

Firstly, you are not allowed to drink on the street. Secondly, you are not allowed to congregate in large numbers for political purposes without a permit. Third, you are not allowed to block the flow of traffic. fourth, you are not allowed to damage or vandalize someone else's property for the sake of your own celebratory mood. i.e: You are not allowed to stand on someone's car and dent the roof, no matter how happy you are.

The fact that these people were as you state "college educated' should've meant that they should have had better judgement than to take their out of town style college frat party to the middle of a NYC street corner.

"Anti-hipster sentiment is really based on a resentment of people who have healthier and more fulfilling social lives. Remember...you can always rate the amount of insecurity someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters."

Do you even realize how arrogent and superior you sound?

Posted by ccv | November 6, 2008 11:41 AM

Fuck off not all hipsters are pricks with trust funds. some are the trend-setters, not followers. I'm sure you have all had your personal share of crazy nights. You all would be complaining if McCain were elected, and if all of the "fucking hipsters" didn't vote or weren't involved you'd be complaining about that. Grow up, and stop judging other people for doing something they enjoy. It may have gotten out of hand, but who of you can say you haven't been there yourself. I can assure you the elitist mind-set is created due to being considered ignorant for being yourself, and doing the things you enjoy which obviously is displayed above. New York is the city where you can be yourself, and do what you wish with the privilege of co-existing. If you don't like it get the fuck out.

HA HA HA NIce try. Nailed it? Nah I don;t think so. This is written by someone who clearly has anger and animosity towards what they consider the 'non hipster, masculine "normal' tough guy. Feeling a bit insecure?

Its interesting to note that this person sees the world in two halves: The intellectual hipster, and the non intellectual homophobic tough guy.

Look at life in Black and white much?

The entire hipster revolution came about not because of a reaction to homophobic macho people, but simply because 'hipsters' were just simply full of themselves and they reveled in the fact that they were losers. A loser with skinny jeans and Buddy Holly glasses and a snotty taste in music is still a loser.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 11:48 AM

11:41, identical parties were happening all over town, with identical levels of mischief and merriment. the police arbitrarily attacked this one because some drunk kid talked back to them. Is that reasonable? fuck no!

If people were standing on cars, why no just arrest those people? that seems to be the only even sort egregious thing that anyone can claim was going on.

anyway, 11:41, you sound like a real embittered crank. Why don't you go live in a nice, authoritarian state like North Korea? You'd probably like the way they get things done over there.

To Anon 6:38, re: Westchester hipsters.

Yeah, there are some losers from there. But a lot of those from Westchester, and other NY suburbs, were punk kids making stuff happen in NYC in the late '90s. Remember, this was when there was little, if any, indie scene in NYC.

Looks like the DNC. Also, Fuck the police. Also, fuck people RAGE'ing about hipsters, it's getting old, we know that everyone hates them. Also, I don't know why people are so excited, it's just another president that is a somewhat competent and reasonable man for the job. He's not god, or the anti-Christ. More and more of this is causing the religious zealots out there to think that he really is the anti-Christ.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 11:58 AM

so, let me get this straight, 11:41, so if there are laws being broken, no matter the insignificance, then any amount of overwhelming police response is justified?

could they have used tanks and chemical weapons? would that have been ok too?

I'm surprised, typically cranky conservatives like you would have a problem with obvious wastes of tax payer money, like, say, spending thousands and thousands of dollars in overtime pay on 100's of dimwits in riot gear, just to stand around for 4 hours and keep some unarmed skinny white boys from having a good time

do you honestly think the police have no foresight?
they knew where a situation like Barack's victory would potentially get out of hand...williamsburg.
they anticipated that (and you get the feeling that) the party there was more about having a party in the streets than celebrating a political achievement or defining american moment.
that's when people get hurt and property gets destroyed.

I won't waste time hating on anyone, but it's obvious that this was a likely locale for unruly behavior...hence the police response (albeit a bit on the overwhelming side)
all I saw in my little corner of brooklyn was elation!

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 12:27 PM

Great to see the comments here against the revelers.
Greenpoint and Williamsburg has become Disneyland for many new comers. I don't mind new people in our neighborhood, but don't use it as your playground for 3 years and then move on. Contribute to the neighborhood and partying on a Tuesday night in the streets and not moving when cops tell you at 2am is not the contribution we are looking for. The comments on this topic reflect the feelings of longterm residents of the neighborhood who are getting annoyed by the constant party scene leaving the neighborhood is shambles night after night. Have some respect for the people of these neighborhoods who are actually living there making it their permanent home and not a 3 year cruise.

Posted by gpointlongtimer | November 6, 2008 12:31 PM

12:27 thinks that the very fact that the police sent a billion riot squad dudes to crush north 7th and bedford, proves that... the right thing to do was to send a billion riot squad dudes to north 7th and bedford.

interesting logic.

these police were itching to use their riot gear and knew they could get away with it in Wburg. The reason nothing similar happened with the cops in Bushwick or Crown Heights or Flatbush or Bed Stuy is that the cops knew that shit would not be tolerated out there

Williamsburg rent is nothing compared to the city..what are you idiots talking about with this macho haterdom on trust fund burg residents? I dont know about the rest of you, but I work really long hard hours for my rent here, and it's tough, but still nothing compared to some of my more well off friends living in the city. I love the burg, I love all the great restaurants, the coffee shops, the shows we have here, all of it. It rocks, and that's why I live here. Stop being haters, and get over yourselves. If you are really that jealous of the residents here, get a damn job and earn your rent for an apartment here, like almost all of the people living in the neighborhood do. And wake up, there will always be spoiled idiots living in ALL parts of the city, from assholes on the upper east side (a more likely trust fund scenario in all actuality)to the villge and all over. Grow up. Even if I was flat broke and needed $ my parents couldnt afford to help me right now, nor would I want them to. Your jealous hating on our awesome neighborhood is silly. Where exactly do YOU folks live, and do YOU have jobs and contribute to your neighborhood? Hope so.

i celebrated obama's win with some friends in my apartment in a mixed, mostly south american neighborhood in elizabeth, discussing the difficulties obama will face implementing workable policies that will have an effect in time to assure a second term and continued democratic control of congress. no one was arrested, and we all went to work in the morning.

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 1:49 PM

1:49, dude THERE WAS NO RIOT!

how many times do we have to say it? there were a couple hundred people standing in the streets basically peaceably celebrating a historic moment, and certainly not doing anything rowdier than what was happening in any other neighborhood... and then the riot police rolled in.

just because there were cops in riot gear beating people up doesn't make it a riot.

"But these are completely rich privileged tools thinking the numbers of people in the street is approval to be an ass"

Someone needs to review basic English grammar. Also, please don't comment if you weren't actually on the street at Bedford and N 7th. It wasn't a riot, it was a celebration of an amazingly wonderful historical occurance. Again, jealous Jersey fools come on with the hate. McCain lost, get over it.

Posted by huh? | November 6, 2008 1:55 PM

point being, it's ok to be normal and live in new jersey and to despise the sort of people who scurry around bedford avenue like so many cockroaches in fake thrift store clothes. it does not make you homophobic, or a frat boy, or inferior to live in jersey. in fact, rents are cheaper, gas is cheaper, and you don't have to look at hipsters all day. although, i do piss cash money, that much is true.

agree with 1:54. the difference is, this celebration lasted longer than others (from news reports, most of them stopped/ were shut-down around 2am) and this annoyed the police and some neighbors.

"1:49, dude THERE WAS NO RIOT!

The best part about this whole thing is that it is incontrovertible proof that now COPS are more punk than anybody who lives in the 'burg!

Consider...throngs of DIY/hipsters/whatever are all over the streets celebrating how much they like the president! Hahaha, what?? How pathetic. Yes, we love being ruled and we really love our ruler! Yes We Do! Cops are beating them down because liking the president (any president) is clearly braindead.

This is the first time i have ever rooted for the cops. How long till we have to show up for the Obama Youth Daily calisthenics in McCarren park?

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 2:18 PM

They are rioting cuz I bet their rent money is going more to taxes with Obama's new plan i.e Republican parents who prob make over 250k a year . Time to go out and get yourselves jobs... and FYI by wearing American Apparel... sorry no company is EVER gonna hire you walking in like that for an interview lmaoooo.....

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 2:19 PM

it was undoubtedly the new Williamsburg people, the financial industry types, the condo dwellers, the people who thought highrise property in Williamsburg would be a good "investment." These are the people who goaded the cops into overreacting to this harmless street party.

anyone who was foolish enough to buy a condo at the peak of the real estate market (which describes 99% of the people who have moved into the area in the last year), those people who are freaking the fuck out right now about their property values plummeting; it only follows that those people would overreact and pull every string they could to get the cops to come in with the riot gear to break up the kids' good times.

Not all hipsters are dirty trustfund kids. Not all non-hipsters are macho assholes. Move on people!

Posted by Anonymous | November 6, 2008 2:27 PM

The midwest will stop sending you "hipsters" just as soon as the East Coast stops sending all of its pink-dress-shirt-wannabe douchebags to the midwest for cheap college tuition at our academically-superior-to-the-Ivy-League universities.

Talk about trust-fund wastes of humanity- the clean cut conformist D-Bag patrols have always been the worst offenders of any flavor here in Madison, and they contribute nothing- aside from bitching about which over-priced conspicuous consumption bullshit isn't available at the corner market, and coming up with annoying names for groups of people based on where they are from- because that's the kind of labeling people get obsessed with when they have nothing to show for themselves but the location on the map where their mom happened to shit them out.

The D-Bag patrols have always been the worst offenders in the riots in this town, especially at ruining the old Halloween party, because they could always just run inside the State St private residence halls that mommy and daddy paid for to hide from the cops or the girls they just sexually assaulted in the street.

do you know why I'm addicted to the BV comments section?

it's not healthy at all, but genuinely there are so many people in New York with terrible attitudes and ideas, not to mention bad taste! Just walking down the street, riding the subway, or going to a restaurant or a movie or a show means being among hundreds of them. They can be silently infuriating, every minute you spend outside your apartment, and you can't say anything.

BV is the one place where you can confront the morons with their terrible ideas and just vent off the frustration these cretins cause you every day of your life, with no fear of retribution and no consequences.

On the flipside, it basically invites them all into the confines of your room to infuriate you and grind away at your soul, all the time.

so it's a mixed bag!

I have no idea what happened in Williamsburg on Election Night since I wasn't there but it does appear the police may have overreacted. At the same time, there is no excuse for jumping on other people's cars and blocking streets. This was clearly a joyous occasion so it is understandable that people wanted to revel but even revelry must be done lawfully or at least in a way that is respectful of other's property.

That being said, this was clearly not a riot. Just wealthy people partying in the street.

Frankly, it is too bad these same people and millions of others weren't rioting nonstop for the past eight years which are thankfully over.

fact: NYPD arrested 6 people on Bedford Ave

fact: These were literally the ONLY celebration-crowd arrests in New York City

So: was Williamsburg the most loud, unruly and dangerous celebration-crowd in the city? Or was it just the one where the cops knew PEOPLE DON’T CARRY GUNS?

I would wager the latter. This was the 2008 equivalent of "this is Guiliani time not Dinkins time."

who living in NY would want to live in williamsburg. it's so fucking white and obnoxious. ny is about diversity and culture. fuck williamsburg. that place disgusts me.

Posted by Anonymous | November 7, 2008 2:01 AM

I love when people say "white" to mean "not black," because they are only cognizant of two races, so they count Asians, Indians, Latinos etc as "white." This is foolish. At any given moment you walk down Bedford you'll see different races and cultures, hear different languages.

the cops had awesome 70s gay mustaches though. Go West!

"Jeez, so many raging lamos read this blog. You sound like the folks who cheered the cops for beating on demonstrators at the Democratic Convention in 1968 in Chicago. Damn hippies, Commie pinkos etc. Even if most of them were there for the party, who cares? They are at least showing a little bit of political awareness. That's a start anyway."

Exactly. This is a walk in the park for 'riot police'. An easy gig and a rare chance to show some authority. What a fucking joke. NYPD cops on a power trip, shoving around peaceful, fun loving people. Who cares where the fuck they're from? Ohio, Indiana, Florida, Long Island etc. How about USA?

Shame on you people for not being able to see how fucked up this whole thing is.

Posted by Jack Spratt | November 7, 2008 3:54 AM

Its all pretty simple. A retard could understand it. The streets are for cars. Sidewalks and crosswalks are for people. You walk down street and block traffic, you deserve to get a beating. I don't understand how people think that laws don't apply anymore whenever some major event occurs.

It's no longer peaceful when a mob of drunk assholes take over streets.

Yes, south park did a great job with this.

everyone knows that before these so-called
"rich, white midwesterners" arrived in williamsburg
it was a depressed blighted fucking HELLHOLE.
i was born in Brooklyn in 1959
and i lived in williamsburg in the early 80's.
there was NOTHING there. no restaurants, stores or bars
there was only that joe's busy corner place on N7th
and the kellog diner. the only thing you could buy there was HEROIN. in which they did a brisk business.AND the Cops made money from that. i used to watch them protect their business on my block everyday.and they would stop me everyday,EVERYDAY.
only because i was an outsider, which they feared.
If you want to blame someone for "Gentrification",
by which you mean rising rents, Blame the GREEDY LANDLORDS.
not the people who have moved here and made it a viable
neighborhood to live in again.

"Holiday In Cambodia"

So you been to school
For a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car
Thinkin' you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl

Play ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five grand stereo
Braggin' that you know
How the niggers feel cold
And the slums got so much soul

It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear:

It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife

You're a star-belly sneech
You suck like a leach
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch
So you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you

Well you'll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake

Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son:.

It's a holiday in Cambodia
Where people dress in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss ass or crack

Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, [etc]

And it's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
A holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul

south park has never done a good job of explaining anything.

their politics (touchy feely libertarianism), and their hamfisted ways of shoehorning it in to the episodes are the weakest part of the show

since everybody's posting lyrics...

I went to a party at the local county jail
All the cons were dancing and the band began to wail
But the guys were indiscreet
They were brawling in the street
At the local dance at the local county jail

Well the band were playing
And the booze began to flow
But the sound came over on the police car radio
Down at Precinct 49
Having a tear-gas of a time
Sergeant Baker got a call from the governor of the county jail

Load up, load up, load up with rubber bullets
Load up, load up, load up with rubber bullets

I love to hear those convicts squeal
It's a shame these slugs ain't real
But we can't have dancin' at the local county jail

Sergeant Baker and his men made a bee-line for the jail
And for miles around
You could hear the sirens wail
There's a rumor goin' round death row
That a fuse is gonna blow
At the local hop at the local county jail

Whatcha gonna do about it, whatcha gonna do
Whatcha gonna do about it, whatcha gonna do

Sergeant Baker started talkin'
With a bullhorn in his hand
He was cool, he was clear
He was always in command
He said "Blood will flow;
Here Padre
Padre you talk to your boys..."
"Trust in me -
God will come to set you free"

Well we don't understand
Why you called in the National Guard
When Uncle Sam is the one
Who belongs in the exercise yard
We all got balls and brains
But some's got balls and chains
At the local dance at the local county jail

Load up, load up, load up with rubber bullets
Load up, load up, load up with rubber bullets

Is it really such a crime
For a guy to spend his time
At the local dance at the local county jail
At the local dance at the local county jail

Whatcha gonna do about it, whatcha gonna do
Whatcha gonna do about it, whatcha gonna do

This photo set is great metaphor for the Obama presidency. Act I: Kids energized, mobilized and happy, pouring into the streets to celebrate. Act II: kids inevitanbly beaten down by government. This is surely what will happen as the business of being elected turns to the business of leading.

Don't get me wrong. I supported Obama, and it is not only a great feeling to see Bush go, it is great to see such an eloquent, intelligent man step in, and a barrier-breaker to boot.

Still, Obama faces the need to close not one but two ill-defined wars and a financial collapse of historic proportions that has yet work its way into the business cycle. Realistically, what do you think will happen in two years, when more people are out of work, and foreign leaders are playing "got your nose" with a new president struggling to shore up his own image at home?

The situation is not good, thank you Bush and Cheney. And while there is no better man to lead right now, the odds of this president succeeding are slim.

The real beatdown is coming, I'm afraid. America, try to remember the joy of electing such a great, inspiring man when the tough times come, and see what happens. As I recall, Jimmy Carter was a smart, decent man, too...and when circumstances out of his control arose, they killed him for it.

Posted by Andrew | November 7, 2008 11:13 AM

wow...

here's a fact

a large portion of these comments (WITHOUT EVEN HAVING TO READ THEM) are ill informed and straight up incorrect. both in judgment, thought, prejudice, etc.
most of you are wrong. and i don't even have to read everything that you wrote. it shows in the tiny words and phrases that come up.

i was BORN and RAISED in williamsburg
(and i said before and i'll say it again)
before MANY, if not all, of you knew it even existed.
and shit has it become, not a horrible town, but a horrible thing. a thing that breeds bullshit comments and causes people to make pathetic judgement calls when they have NO idea what the hell they're talking about.
i miss the williamsburg of the old, when it was a great place to live and everyone that lived there lived there and it was quaint and nice.
and not some fucking international phenomena bullshit that you fuckers have tragically made it out to be.
that williamsburg became such a popular place is the worst thing that could have happened to the town. better it drowned in the east river then have assholes think the awful and pathetic things they think about it.
better it drowned then to have 300 bullshit posts where the majority of them are nonsense.

FUCK brooklynvegan and all the fucking teenaged minds of you so called adults.
fucking shame on you and move the fuck back to wherever the fuck you came from.
you've added fuel to a disgusting fire.

Posted by blackhat | November 7, 2008 5:23 PM

To the annonymous hipster trash douche who tried to be all clever and correct somebody else's Francais . . . .

The World Cup (le couple du monde) is masculine so the original poster was correct -- le coupe du monde. Not "la coupe du monde" as your clever ass tried to say.

You are correct that les etats unis is plural so it should be les etats unis ont not les etats unis a BUT many French people actually would use the singular when speaking so not sure all of your showing off was really worth it.

Posted by Sharkdog | November 7, 2008 5:42 PM

well, this sentence absolutely proves 3:42pm was born in brooklyn
but in what decade was this:
"williamsburg of the old, when it was a great place to live and everyone that lived there lived there and it was quaint and nice. "?
the 1880's? In the 1980's there was only heroin
and you couldn't find a cab that would take you there.

Why the hating on fixies? Good cheap transportation. A few in the photoset looked higher-end (but still nothing compared to a motor vehicle). And the bike at the arrest scene was a good ol' cheapo American Schwinn.

20 years from now you will all be republican. i mean you come into someone's neighborhood, make it "cool" and have them thrown out so you be faux poor. i saw many hipsters voted for obama because it was so fashionable and then act like a bunch of complete disrespectful assholes the night he gets elected. i would like to know how many of you effing a-holes donated or spread the knowledge of barack's platform. all you did was make fools of yourselves so that your oh so reblious fashionable photos could be posted on gothamist and last night'party. i don't understand how this was the only neighborhood that ended up having a violent occurrence on a historic and positive night. please get a life and get positive. how are we as a generation supposed to make our mark if we are too lazy too face who we really are and get our shit together.

this night had nothing to do with the election, it was just an excuse to get wasted.

Look at some party pics of one of the woman who was arrested later:

The people who were out damaging other peoples property and disrupting others who may have to work in the morning don't care about the election its just another reason to rage.

Williamsburg's bearded, sweater-wearing, thrift-store hipsters are different from the tattooed, leather jacket, Bettie Page hipsters of the East Village, and very different from the coke-snorting, asymmetrical haired, skinny pants hipsters of the Lower East Side.

But you all call them the same word: HIPSTER. Can somebody please explain why is *everyone* called a HIPSTER?

anyone else ever thought about and been been perplexed by why we're allowed to leave our cars on the public streets?

they're our property, and just like everything else that's our personal property, shouldn't we be required to bring them in at night?

personally, if I left something worth thousands of dollars outside, unattended, on the streets of New York City, I wouldn't be surprised if it got fucked up or stolen.

How's all that "hope and change" working out for you all now?

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly.

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain.
