The Muslims

WE HAVE CHANGED THE NAME OF OUR GROUP TO "THE SOFT PACK". Working on new material and firing on all four cylinders, we feel strongly about this one. It's a new chapter in our lives and hopefully yours. Stay tuned to The Soft Pack page (www.myspace.com/thesoftpack), as we will be posting new videos, music, and junk in the coming weeks. We are pumped. Have a great Thanksgiving and keep it loose. Your buddies, The Soft Pack. [The Muslims]

I just named my band The Islamofascists.

Bad move?

Posted by Anonymous | November 28, 2008 9:04 PM

The terrorists win when you rename your band to the Soft Pack.

Posted by Mark B. | November 28, 2008 9:50 PM

must be a real good band

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 12:01 AM

soft pack sounds really gross. i don't know why, it just sounds really weird and unpleasant. muslims was hard hitting put really, the soft pack? basically setting themselves up for failure with that one. i did like their debut though.

god, the soft pack. how embarrassing for everyone involved.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 3:20 AM

Never thought Muslims was a good choice. They must've gotten some flak.

Posted by Deb | November 29, 2008 7:21 AM

I would venture the Mumbai attacks had something to do with it. There had been a lull in major extremist religious violence lately, and calling themselves "The Muslims" was a way to turn people's heads without immediately offending anyone (which they shouldn't really have had to do, their music stands on its own merits).

Interestingly, Mumbai is of course the new name for Bombay and there is a band with Bombay in its name playing one of the upcoming Vampire Weekend shows at Terminal 5.

Posted by Elwood D. Pennypacker | November 29, 2008 10:04 AM

why the fuck would they call themselves the muslims in the first place? are they fucking stupid?

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 11:38 AM

ugh. as in a soft pack of cigarettes? i hate those.

HEY GUYS I'M CHANGING THE NAME OF MY BAND FROM 'THE JEWS' TO 'MENTHOL FILTER'

HAW HAW

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 12:25 PM

I remember first hearing about the Muslims and thought it was the dumbest name. Then I saw an advertisement about the band the Silver Jews and thought, how world-peace-like would it be if they performed on the same stage?

Whichever name these guys choose they are a great band and this was totally proven at CMJ.

Posted by JM | November 29, 2008 12:40 PM

whether they change their name or not - they still remain a sub-par band that are caught up in the 'retro sounding' post punk wheelhouse. they'll end up in the cut out bin in a few years. mark my words. the dangerous thing about them was their name. they caved into the pressure of their new management company and changed their name. you think the revolting cocks or young black teenagers (who were a bunch of white dudes that released records in the public enemy "fight the power'-era of rap) ever did? no. the wonderful thing about 'art' is never giving in. you create and present your 'art' on your own terms, not listening to some management company suit in order to get a record deal that wont jeapordize record sales....just a thought

HEY GUYS I'M CHANGING THE NAME OF MY BAND FROM 'THE SHIITES' TO 'CIGARETTE YOUTH'

HAW HAW

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 1:32 PM

I have heard through various sources that they are getting a huge commercial deal from a corporation who was worried about the associations their name could bring. What this means, I don't know, but either way, I have lost whatever respect I did have for them.

Posted by always right | November 29, 2008 1:55 PM

If only they'd started out with a name nobody could object to, this all could have been avoided. Something like All White Men are Evil.

HEY GUYS I'M CHANGING THE NAME OF MY BAND FROM 'BEARDED TERRORISTS' TO 'SMOOTH DEPENDABLE FLAVOR'

HAW HAW

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 3:39 PM

choosing "The Muslims" as your band name is about as stupid as you can get. Does anyone know if there is some relevant reason why they chose it? I never listened to them because of their name. I don't know if they suck or not... but I would assume that they suck because they are stupid.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 5:04 PM

soft pack = soft on

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 5:09 PM

naming yourself after a religious group or phrase is not inherently a bad idea. black sabbath anyone?

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 5:20 PM

comparing the name Black Sabbath to The Muslims is not a good point... sorry. Not to mention... times were different then.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 5:53 PM

My new band is called "THE AFRICAN AMERICANS"

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 5:54 PM

maybe they're just muslims. I am, nothing wrong with that.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 6:25 PM

^ close the thread.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 7:45 PM

can't wait til monday when all the blogs in the blogOsphere blog about The Muslims changing thier name. i mean, who cares. shitty overrated band with an even shittier new name. Soft Pack? WTF is that? they went from a hard sounding band name to a pussified name within a stoke of their overpriced Publicist's keyboard. they probably had to pay high bucks for them to hit "send".

anyone know whatever happened to John Cougar Concentration Camp? they didn't change their name, though they never sold records either.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 7:45 PM

You know what, a lot of you are right- especially Anon7:45 and Louis Farah Faucet Khan.

Posted by JM | November 29, 2008 8:00 PM

Someone informed them what the name actually meant. A check with a dictionary confirmed this. Hence, the new name, The Soft Package.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 10:19 PM

^ Soft Package is actually better than Soft Pack. As is Thee Unstoppable Soldiers of Meta Christ, but that's taken, apparently.

Posted by Anonymous | November 29, 2008 11:34 PM

since when is bombay called mumbay? talk about a dumb fucking name change.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2008 2:34 AM

Ha Ha Ha Thank you Very Mucuhh

Posted by Lida Dai Dai Hua Jiao Nang Seo Yarışması | November 30, 2008 8:10 AM

How amazingly retarded. Of all the band name to change it to - The Soft Pack?! Oh my god I'm crying and beating off at the same time.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2008 12:39 PM

@7:45pm

there's a difference between being a muslim and being a muslim extremist. something most people unfortunately don't seem to understand.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2008 1:27 PM

"there's a difference between being a muslim and being a muslim extremist."

Yeah Muslims only worship a book that says to kill infidels and stone women. Muslim extremists actually do it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2008 2:06 PM

and in this case, The Muslims shot themselves in the foot with their new band name. ouch.

Posted by Gomer Pile | November 30, 2008 3:30 PM

@2:06pm

you're an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | November 30, 2008 5:55 PM

They should've changed their name alright... to THE FUCKIN' MUSLIMS! Ba-zing! That would've been righteous!

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 2:29 AM

2:29- ABSO-Mothafuckin'-LUTELY. yOu're brilliant.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 8:49 AM

or THE MUZZLE LIMBS

that's a bit more artsy fartsy.

Posted by Bass Squat | December 1, 2008 9:25 AM

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 10:24 AM

beating off and crying at the same time is one of my daily rituals. Along with screaming racial slurs while shitting.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 11:18 AM

it's funny how when this band started getting noticed everyone was like "what a dumb fucking name" and now that they change it everyone is like "what sellouts for not having the guts to stick by their dumb name." bands can never win with the indie backlash on blogs.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 12:02 PM

12:02: i think both of those statements are legitimate, even if they come from the same person

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 12:13 PM

how about Ex-Muslims?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 12:26 PM

indie-blog backlash being what it is, and whether or not the band is any good (i've never heard them), they deserve all the criticism they get for this move. i'm not one to criticize bands for taking corporate dollars for advertising, i don't even much believe in the concept of selling out anymore; trail of dead and tv on the radio don't suck because they signed to majors, they signed to majors and began to suck for a lack of good music. however, when you give up a basic aspect of your art, be it a non-pc band name or whatever, and replace it with something innocuous, so as to enable your mass-promotion at the expense of your very craft, then you have crossed the line. soft pack? really?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 12:59 PM

Flacid

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 1:39 PM

they should change the name to "SOFT BITCHES"

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 2:44 PM

or tour the states in the Mister Softee ice cream truck....delivering smiles to thousands

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 5:06 PM

Did anybody ever consider that maybe they were tired of the name being a distraction from the music.

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 7:49 PM

Hello

They should change their name to

Beating Off Cryers

That is my feeling.

The band name the Muslims, while sounding dangerous and cool, is a good way to get your head cut off by actual Muslims while on tour in European Countries. Anyone heard of Theo Van Gogh? Wise move for the Soft Pack.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 8:42 AM

These guys are still really good.

Posted by Erik | December 2, 2008 9:52 PM

when i hear softpack i think of baby wolves, and that makes me happy like their music. who cares what their name is. they obviously had Islamic friends whom they met in NYC and got big and they decided they were offending HALF THE WORLD! hey hey guys calm down!

these guys will make good music. their name won't.

plus i want to "poop back and forth forever"

cut copy that quote and stick it in a search engine

if you really hate this band name go here lemonparty.org

IT'S A PACK OF SMOKES

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2008 5:10 AM

mumbai is the original name for the city. when the british occupied india, they changed it to bombay. india officially changed it back to mumbai in the nineties.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2008 4:53 PM

its a shithole whatever its called.

...um, yeah, you suck major balls, pussy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 3, 2008 5:23 PM

they're a fun fucking band, and you're just a bitch on the internet.

Posted by clockers | December 4, 2008 11:36 AM

Lets do a pros and cons of the name change:

The Muslims:
Pros- cool name
Cons- might get your head cut off in Holland

The Soft Pack:
Pros: wont get your head cut off in Holland
Cons: less cool name

The Soft Pack have it!

Posted by Anonymous | December 4, 2008 1:29 PM

Wow, this thread is hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | December 5, 2008 12:19 AM

This vaguely reminds me of the time I had to retire my Arab On Radar t-shirt after 9/11. Idiot kids

Posted by The Anonahmoose | December 8, 2008 2:45 AM

the good thing about this name change is that, after the initial firestorm of complaints and comments, the name will cease to be an issue. The music will be left alone. And it's good music.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 5:30 PM

Did anybody ever consider that maybe they were tired of the name being a distraction from the music.

Posted by "Lida Dai Dai Hua Jiao Nang Seo Yarışması" | February 6, 2009 4:42 AM

I think it's funny because they are now "Formerly the Muslims"
so they've been converted. STILL controversial

Posted by gregory | February 6, 2009 7:05 AM

I love them no matter what their name is. I miss that sound. 70's post punk, maybe, with a indie groove, yes please. I love the mixture. Sub-par not at all. Guess who is going on tour in Europe? If they are gone in a couple of years, at least they did it!
