Grizzly Bear @ Hammerstein Ballroom (more by Zach Dilgard)
Grizzly Bear

This is to inform you that, currently your relevant artist's web-site is acting as the global-leak-source of the track, "Brother Sport", by our aforementioned client,Animal Collective, which track is not due for release by Domino until January 2009 (please see http://www.grizzly-bear.net/media/brothersport.mp3 ). As such, both the individuals collectively trading / performing as "Grizzly Bear" and, indeed, yourself are personally liable to our said clients for all commercial and other losses arising from this blatant act of piracy.

In all of the circumstances, we must insist that you now A. removethis pirated file / track without further delay and that you also B. publish the following apology on the Home Page of the Grizzly Bear web-site :-

Animal Collective - Apology
Following contact from Web Sheriff, we can confirm that Grizzly Bear
has withdrawn its stream of unreleased material by the Domino Records artist Animal Collective :
Grizzly Bear wish to apologize to Animal Collective, Domino and Web Sheriff
for the disruption caused to their marketing and release plans by this leak.

This apology must be published for a minimum period of 7 days.

As you will appreciate, this is no laughing matter and, as such, should you refuse or otherwise fail to comply with the above request, we would ask you, in the alternative, to simply provide us with the details of the US attorneys, UK solicitors, French advocats and German advocats whom you would instruct in relation to the service of such multi-jurisdictional proceedings as shall ensue. [Grizzly Bear's blog]

If you want to get technical, Grizzly Bear did not actually "leak" this song. It was already out there. They just posted it.

Tickets are still on sale for Grizzly Bear's upcoming show at BAM.

If I didn't know better, I would think the whole Web Sherriff thing was some kind of practical joke, but their surreal messages left all around the Internet are actually real.

He may think he's a legit, but I think most people agree with you BV, he's a fucking joke.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:22 PM

Santa isn't going to give any tropicalia infused jamz to Grizzly Bear this year!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:24 PM

"personally liable to our said clients for all commercial and other losses"

Oh yeah, that song was gonna make millions!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:27 PM

i remember the time when AC used to post "pirated" youtubes of their live performances on their myspace. now they go around threatening to sue people?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:27 PM

^^^If I were AC and ANY semi popular band (whether i liked them or not) posted a track of mine with kind words I'd never use this approach. Truth is the band probably has no idea that this is even happening.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:30 PM

Just curious... who is Web Sheriff?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:34 PM

Isn't someone from Grizzly Bear in AC? Too many animals to keep track of these days. I thought this was a joke?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:46 PM

No one from Grizzly Bear or AC is in each other bands. "Web sheriff" is hilarious.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 2:49 PM

Panda Bear is in Animal Collective. Department of Eagles and Chris Bear are in Grizzly Bear.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 3:38 PM

Because of Web Sheriff, not only do I refuse to post any more Van Morrison, but I slag the old washed-up drunk at every opportunity.

Posted by dean | November 24, 2008 3:56 PM

Hey 'BV' (& Everyone),

Fyi, we only sent a 'heavy' letter / request to Grizzly Bear after they failed to respond to a more normal / standard take-down request ... .. and, whilst their plug was greatly appreciated, we were simply asking them to show respect for a fellow artist by pulling this unreleased track.

If / when official, pre-release previews (full-length) become available for fans and bloggers to host / post / share etc, we'll be the first to let you know.

All The Best,

WEB SHERIFF

Posted by WEBSHERIFF | November 24, 2008 4:31 PM

The Web Sheriff is British?

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 4:35 PM

I first read the title of this post as "Will Sheff demands that Grizzly Bear apologize to Animal Collective for 'leaking' their new song" and was curious as to why the dude from Okkervil River was taking this so personally.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 4:50 PM

domino hired web sheriff, so stop saying animal collective suck for this happening. whoever said they(AC) don't know about this being posted on grizzly bear's blog is probably right.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:13 PM

I hope labels aren't paying this guy too much. I'm sure they could use that money to market these bands and albums and get people to actually buy the music, instead of being completely turned off by it.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:14 PM

Giacobbi!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:14 PM

Agree 5:14

if anything this is negative press for Domino and AC

web sheriff is more a liability

It's much easier and nicer for an intern at a label to send a note to a website (or band saying)

Hey thanks so much for the support, can you hold off on it a little bit? Instead of the stupid song and dance of Web Sheriff

Hugest Waste of money ever

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:20 PM

yep

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:29 PM

Web Sheriff is a joke

Anyway who really knows their web history knows the only true Sheriff of the internet is or was, John Perry Barlow.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:41 PM

Message to Web Sheriff...

Why do you have to write your name every chance you get? Why should Grizzly Bear apologize to you????

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 5:59 PM

^
srsly, this web sheriff shit is so dumb

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 7:25 PM

i think animal collective might know about this
i remember reading something about them really grieving about how to make money with out record sales
all though they were saying it in general particularly for smaller bands who can't sell tickets for 30 bux and sell it out two months ahead of time

i'm mean i respect it cuz it is their music and they don't want their music to leak or for ppl to have it without buying it, that's cool and their right
but doesn't it feel a lil dated
times have changed
and the importance of physical audio has shifted to other things
maybe it's time to let go a lil and look toward other avenues

ofcourse i have no idea if they really know about it or not

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 8:26 PM

i'd understand if it was the whole album

but ONE TRACK?!?!

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 8:43 PM

remember when Panda was discussing leaking and strawberry jam...

http://stereogum.com/archives/panda-bear-on-leaking-nudity_005682.html

Posted by rachel | November 24, 2008 9:29 PM

it appears Panda barely cares when the full album leaks, can't imagine this fawning post from Grizzly Bear would upset anyone in the band....

Just stupid money spent from the label

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 9:40 PM

do they really need a web sheriff? all the dude does is type "animal collective" into google blogsearch and check pitchfork/sterogum once a day.. doesn't seem like you need to hire someone for that

In what has become an overblown and rather silly manifestation of what I thought was an innocent and encouraging endorsement of Animal Collective’s song “Brother Sport,” I find that after numerous Web Sheriff emails and blog posts about this essential non-event, I must just explain the chain of events:
The song was played on a French podcast or radio program.
Someone (not me) ripped the song.
Many blogs posted the track.
I was one of those blogs.
The weekend hit, and the Web Sheriff went on patrol.
His email to us went into our Spam folder along with Penis Enlargement emails.
His email to others that work with us were in the process of being addressed, but most likely were going to wait until Monday morning, after the weekend.
Suddenly it was Sunday and note two made its way to us, and the tone had become more harsh.
Web Sheriff believed we were ignoring him, but it was an honest misunderstanding.
The song was taken down and the apology letter was put up.
People took note and blogged about it.
I decided to take down Mr. Sheriff’s letter and do this quick-and-easy twelve-step explanation.
Again, we all value the work and effort that goes into an album. We know first-hand! It was my belief this was already “out there” and was essentially like a hype track that would just further excite Animal Collective fans (myself included), so I wrongfully figured it was fair game. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the unofficial “leak” with the official label-sanctioned “leak.” If I’ve offended anyone in the Animal Collective family with my excited post, I apologize. It was meant to generate even more excitement for what will surely be a great album, and yes the Web Sheriff is just doing his job.
I hope this makes everyone happy! If Animal Collective would like to blog a song of ours in the future, I’d be more than happy to give it to them. In fact I’d be honored.
Have a lovely Thanksgiving!
Cheers,
Ed

brother sport has been on youtube for about a year and a half now. remember when it was "will to joy"? the leak was just a hi quality studio version of a song thats pretty much, with all do respect old news. not to mention ac and grizzly bear being friends. its ridiculous how the industry makes things as simple as sharing music among friends, a complicated legal issue.

Posted by Anonymous | November 24, 2008 11:48 PM

lol @ taking the WebSheriff seriously

nobody's getting punished for leaking anything

Posted by Anonymous | November 25, 2008 10:20 PM
