What am I missing? Why isn't the fact that Terry Riley is going to be appearing in person tonight at (le) poisson rouge - before the Sia/JD DJ set - big, nay, HUGE, news? I am blown away that I will be seeing him tonight. I think it's incredibly special and rare. Anyway - I'm just confused because I'm seeing no press. It's Terry Riley people! :)

I've already reached my 2 band limit with bands that have "Deer" in their name. I have no more room for one more.

Who's Terry Riley?

Posted by Anonymous | November 8, 2008 1:39 PM

He's an American early minimalist composer born in 1935. He experimented with tape loops in the 60s. I don't know exactly what to expect from the concert tonight but he uses a lot of repetition. Very good and trippy.

Thanks for asking.

yeah. who dat?

1:20 -- most readers here simply aren't interested in music that isn't either a) rock-based or b)very contemporary. Nothing wrong with that of course -- lots of new rock is terrific, and this blog simply happens to focus on it [with occasional forays into hip hop and comedy]. I do wish there was a nyc-blog where that kind of stuff [riley, post classical, minimalist, new composers and old composers] got more coverage and discussion though.

Somehow I still thought it would be news, but you're right. Thanks for the follow up, Ness.

did anyone else go to see Sarah Silverman tonight? was she totally high or something?

what's up with ending the show at 9:30pm?

Posted by cookie party | November 9, 2008 12:13 AM

TC (1:20PM) - I could ask the same question about the fantastic Marian McPartland concert at 92nd St Y tonight. Unfortunately kids coming here hardly care about anything else than indie rock bands. BV is a great source when it comes to those, but if you're making your concert choices solely by what's posted here, you're missing out on a giant portion of what NYC music scene has to offer.
