18th Dye @ Santos Party House, NYC - pics
photos by Tim Griffin

hanging out at the hotel, after some rehearsing for unplugged-ish radio sessions coming up. we got us two 1 Watt Fender mini amps, these 10 cm thingies for that.18th Dye wrote that in their tour diary on Saturday (11/29) before they opened for Marnie Stern and Gang Gang Dance at Santos Party House. The show was also the only NYC stop on the band's reunion tour that continues around North America with Devon Williams until December 13th. More pictures from their set below...now that s what we call wall of sound. the walls of the hotel were shaking. all about walls.
getting ready now for tonites show,
excited to be sharing a stage with Marnie Stern. really gotten to like her stuff - lyrics really resonate with me right now. [18th Dye]

Note to the blogger from Punk Cast: take a shower and stop taking up so much room in the front row.

Good show by 18th Dye - nothing to compare as I had never heard the band prior.
It was my first visit to Santos. I supposed I've been spoiled by Bowery Presents-style productions (where you arrive to the venue, maybe wait a few minutes, and go in). Santos on Saturday night was more of super-disco type wait - about an hour standing on a long line, whether you had already purchased tickets or not. At a quarter past midnight, the promoters finally got their act together and began to let the large crowd in. 18th Dye had already started their set.
Santos is a nice space with good (loud) sound and nice lights and sight lines. But they do not hesitate to pack a lot of folks into a tight, hot space, and, alas, as at most rock clubs, the beer selection was overpriced and lousy.
I'll try to get back there on a less conspicuous evening.

@12:35 Apologies on the first count - I'd had a hard day working. On the second - it's awkward at Santos' as the lights shine directly down from the back of the stage making it very difficult to get good angles to shoot all the band members. Fortunately those woofers at the front are so loud that most people stand back anyway. I hope you'll find the vid worth it.
@3:30 I disagree. 18th Dye were not bad at all - did some very interesting two guitar things and had a great drummer.
@1:15 It was full but not overcrowded IMHO - but certainly Santos' seems to run akin to Jamaican time.
What I have heard is that Yalan - the forward thinking ex-kf booker responsible for the recent spate of good indie shows at Santos - has been let go. Thus we may have less occasion to worry about such things in the future. I hope not.

Yalan is no longer an in-house booker at Santos, but continues to book shows there. I don't think you'll see much difference in the number of good indie shows at all. The wait had nothing to do with promoters or door bullshit (there is almost none of that there, except for Fridays with Q-tip who runs his own door), it's just that everyone showed up at the same time.

Joly, I appreciate the fine work you do and I've spent many a lonely evenings watching videos from Market Hotel. But you have to understand that other people in the room are paying customers and are usually at concerts to live in the moment, not fight to get the best shot for blog readers. I think all blog photographers should be more courteous to concert goers but I've singled you out because your flood lights distract from the LD, your ponytail gets in my beer, and your stench drives away a good 2-person deep buffer between me and those massive subs.
most people at shows have proper etiquette. I think bloggers should do the same.

Hmm I don't think I've ever posted a single video from the Market Hotel. I understand and appreciate your comments and, believe it or not, I, and other bloggers, do our best to accommodate concert patrons - while also doing our best for those unable to attend, the bands, and posterity. Rarely is there a problem if there is fluidity in the audience. It's only when you get the 'I've paid my money and I'm going to plant myself here and defend against all comers' mentality. On the other side of the coin most photographers, including that poor fellow at the right of the stage during Gang Gang, often tolerate getting mashed by over-exuberant partiers.

Is Santos closing? Why are there no acts/shows booked for a couple of saturdays and at all after Dec. 22nd? No New Years Eve? Somebodys not talking...
