Stone Roses

Ian Brown is the only obstacle to a Stone Roses reunion, the band's former bassist Mani said this week. And if the Manchester band are ever to get back together, it will be up to fans to twist Brown's arm.

"Me, John and Reni are up for doing it and Ian just needs some working on," Gary "Mani" Mounfield told the Channelbee website. Counting Mani, guitarist John Squire and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren, that's three-quarters of the band accounted for. But frontman Ian Brown is stone-hearted, and has hardly spoken to the others since their acrimonious split in 1996.

"Next year is the 20th anniversary of the first album," Mani continued. "It's the ideal time to do it. It's something I would love to do before we are all fat and bald. Start the campaign." [Guardian]

In the meantime we've got Blur, and The Specials.

Also there's Oasis, who play Madison Square Garden in NYC TONIGHT (Dec 17).

Neil Young played the same venue last night, and the night before.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:02 AM

Pretty cool that Neil Young closed his sets with 'A Day In The life' both nights and Oasis will close with 'I Am The Walrus'. When was the last time that happened?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:03 AM

Oasis is going to tear the roof off tonight. What a night we are going to have!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:06 AM

I wish they would play something off the underrated Be Here Now. D'You Know What I Mean? or It's Getting Better (Man!!!) were meant for MSG.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:11 AM

They should just play "Definitely Maybe" and "Morning Glory" back-to-back... then I'd be happy.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:16 AM

I'd love to see The Stone Roses and Oasis on a joint tour. Holy shit that would be amazing.

blur sucks

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:38 AM

One of the most creative posts I’ve seen in awhile:) Very informative as well!

Posted by العاب | December 17, 2008 11:42 AM

A great reality show would be Liam and Noel driving around Williamsburg, beating up indie hipsters with bad haircuts and tight jeans. Ratings galore.

* Liam would need subtitles though

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:45 AM

I'll watch that. Thugs from Manchester vs. weaklings from Long Island.

Bet heavy on Oasis

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:49 AM

I remember back in 1995 that in England, blur would refuse to play a venue the same night, in the same city as Oasis because Oasis fans would kick the crap out of blur fans. Funny stuff.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:54 AM

I think even Pulp fans could beat up blur fans. Take your paint brushes and run blur fans! Run to the hills!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 11:59 AM

Ok, red flag...

Posted by Chrysalis | December 17, 2008 12:04 PM

Pulp fans will get beaten to a pulp.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:05 PM

just terrible

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:06 PM

@11:59, that's pretty good.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:06 PM

hear I am trying to twist Ian Brown's arm....I will give you free drugs (hopefully that will do it)

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:12 PM

STONE ROSES > OASIS

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:17 PM

who cares about oasis.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:18 PM

If Ian kept a lot of money in the stock market I'm sure it won't be long till he agrees.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:24 PM

Oasis soldout the Garden folks. Deal with it hipster scum. Go play the Music Hall of Billysburg.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:27 PM

ooooh yeah, you're onto something. shows that take place at MSG is so much more gratifying than one at MHOW. aren't they? enjoy your shitty seats.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:37 PM

Toad The Wet Sprocket > Oasis

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:38 PM

2nd row seats between Liam and Noel so eat a fat one loser!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:43 PM

Bing Bong Bros > Oasis

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:47 PM

Corkey Bucheck > Oasis

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:48 PM

12:38 Toad wrote some solid songs. Pale and Fear were great albums!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:50 PM

Heidi Montag > Oasis

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 12:52 PM

Who is Heidi Montag? I know who Heidi Pratt is though!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 1:07 PM

Ian Brown makes a lot more money singing these old Stone Roses songs on his solo tours than he would cutting in Reni and Mani.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 1:28 PM

sold out?

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 1:40 PM

I love how hipsters hate Oasis yet they will last and go on. Your indie low-fi crap dies out fast and you move on to the next hot thing.

i.e. the strokes

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 2:04 PM

I am really excited about the show tonight. I got my row A seats at the side of the stage and I am sure it is going to be awesome!

I love anon's 11:31am's proposed setlist but would love Acquiesce as the opening encore song, Be Here Now as the opening song of the night and The Hindu Times somewhere in there as well.

However, with so many great songs, any setlist they put together will be amazing!

Posted by loop | December 17, 2008 3:08 PM

I guess I really forget how many people adore Oasis. I get it "let's have our own Beatles, man. We will make it Oasis" Noel is DEF NOT GOD! Not at all. People just like to pretend that they are in college and drink beer and sing Wonderwall and cry into their Stella and call it a night. there you go. That's Oasis for you.

Posted by Dooder City | December 17, 2008 3:16 PM

Okay, Oasis is garbage.

But a Stone Roses reunion, at ATP NY? I'd buy my ticket, and three more, right now.

Posted by greybanks | December 17, 2008 3:17 PM

Dooder City,

It seems you are posting crap without knowing what you are talking about. Oasis are more than just Wonderwall. They have developed an amazing catalog of music and they continue to go strong but I guess some here can't comprehend the concept of bands making lots of albums (and lots of $$ with that).

As far as people pretending they are in college and drinking beer singing Wonderwall, I find that statement ironic on a site where most people pretend some of these indie bands are groundbreaking artists and being in denial about the reason those bands arent big yet.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 3:24 PM

"drink beer and sing Wonderwall and cry into their Stella and call it a night. there you go."

I'd much rather drink up, carry on, sing-a-long and fall out at a show than stand there like a fucking ingrate with no drink (because that's what the jocks did in high school oh-so long ago), my arms crossed only moving them to text my friends about how much I dislike the band now that they're popular.

eat one.

Posted by Sherm | December 17, 2008 3:33 PM

Oasis' best days are behind them. They were pretty awesome back in the day. But Coldplay's taken the mantle of England's best band now. They're this generation's Beatles.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 3:35 PM

Here is an Oasis lyric.

"Yeah.. oh Yeah maybe
i'll have your baby
hand in hand
we'll triumph on the land

dont turn your lovely head mate
bangers and mash i just ate
oh yeah
soccer match makes me knob rash

OH YEAHHHH
OH YEAHHHHHHHHH"

Posted by Twigs, Fuckin Twigs | December 17, 2008 3:37 PM

ohhhh twigs/ft, how you make me laugh!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 3:51 PM

Oasis has 8 UK #1 singles, Coldplay, Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs, Keane and Snow Patrol combined only have 1 UK #1 single. Coldplay isn't as big as Oasis in England. Just look what Oasis did this past month. They sold almost a million tickets to see them, Kasabian and The Enemy at soccer stadiums throughout Britain. Coldplay is playing arenas and only Wembley. Coldplay is only big as a cross over band. Oasis is huge both in the UK, Europe and Japan.

Read a fucking book.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 3:53 PM

Every indie band that is written about on this site hopes to be as big as Oasis one day. Sorry to burst the hipster bubble but they all play music commercially for that reason.

Posted by loop | December 17, 2008 3:56 PM

Well said 3:53. Coldplay is nowhere near Oasis fame in the UK. Not even close. Don't get me wrong, Coldplay blows Oasis out of the water in the US but in the UK, Oasi reign King.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 3:56 PM

A classic performance for those also going to MSG tonight and a lesson for those who dont grasp the greatness of this band!

Great show from Maine Road.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 4:04 PM

90% of the bands people hype on this site nobody will be talking about in 2010. It is the fickle nature of the current music scene. Oasis is made to last. 1994-and counting.....

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 4:17 PM

of course they are going to reunite. their probably all fucking broke. money, money, money!!!

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 4:17 PM

okay, okay: Oasis > Hanson

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 4:18 PM

oasis fucking sucks. talentless

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 4:22 PM

I made a poem:

Oasis is like a mountain

It will endure

snow can grow on it, you can store waste inside it

chop off the top, etc

Live on its forested flanks and spread your beard

hurt someone in a cabin

all this is made possible by Oasis being a mountain.

Posted by Tw/F.Tw | December 17, 2008 4:37 PM

the Stone Roses' first album is the best album of all time. at least it's my favorite.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 5:05 PM

Oasis didn't steal from Joe Satriani like Coldplay did.

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 5:15 PM

I hope they dont suck like the Verve did when they reunited

Posted by Anonymous | December 17, 2008 7:43 PM

For any band to have the longevity Oasis has had is pretty damn good. I agree, I can't say that about 90% of the bands listed on this site. Oh and last night's set was amazing.
