Many predicted that Deerhunter would get Pitchfork's #1 album of 2008, but in fact they gave it to Fleet Foxes. Bradford Cox should still be happy with both Deerhunter at #5 and Atlas Sound at #26 though. Speaking of Bradford Cox, he blogged this...
Just got of the phone with Brian Weitz [Geologist of Animal Collective]. This was sent out via the bands email earlier this morning:Previously there was whole Web Sheriff / Grizzly Bear thing. It was also announed that the album is coming out early on vinyl. It better be good!"it has come to my attention that 2 full length tracks off of our upcoming album, merriweather post pavilion have surfaced online. david, noah, and I please ask that someone assist us and leak all of the remaining tracks on the album.
the album is intended to be heard as a whole, and nothing bothers us more than individual tracks leaking and ruining the the overall album experience
-brian Geologist"
Total Bullshit. Someone actually had the nerve to hack into their e-mail account and send this out. The truth is that AC do not want their album to leak and are trying very hard to avoid the drama around said album that has risen to a fever pitch.
I am not trying to involve myself in AC's business, I am just voicing my own independent opinion.
Back in the 90's when I was first starting to make 4-track tapes I had a game where I would make a fake version of an album I was anticipating. If Pavement's Brighten the Corners were coming out soon, I had to wait till release day to hear it. I would record a set of songs that I would want the Pavement album to sound like. Some of those songs ended up becoming Atlas Sound and Deerhunter songs years later.
My advice to those who are so desperate for AC's album to leak is to pick up instruments and make your own version of what you would want it to sound like. Respect the BANDS wishes and wait till release day. Then you can compare your new songs with theirs. Who knows. Maybe your album will be the one people are wanting to leak next year. -Bradford

I'm just happy Lil' Wayne didn't finish in the top 3....I def thought P4k would've given "Weezy" #2. Holla!

how did Hot Chip make the top 25?
Also, they included all these DJ mixes and hip hop albums, but metal gets totally shafted and moved to honorable mention or not at all. Nachtmystium? Torche? Harvey Milk?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:09 AM
Bradford is nuts and I love him for it.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:12 AM
max silvestri--the east coast's handsomest comedian?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:13 AM
I really didn't think they were going to give it to Fleet Foxes. I figured all the mainstream attention the band has been getting would have disqualified them.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:13 AM
My guess is Animal Collective wants to strangle Bradford right about now
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:19 AM
The Mae Shi shouldn't have been in the Top 25, maybe not even the Top 50. I'm also surprised at Hot Chip making the cut, but I guess that goes to show their reviews are subjective to just the person who wrote the review. (The Gaslight Anthem got an 8.6 this year = Doesn't count in Pitchfork Year End List land)
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:19 AM
Department of Eagles got robbed yo
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:26 AM
Mae Shi and DJ/Rupture were great albums but their placing undermined the whole honorable mentions ruling.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:28 AM
i was hoping to see Jucifer somewhere on the list. L'Autrichienne is top 10 for me
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:29 AM
"I really didn't think they were going to give it to Fleet Foxes. I figured all the mainstream attention the band has been getting would have disqualified them."
Pitchfork is part of the mainstream.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:37 AM
How is it possibble that THE MAE Shi beat Crystal Stilts, The Walkmen, Atlas Sound, Titus Andronicus, Kanye West, Santogold, The Dodos, Torche, Harvey Milk, Department of Eagles, Times New Viking, The Bug, Nick Cave...
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:38 AM
I predict Merriweather Post Pavillion will be #3 in 2009
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:41 AM
Merriwather Post Pavillion should've been on dat list. Liek two of the songs are already amazing and released, it should be number one.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:45 AM
Pitchfork usually gives #1 to a pretty obvious pick. I knew they would give it to that shitty Fleet Foxes album. Actually there is nothing on the list that really surprised me other than Dodos not being in the Top 50 at all.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:52 AM
not surprised fleet foxes got it.... it is a great album.... though a little confused as to how kanye ended up on the list in spite of it getting a seven-point-something, while the dodos and department of eagles both recieve best new music honors and get mere honorable mentions.... it wouldn't annoy me so much if it wasn't kanye.... i hate that man.

"I'm also surprised at Hot Chip making the cut, but I guess that goes to show their reviews are subjective to just the person who wrote the review. (The Gaslight Anthem got an 8.6 this year = Doesn't count in Pitchfork Year End List land)"
I don't think the numerical ratings on individual albums are as subjective to the reviewer as you think. They don't let an 8.6 get out without a roundtable discussion for sure.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 9:54 AM
also, about deerhunter.... i love their new album, it's one of my faves for the year, and they are great live.... but does that new guitarist actually add anything to the band other than dress like a cheerleader sometimes and act annoying?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:00 AM
A lot of dance music on this list. Cut Copy over TVOTR is just stupid.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:04 AM
i totally agree with that comment above and who the fuck cares about this stupid drama about the leaking of the new animal collective?
shit's gonna be all over the internet in the next 24 hours anyways...morons.
Posted by d | December 19, 2008 10:09 AM
yeah, for all the grief that Pitchfork gets for well everything...I still think they have they best overall taste/scope of current music and put out the most superb year end lists.....it may sound like i'm kissing their ass but I think now more than ever websites like Pitchfork go a long way in reaffirming that not everyone in this country is musically retarded.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:11 AM
Bradford is officially THE most annoying "personality" out there.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:15 AM
"Also, they included all these DJ mixes and hip hop albums, but metal gets totally shafted and moved to honorable mention or not at all. Nachtmystium? Torche? Harvey Milk?"
I think there were all of two hip hop albums on the list. Go drink a cup of Drano and bang your head against a wall loser.

"Go drink a cup of Drano and bang your head against a wall loser."
YOU ARE FUNNY AND SMART!

"though a little confused as to how kanye ended up on the list in spite of it getting a seven-point-something, while the dodos and department of eagles both recieve best new music honors and get mere honorable mentions"
Those reviews and ratings are just the opinion of one person. The end of year lists are compiled from a bunch of people's opinions.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:38 AM
"Department of Eagles got robbed yo"
nah yo, Destroyer got robbed. that album wasnt even on the honorable mention list!

SOME GLARING OMISSIONS:
1. They must've just forgot about BON IVER, because living that album off the list is ridiculous.
2. The HARVEY MILK album is fantastic.
3. ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO'S album was stellar.
4. MGMT - "Oracular Spectacular"
5. FRIENDLY FIRES - "S/T"
6. THE WEEK THAT WAS - "S/T"
7. LATE OF THE PIER - "Fantasy Black Channel"
8. GLASVEGAS - "S/T"... very little UK love here
9. FOALS - "Antidotes"
10. SPIRITUALIZED - "Songs in A+E"
11. ELBOW - "Seldom Seen Kid"
12. SUN KIL MOON - "April"
13. Whatever that SIGUR ROS album was called
14. THE DODOS - "Visiter"
15. SHE & HIM - "Vol. 1" -- cute as a button.

"They must've just forgot about BON IVER, because living that album off the list is ridiculous."
Bon Iver was out in 2007 and in their top 50 of 2007 as they noted at the beginning of the list
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:46 AM
Atlas Sound was 26, not 25.
Just saying.
Posted by Jack | December 19, 2008 10:47 AM
"A lot of dance music on this list. Cut Copy over TVOTR is just stupid."
That's just, like, your opinion, man...
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:50 AM
yeah he really is annoying, isn't he? trying to inspire fans to be creative rather than pushy about having an album leak early - what is that! fuck that Bradford with his thinking.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:50 AM
"Atlas Sound was 26, not 25. "
fixed, thanks!
Posted by brooklynvegan | December 19, 2008 10:52 AM
Pattern Is Movement is the most glaring omission. I don't understand how PIM continue to make such great music and get robbed by critics and fans alike.

Mt. EERIE
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:54 AM
Hey, why wasn't my favorite band #1 and instead some other band was rated as the top album of the year? It is some sort of injustice and shows that everyone really has no clue about music and I think you shouldn't sell out. Rap music is not good but my favorite genre is the best. It's just a popularity contest and no one cares about the music. I think.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:57 AM
"Pattern Is Movement is the most glaring omission. I don't understand how PIM continue to make such great music and get robbed by critics and fans alike."
i am not sure how fans can rob PIM, by being fans, i would argue they are automatically helping them, you buying their music, supporting their shows, making posts on blogs raising awareness to how they get robbed on 'top album lists'...
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 10:58 AM
The Walkmen - you & me , by far the best of the year.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:01 AM
Bon Iver's album came out February '08... This is actual release dates and not "leak dates" right?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:06 AM
"Bon Iver's album came out February '08... This is actual release dates and not "leak dates" right? "
wrong. It was REISSUED in February 2008. It came out in 2007.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:11 AM
31 albums better than Nick Cave in 2008? Wrong.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:11 AM
whoa, I'm pretty happy P3 is #2 - especially since it's not that easy going down the ears if you weren't a fan already. it also goes to show older folks can make great music too!
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:17 AM
I love that Vampire Weekend writeup. "They're not that bad... people like them..."
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:22 AM
@Marlow ...If you want to get super-technical, MGMT's Oracular Spectacular came out *last* year. They released it digitally in October (when P4K reviewed it with a 6.8 rating).
I am one of Hot Chip's biggest supporters, but Made in the Dark hasn't really held up for me (wheras the Warning still does). And Cut Copy at #4???? The Metronomy record crushes both of those.
Agree with the rest of your list of ommissions, especially LotP, The Week That Was, and Elbow.
And I like Vivian Girls, but the Crystal Stilts album is way better.
Posted by bill p | December 19, 2008 11:30 AM
"Mt. EERIE"
He did have three amazing releases all out this year.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:31 AM
no Black Kids?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:34 AM
Yeah that Vivian Girls album is good but not as good as people say it is. I don't think they are a band with very much staying power. I imagine their next album will sound exactly the same as this one.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:37 AM
Crystal Stilts > Vivian Girls
Posted by pitchfork messed it up | December 19, 2008 11:39 AM
Since Fleet Foxes won this year, do you think Peter Paul and Mary have a shot next year?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:40 AM
right on 1140.
Crosby > Stills < Nash
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:46 AM
Yeah the Mt.Eerie records are sooooooo good. Dawn is definitely one of my favorites of the year.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 11:51 AM
ahhhhhh i forgot.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 12:05 PM
TORCHE GOT SHAFTED!!! Really?! You guys couldn't put ONE metal album on the list?! Insted over hyped shitty bands like Crystal Skulls, Hot Chip, Fuck Button and bunch of bands who's names sound like types of scented candles.
Fleetfoxes is ok at best. To put it above a masterpeice like Portishead's Third is a joke to me.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 12:35 PM
"bunch of bands who's names sound like types of scented candles."
Not quite laughing out loud, but definitely chuckling under my breath - good one.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 12:40 PM
this list is really awful...no excuse
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 12:54 PM
New Day Rising can't be #1 every year guys
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 12:57 PM
Spiritualized gets no love...where is Fucked Up?
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 1:10 PM
i didn't like any records this year.
prolly won't like any next year either.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 1:26 PM
Alopecia!
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 1:40 PM
If Pitchfork was around in 1985 New Day Rising would probably come in around 42. The top 5 would be Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Lone Justice, Talking Heads, Run-DMC and Sade.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 2:00 PM
The Mae Shi was really strong. They deserve the nod for (finally) making a great record.
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 2:05 PM
I liked that new Cobralegs album.

anon @ 10:50
I wouldn't call that inspiring.
hardly....
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 5:54 PM
Yeah, of course the popular will out. How else can that MGMT song shoot up 60-odd places from one year to another? Groupthink is as groupthink does.
But hey, at least they (mostly) got the right albums, even if they are in the "wrong" order.
(I mean, personally I would've liked to see more metal [Torche/Disfear/etc] and techno [Move D + Benjamin Brunn/Shed/etc] on there, but can you really argue the lack of quality of what's actually there? It may not fit your personal aesthetic tastes, but that doesn't diminish the quality of most of the stuff on this list.)
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 7:35 PM
Hey, I wanna spread Whitney's legs and mount her, too!
Posted by Anonymous | December 19, 2008 7:58 PM
lol everybody has their opinions and their favorites. Pitchfork is just picking the top albums based of a general consensus of their staff's opinion. Pitchfork is somewhat "mainstream" in the world of Music lovers, but in the general scheme of the world it is not mainstream at all. It is not a source like MTV that truly is directly mainstream. Pitchfork does a pretty damn good job of showcasing good solid artists. Some of their stuff is directly mainstream and some is really underground. Some is in the middle of both. You can't hate them for doing what they are doing. It's nothing like a mainstream source though. "mainstream" is relative because some people think that if you can sell out shows then your mainstream. With the internet you can reach a VAT audience without ever being in the mainstream spotlight
