Inlets

Last Saturday, December 13th, I found myself at an intimate loft party in Williamsburg to see Sebastian Krueger's sad-pop song writing project, Inlets. The show was a pretty low key affair. People sitting on the center-of-the-room-staircase made the place seem full and active, but i'd be surprised if there were as many as 100 people there. The bartender was friendly and served complimentary beer and wine. Everybody seemed conversational and friendly and space didnt seem to be that much of an issue.
Fred Nicolaus of Department of Eagles played only a couple of songs (including one Dept of Eagles song), and Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors also played a short set. It seemed to take a long time for the third band Glass Ghost to get set up and then I didn't really enjoy their set as much as the people around me seemed to.
Inlets was a very nice professional step up in sound and presence. The arrangements at times were very full and accomplished, but also sounded appropriately sparse as well-- in some songs band members would drop out completely as the set went on.
Favorite moments were the toy piano melodies on one of the later songs, and when Beirut's Zach Condon watched from the upper balcony and joined on trumpet for the last song of the evening. Overall a pleasant and mellow show that was well-suited to the well-manicured loft space.

Beirut has three Brooklyn shows coming up. Department of Eagles are touring in January. Dirty Projectors are playing New Years Eve at Knitting Factory. More pictures from the loft party below...

How does one get into such a loft party? Or find out about them.

I was at the show. I found out about it by being cool.

You find out about these parties once you start being a hipster living in Hipsterville....
I mean look at all those people...just crossing their arms while watching some bands that we won't care about in 6 months.....looks like so much fun to me
snoozefestttt

i still don't understand the whole argument that people with crossed arms aren't enjoying the music. you expect people to be dancing and jumping around at bon iver or jose gonzalez?
Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:39 PM
No, but I try to avoid crossing my arms unless I am resisting something. Because that's what it conveys. Also, fair or not, it's like the quintessential expression of dull/insecure indieness.

Sometimes crossing your arms is just a comfortable position to stand in when you're not moving around very much. Are we supposed to stand with our arms at our sides the whole time? It doesn't mean anything. It just means you're listening and thinking about the music you're watching, and not particularly thinking about your arms.

Look, it's not always easy to know what to do with one's arms. But I am just telling you that in terms of body language, crossing them is a defensive posture. It might not be what you intend, but that's how it often comes across. I would hate to play to a room of motionless arm-folders. I usually hook my thumbs into my pockets myself.
Also rude- flagrant text messaging (see Fig. 10)

i can't believe you guys are having this argument. but i enjoy that it is a respectful argument based on respectable opinions with respectable thoughtful responses.

i want to be cool.
is crossing your arms the place to start?
Posted by anon | December 23, 2008 6:52 PM
@2:16 the text messenger was the sound guy. he doesnt need to pay attention to what the music sounds li-- wait a second...

Yeah, arm crossing. Now there's something that really matters and is worth talking about!

these photos are not that great.
they just depict the obvious. this photographer needs to take a break from the hipster show scenes and document something more worthwhile.
