"I used music a lot of young people wouldn't think was cool," explained El Guincho, whose moniker comes from an endangered Canary Islands bird. "My little cousins asked, `Why are you sampling all these old guys?'" Yet "Alegranza!"'s brilliant hodgepodge sounds decisively contemporary, falling somewhere between the refracted psychedelic sounds of Animal Collective, the hip-hop assemblage of the late genius J. Dilla, the 1960s acid-damaged tropicalia band Os Mutantes and the crackling African percussion ensemble Congotronics. [NY Times]Lemonade and El Guincho ended their short tour at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC last night (Dec 2, 2008). Kyle was impressed by opener Lemonade and mentioned looking forward to seeing them again when they open for Friendly Fires at The Annex on Tuesday December 9th. You can also catch them at Zebulon in Brooklyn on Friday December 5th.
El Guincho went on late. The advertised Tuesday night set time was 11 PM, but he didn't start until 12:20 and kept going until 1:30 AM. Not surprisingly, a bunch of people left before he finished - I think because they were tired. Other than that, people were dancing, there was a guest drummer, there were some covers, and at least one new song in salsa style.

The covers he played were of songs he samples on Alegranza!. And his understanding of salsa is of like 37 years into the future. New songs sounded great.

I had heard some of Lemonade's tracks before the show and thought they were pretty good, but their live show was pretty bad to me. The dude's vocals just did absolutely nothing to help the music. Then again it might just be the mushy sound system at LPR

true story about lemonade - guys need to realize more reverb doesn't equal better music. they should've left the vocals out entirely.
