Passion Pit signed to Columbia, played Glasslands - pics
photos by Bao Nguyen

"Buzz buzz! That's the sound of Passion Pit turning their newfound 'it band' status into concrete plans. For starters, the Boston area boys have signed to Columbia for the UK release of their debut EP, Chunk of Change, in February. Frenchkiss is still the band's home in the States and will actually co-release Chunk of Change in the UK with Columbia." [Pitchfork]Passion Pit played for about 30 minutes (they don't have that much material) to a packed (too packed?) Glasslands Gallery in Brooklyn on Friday night (12/5). Their next NYC show will be at Bowery Ballroom. All tour dates HERE. More pictures below...

Columbia paid like $1,000,000 for these kids... same advance as Black Kids... is an eight year old girl head of A&R over there? Next they will sign a Tickle Me Elmo doll to a 4 record 360 deal. And then give him his own vanity imprint.

Columbia will probably sign Fiasco next.
As for me, i don't get the obsession with passion pit, but the singer is a cutie patootie.

I keep hearing this one song by them on Sirius XMU by I shut it off right away because the sound effect they use in the beginning sounds like a dog being kicked.

i don't give a damn who they get signed to. i just hope this band fades away as quickly as they came.

It's always amazing to me that the BV readers 'know' so much about so & so's deals. $1,000, 000? Um.....? Prolly not mang.
Bet you this band drops a killer LP.
& Sweet pictures!!

what people don't get is that in the uk and europe these american "indie" bands on major labels get tons of radio airplay and are huge. like mgmt is a mid level indie band in the us but huge in europe (same with vampire weekend).

Frenchkiss Records scores another hit.

in regards to the first picture: Get that god damn camera out of my face!

Also, i'm pretty sure that Columbia UK and Columbia in the US are pretty different.
and i'm not sure if i'm the only one that pays attention to the fact that the entire record industry is imploding, but no one's getting big deals anymore. No one.

go french kiss!

Passion Pit are tight. Great hooks.

They did not get $1 million & they did not sign a 360 deal. Those are both facts.

i don't get it.

wow! great news! great pictures! can't wait to see them again at bb.
these guys make some great music. fun reading some of the stupid comments by the same idiots over and over again.

personally don't like the music, but good for these guys.
all y'all hating should be so lucky.
people that aren't you are going to sign record deals.
that said, there's no fucking way they got even close to a mil...as mentioned no one does anymore.
columbia is trying to stay afloat (like everyone else) and they're not retarded.

The first buzz band whose only buzz is among label execs who don't want to miss the next Vampire Weekend so they'll spend 500,000 GBP on the offchance this takes off. And if it doesn't, who cares, it's a tax writedown. They have a good lawyer, same lawyer who got 8 million for Interpol from the now-imploded Capitol.

you forgot to sign "xoxo"

that the band has limited material is a misconception. their full-length is nearly complete (according to blog) and the band has a few songs that didn't make the frenchkiss version of the EP. they're online.

To Brooklyn Vegan: These guys have more material than you know about, tons of it.
Anyone heard this?

Cuddle Fuddle remix Sound familiar?
Friends with Passion Pit.
Trust me. more material than they even know what to do with.

Passion Pit seems like good guys, and I wish them well, but it would be hard for me to not say that they are being way over-hyped. I saw them live twice, and simply put, they are terrible. Mainly the guys voice, but the music in general is sooo cheezy.

this is disheartening. Go to Tremont and Boylston St at Emerson College and root through the freshman smoking cigarettes outside the Little Building. You might just find the next Columbia signees. And before Black Kids, that shitty band "Boys and Girls"?
Seriously. I remember seeing a flyer posted a few years ago where a kid recently signed to Columbia was looking to audition a band to play for him. And that's how that turned out.
Michael Angelakos just did the legwork himself, shanghai'd some Berklee kids, and they still suck.
Seriously, I sold that kid some cut blow a few years ago and he didn't even know the difference. Hehe.

Didn't you mention that like 7 months ago? (the blow comment)
You're just a dick for admitting you sell cut blow.
Cheap asshole.

Matthew Dear is cool and talented. Better than Herbert in his early of late career? I don't agree.
