I know some people will love this, but I cannot imagine a worse lineup personally.

Oh Yoshimi!!!!!!

Posted by battlestar galactica | December 11, 2008 9:50 AM

NICE!!!!!!

The flaming lips is exciting, but I'm MUCH more excited to see who their picks will be. Now I feel much better about buying that ticket before the lineup was announced.

Posted by noamjamski | December 11, 2008 9:54 AM

I thought this festival was for serious music fans. That's what made the last one so great. By now I would imagine even the flaming lips themselves are tired of their own shtick. I can only imagine the mediocrity Wayne will select to curate.

I spent a lot of my buying an early ticket and room, and am incredibly pissed.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 9:54 AM

AAWWEESSOOMMEE!!!!! SOUNDS GREAT!!!!

btw, HOW HOW HOW are Atlas Sound listed at the top right next to the Flaming Lips???!?!! They are really not that good!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 9:55 AM

I can't wait for Coachella to announce their line-up! Who can we expect?

The Killers
Blur or Gorillaz
Muse
Arctic Monkeys
David Bowie
Outkast
The Cure
The Chemical Brothers
Broken Social Scene
The Mars Volta
Pavement
Boards of Canada
Daft Punk
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Fleet Foxes

Hopefully no....
1) Oasis
2) Kanye West
3) Coldplay
4) Morrissey

hope wayne does that thing where he walks in the ball over the crowd. that's so cool.

Posted by jan janson | December 11, 2008 10:03 AM

This such an early lineup... I don't think people should be too worried at the moment.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:03 AM

O
M
G

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:05 AM

well, you are douchebag

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:06 AM

Did they have cinema last year?

Posted by anonymous2 | December 11, 2008 10:07 AM

So, lemme get this straight, mr. anonymous 9:54... you bought a ticket and room before most of the lineup was even announced, and are now "incredibly pissed" that you don't like one of the bands playing?

Congratulations, you're an idiot.

Posted by Mark | December 11, 2008 10:07 AM

yes. i too am an idiot. fuck. i hate the flaming lips. i demand the jesus lizard, pavement, portishead, or something comparable.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:10 AM

Shit's gettin' interesting up in here now!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:12 AM

who's left to add? Phish?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:14 AM

Yes!
That place was so fun last time.
Yes!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:15 AM

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Bring on the laser balloon.

Posted by maitai | December 11, 2008 10:15 AM

Stardeath and White Dwarfs...obviously.
most likely deerhoof, Sonic Youth, Polyphonic Spree, and modest Mouse.

Posted by D.D.D.Dave | December 11, 2008 10:25 AM

at least we get autolux and black dice. ho hum. need jesus lizard headlining saturday. need it.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:27 AM

the dirty three are one of the best live bands of the past 15 years and ocean songs is their finest record.

i think it's a great lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:29 AM

this is pretty weak

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:33 AM

i'm very curious as to what bands all the nay-sayers would consider to be a good lineup? or are you actually too cool to even listen to music?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:39 AM

Yawn

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:40 AM

Lol-la-pa-snooza Redux, this show will only be interesting if there is a bunch of 'fungus' being handed out at the gate or being put in the pierogies or something... ho hum... maybe they will choose G&R to play... but seriously I would love to see Hank III.

Posted by Obama's_Music_Czar | December 11, 2008 10:43 AM

i'm very curious as to what bands all the Yeasayers would consider to be a good lineup? or are you actually too cool to even listen to music?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:43 AM

Portishead would of been perfect probably within atp's budget, and within the realm of possibility.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:45 AM

i could not imagine a better room for the lips to play.

they should bring on some good choices.

you have to think, they needed to pick a band that they can keep the fest at 3000 people.

perfect choice.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:50 AM

except autolux!

Posted by la sux | December 11, 2008 10:51 AM

Yawn

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 10:55 AM

who are the lips friends with / have they toured with? real curious to see who they are going to pick.

and anyone that was there for this year's can attest that they are a perfect band for that room.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:07 AM

ATP NY set its own bar to match by having MBV curate the first one and this certainly doesn't look like it will even come close. oh well, i guess there's always next year to wait out for pavement...what's another year after 10 have passed already?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:08 AM

I like the lips. they will make the venue fun. I think they will deliver the bands many will want to see. Also, its up to ATP to pick bands as well. I have to admit I am excited to see how this turns out.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:13 AM

i hope steve vai plays.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:15 AM

i'm pretty underwhelmed by the flaming lips announcement

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:16 AM

they'll bring on beck.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:27 AM

on saturday..."Animal Collective, Antipop Consortium, Atlas Sound, Autolux,"

if ATP wants to keeping adding bands who start w/ A, at least pick some interesting ones...how about:

Able Tasmans
Angel'in Heavy Syrup
Acid Mothers Temple
Afghan Whigs
Amon Duul (either I or II)
Autechre

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:29 AM

well if we want to get into the Lips' collective heads, their 'late night tales' comp isn't a bad place to start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.html?curid=2384123

i'd definitely vote for Eno, Roxy Music, Chameleons, Lush, Psych Furs and Faust.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:31 AM

SATRIANI!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:40 AM

Aphex Twin (anther "A") on the Lips day would be good, and definitely a possibility.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:43 AM

no love for Yngwie Malmsteem?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 11:50 AM

i was hoping pavement would do this. but this is cool i guess.

Posted by dan | December 11, 2008 11:56 AM

Pavement is never coming back...it will be OK.

Posted by sloweducation | December 11, 2008 12:03 PM

December 11, 2008 11:07 AM:

Sonic Youth toured with them back in 2006 i think. plus the Youth are friends of ATP. if you can get up there it's definitely worth the trip, last year was amazing.

Posted by jason | December 11, 2008 12:07 PM

Satriani vs. Coldplay MC battle....Chris Martin spittin' venom on all yall suckas!

Axl Rose & Scott Weiland vs. Slash & Anthony Kiedis mud wrestling double team cage match to the death starting at midnight on the first night w/ live musical accompaniment under full moon light !

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:26 PM

oh boy more david cross

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:31 PM

only if the live musical accompaniment is satriani playing viva la vida repeatedly

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:33 PM

what these comments need are more recycled coldplay/satriana jokes. it's almost as funny as the average carrot top bit.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:35 PM

Carrot Top is playing ATP? Now you're talking!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:42 PM

Ween, please. they've played with the Lips before

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:45 PM

Shellac will probably be added, they seem to play every ATP event.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:56 PM

Shelter will probably be added, they seem to play every ATP Krishna-core event.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 12:58 PM

yeah. a lot of people seem to be pissed, but i think it works. that room was made for them to play. they have heady taste and resources to guarantee a great lineup, not to mention a catalog of music and great theatrics. i am certain they will pull out the big guns for this special opportunity to show the world that they are not just a disposable festival band, but a psychedelic phenomenon.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:09 PM

Earth Crisis

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:09 PM

Who/what do the ladies want to see ?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:15 PM

yngwie doing earth crisis covers.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:17 PM

sarah silverman, sandra bernhard, eleanor freidberger, CSS, mira belotte, jenny lewis ... wet t-shirt competition judged by david patterson, plaxico burress & philipe de montebello.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:24 PM

remember that Flaming Lips tour where they brought on Cake (BARF), De La Soul (YAY) and Hackensaw Boys (MEH)

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:26 PM

QUESTION....

With the Shelter and Earth Crisis comments...How many people on BV used to be totally into mid-90's hardcore besides me?

I used to think Snapcase and Orange 9mm were amazing and anything like Radiohead or Belle and Sebastian was total wus crap...hahaa!

ps- I haven't listened to 25 ta Life in around 10 years....soooo HC! hahaha!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 1:50 PM

Unlimited Sunshine! With Modest Mouse and Kinky too. I went in Sacramento, it was totally terrifying

Posted by shelbyC | December 11, 2008 1:50 PM

hahaha. guilty, tho i still listened to wus crap like the cure and r.e.m.

tension! yuppicide, VOD, quicksand, helmet...

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 2:00 PM

Hahaha! I totally thought listening to VOD, Strife, and Earth Crisis made me sooo cool and tough! Now stuff like Phosphorescent and Fleet Foxes and are more my speed. Growing up is a real eye opener :)

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 2:07 PM

bullshit, fuck the flaming lips, minehead gets THE JESUS LIZARD and australia gets NICK CAVE and we get a fucking burnt out hippie faggot, great.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 2:16 PM

Wow. 2:16. be cool man. its thursday.

Posted by sloweducation | December 11, 2008 2:27 PM

Thank christ i didn't buy my tickets early. With ALL the possibilities, this is disappointing. They needed to at least try to match MBV, and this doesn't come close.

Posted by zik | December 11, 2008 2:38 PM

Shut up you whining brats!

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 2:41 PM

How can people not be tired of the Flaming Lips by now? I swear they are at every festival I've gone to for the past 5 years.

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 2:48 PM

all these assholes are just pissed they didn't go last year.

i did.

and i am psyched for this year.

ticket bought and hotel booked.

the final lineup will be outstanding like every other atp

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 3:06 PM

Some people should switch to decaf...

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 3:14 PM

Can we veto the curator?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 3:27 PM

xxx STREET BY STREET, BLOCK BY BLOCK, TAKING IT ALL BACKKKKKK! xxx

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 3:52 PM

Anyone have an extra spot in their room? Bought a ticket when they announced AC/Panda Bear, but by that point only 7-person rooms were available.

I'm friendly, clean and generally don't shit on other people's music tastes.

Posted by A Roach | December 11, 2008 4:11 PM

are rooms already sold out at that shithole?

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 4:32 PM

The Flaming Lips will be awesome curators! Stop whining about Pavement already! or Nick Cave! Who cares, don't go then. This is such a perfect set up for the Lips and they will make it a ton of FUN!

I went to MBV and that was great and I already bought tickets and booked for '09. Matching MBV is pointless because the possibilities of matching them are very limited. So everybody needs a reality check. All in all good choice.

BTW, hey Anon 2:16 you sound like your extremely intelligent, can you refrain from the ignorant, offensive vocabulary? Thanks

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 4:58 PM

I'm not ashamed to admit I love the Lips live. If you aren't happy after a set by the Lips I don't need to know you. They haven't made an actually good album in years, but the live experience kinda makes up for it. I even forgive them for playing all those shitty hippie festivals.

I wanted it to be Pavement too, but the Pavement live experience is nowhere near as consistent as the Lips. I've seen Pavement crash & burn as many times as they've been awesome.

Unlimited Sunshine (as scary as it was) was kind of more Cake's gig I thought. For a better taste of the Lips curatorial taste, try the "Music Against Brain Degeneration Tour" from 1999: Flaming Lips, Sebadoh, Robyn Hitchcock, Cornelius, and IQU. One of the only times Cornelius has done a lengthy US tour. I hope they're brought back.

I'm very curious to see the final line-up and I agree, haters need to drink decaf.

Posted by Ajax Comment | December 11, 2008 5:31 PM

good call on unlimited sunshine

lips know what's up. there was a scary time when bands we know and love (butthole surfers even) got stuck playing for shitty crowds...

thank god they are back and with a vengeance

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 5:38 PM

"remember that Flaming Lips tour where they brought on Cake (BARF), De La Soul (YAY) and Hackensaw Boys (MEH)"

Flaming Lips didn't curate this. They were actually billed below De La Soul and the headliners Cake...

Posted by Anonymous | December 11, 2008 6:31 PM

I wonder if we could petition the Flaming Lips to only play songs pre soft bulletin or even better, pre-transmission from the satellite heart. I can only listen to priest driven ambulance anymore...Disappointed to say the least, but Ill prolly still go again.

Posted by Ian | December 11, 2008 6:58 PM

"Flaming Lips didn't curate this. They were actually billed below De La Soul and the headliners Cake..."

I was going to say same thing. Unlimited Sunshine was a tour put together by Cake, not the Lips. I saw both Brooklyn shows.

One tour the Lips put together was the Brain Degeneration tour with Sebadoh, ICQ, Cornelious, Robyn Hitchcock and others.

"I wonder if we could petition the Flaming Lips to only play songs pre soft bulletin or even better,"

Yes! The best Lips era was the Ronald Jones years. I really like their new stuff, but the karaoke shows get boring after a bit. Then again, I have seen them 3-4 times per album for the last 5 albums. Bring back the rock and forget the karaoke.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 12:06 AM

flaming lips are shit. i have little faith in their curating abilities. we might get sonic youth, whoop-de-shit, i've never seen sonic youth before.

let's look at the other atps this year - nick cave, check. the jesus lizard, check. the breeders, check. the flaming lips? embarrassing. hope tickets sell fast, all americans are good for is this pitchfork-approved trash. animal collective have a good shot at headlining saturday, killing my hopes of a shellac return, and the flaming lips choices are up in the air. friday has the best chance of being killer.

i went to the mbv atp. nothing to be jealous about. shit is shit. will i go? maybe. it was a definite yes with any lineup after the last experience, but there's a grand total of three bands i'm willing to see on the lineup right now, so maybe my excitement was premature. it still has a chance of being solid - throw some classic ATP choices up there with the bullshit on saturday and hope the flaming lips come through with at least enough bands to satisfy my heading to the bar early on sunday and we're good.

and for the record, atp matched mbv and then some - in minehead, with the jesus lizard.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 7:48 AM

to clarify: i have no reason to be jealous of last year's lineup, as i went. it was not a shit show. that said, mbv didn't even scrape the top ten.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 7:51 AM

Almost every band that played ATP also played NYC. I'll wait for the local shows.

The Flaming Lips are great, but the same show year after year with only a few new videos does get boring after a awhile.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 9:06 AM

7:48 pretty much channeled all i was going to add.

do you believe in out of body experiences?

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 11:46 AM

mercy, ny is filled with twits.

Posted by Anonymous | December 12, 2008 2:26 PM

i justify it thus:
i was excited about mbv. they were god-awful. pointless. boring. too loud. didn't sound good. standing in place strumming along to a tape of loveless. i left after three songs, and again, i was REALLY looking forward to seeing them. however, the festival as a whole was great. many many good sets, and good memories.
now, i don't really care for the flaming lips. however, it is a relatively safe bet they'll put on a better show than mbv, especially with my lower expectations factored in. so, all atp needs to do is book about ten more good bands and i'll be a happy camper.

Posted by Anonymous | December 15, 2008 4:12 PM

is it worth staying on site?

Posted by Anonymous | December 21, 2008 6:49 PM

The worst 3 words in the world.

Serious. Music. Fans.

How dull.

Posted by Chris | January 13, 2009 3:49 PM

rooms at the kutshers are filling up, only 6 and 7 person rooms accomodations available... that didn't happen that fast last year.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 5:36 PM

748 from a few weeks ago, can't believe you would want to see shellac again. they play almost every ATP event. id rather vomit in my gym shorts and try to sit ups.

really the breeders have more integrity than the flaming lips ?
