King Khan & BBQ Show

King Khan & The BBQ Show played their 2nd of two Thanksgiving-weekend shows in NYC last night (Sunday, 11/30) at Bowery Ballroom with the A-Bones (a band that features Ira from Yo La Tengo as a member) and Vivian Girls (the makers of the 4th best album of the year according to Gorilla vs Bear). Their (KK & BBQ) next show, as just announced, is this Wednesday at the WIRED Store. Vivian Girls' next local show is New Years Eve at Wellmont Theater with Yo La Tengo. One of VG's other recent NYC shows didn't have King Khan on the bill, but he was also there.

King Khan & BBQ didn't release much this year, but King Khan and the Shrines did release "The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines" on VICE which at least one person thinks was one of the best albums of the year.

Beneath all the campiness and cellulite, is there anything redeeming about this act?

Why don't you post more pitcures of Vivian Girls instead of that fat slob that goes by the name of King Khan....btw Vivian Girls are cute but they still make good music.....Well Cassie and Katy are cute, it's too bad Frankie didn't stay in the band because then they would be the hottest hipsters making music lol

What was the cover that Vivian Girls played last night as the 2nd to last or last song, I didn't hear them when they said what it was a cover of and it was really good...I know you girls read this blog so a response would be greatly appreciated....keep it up girlzzz

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 3:35 PM

That first picture is too painful to look at.

It's probably the beach boys cover they have on their new 7 inch. Just guessing I haven't heard it or anything.

I'm guessing that it's "Girl Don't Tell Me", which was originally on the Beach Boys' Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) album. I saw "Girl" listed on the setlist above in one of the photos and they played it when I saw them back in September here in Philly but not the other night when I was saw them again (also with King Khan & BBQ Show) a few nights before that Bowery show. I didn't know they've already recorded it, though. I'll have to investigate.

Is that the Asian Beatle Bob?

Posted by Anonymous | December 1, 2008 6:15 PM

I wonder if the kids in the audience even knew that Ira the great was performing on stage before them during The A-Bones set.

Is there a place that BrooklynVegan keeps all its pictures? I was at both king khan shows and I must say the saturday show was 10x better. That one black kid dancing on stage was intense.

As amazing as the music is.. that first picture is highly unnecessary...Lol.. his outfit is a clash of don't do it and too late to turn back...like those assless chaps on Prince

Posted by MiaAlien | December 1, 2008 7:58 PM

so wrong

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 12:36 AM

beatle bob doesn't wear motorcycle jackets and that man is hopefully something more similar to being hispanic!

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 5:29 AM

King Kahn & BBQ have written some of the best, modern trash-ass updates of gut-wrenching doo-wop and Sam Cooke sounds (and check the Mark Sultan CD on In the Red for more proof of his great voice), and it's too bad saps can't get up the gumption to see past their shtick to hear it (though of course the band plays up the shtick...). The Vivian Girls are boring, unless you've never heard/seen three girls play in a band before. Gawd, indie boys are easy to sway! -- just like the jocks they make fun of. And that "Beatle Bob" you suckers are wondering about is the great Edgar. He's from Peru, and he was drinking you under the table when you were still at your momma's teet.

Why do you promote that talentless lard ass?

His music isn't memorable, original, its all about the show. And the show sucks.

All King Khan cares about is money

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 10:31 AM

hardly "amazing"

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 11:21 AM

king khan and bbq were fucking great. that show also made me a much bigger appreciator of the vivian girls. their music's pretty damn good and they aren't too bad to look at.

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 11:22 AM

anyone know why viv girls play Squiers?
i actually like what music of theirs i've heard, am just puzzled as to their axe choice.

Posted by the jim | December 2, 2008 3:31 PM

king khan is YAAAAAAWWWWWNNN

Posted by Anonymous | December 2, 2008 3:35 PM

Talentless fat guy on stage with shirt off= Indie music blogs drool over. Between this and Les Savy FaV , there's a disturbing pattern
and vivian girls!! c'mon .... they're so punk rock... suburban jersey girls please!
