the Magnetic Fields @ Loew's, Jersey City (more by Chris La Putt)
the Magnetic Fields

As Walter kindly first pointed out, The Magnetic Fields (who are currently working on a new album) are opening for Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's in Hoboken tonight, Monday December 22nd - the second night of Hanukkah. You could say that night two ticketholders won the opener lottery.

Oneida, Britt Daniel and Janet Weiss all showed up last night. Metal Mountains are opening night eight. Who will open nights three, four, five, six and seven? Gut Bank?

"You could say that night two ticketholders won the opener lottery."

That's only if you like the MF. I never cared for them, so I am glad they are opening a show that I am not going to. I have seem much better openers during the Hannukah shows (Volcano Suns, dBs, Consonant, Sun Ra Arkestra).

More power to you if you like them.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 1:13 PM

will it be the same acoustic show as Town Hall or will they plug in??

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 1:17 PM

I totally count myself as a lottery winner! I wonder if they'll bring Georgia up for her 6ths song?

At this point, I kind of don't even care who the comedian is...

thank god for these twice-a-day YLT updates!!! what would we do without them???

i hate this time of year.

im stuck with sat night tix...

in the past, ive been to the hanukah shows on weekends and the openers usually werent as good...endless boogie last year if i remember...though alex chilton did come and play 3-4 songs which ruled.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:09 PM

I am not going to this show, but I do think it is a really good lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:29 PM

Will any black people show up?

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:32 PM

Tim Roth (spoken word) on the 25th

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:45 PM

aw man, the actor? really? dangit, I'll be on the other side of the world.

Posted by Lori | December 22, 2008 2:51 PM

Tim Roth is black?

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:51 PM

"You could say that night two ticketholders won the opener lottery."

Not sure if this is set in stone about Magnetic Fields or any of the other supposed "leaks" but even if it is true, the statement above is pretty stupid. Which is saying a lot for this site, from the reviews of shows you do not even attend, to the blocking and censoring as well as the very questionable observations by the morons on here as to what is a special show or what bands are actually good. Magnetic Fields is far from the lottery winner. A good but not amazingly great band. Their concerts this year have not been that good. Another overhyped hipster sensation.
I would say if that rumor is true(which i doubt) that Bill Murray and She and Him are one night, that would be a much bigger event than tonite. As well, Gut Bank would be phenomenal and maybe with Bob Bert playing drums. But 99% of you idiots probably have no idea who they were.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:55 PM

spoken word is black?

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 2:57 PM

FYI-you can always get tickets for these shows if you go to Maxwells on the night of the show. I have never had a problem ever.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:00 PM

isn't this just a rumor?

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:00 PM

2:55 is cool.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:00 PM

"A good but not amazingly great band."

2:55 -this statement is ridiculous. Who are you to be an authority on this?

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:04 PM

2:55 is going to get censored in about 5 minutes.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:05 PM

Who's doing comedy?!

Posted by Tim Duffy | December 22, 2008 3:11 PM

i think 2:55 is the comedian although he/she is starting their act a little early

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:14 PM

The Magnetic Fields are legends that can headline Town Hall. I'd say tonight's peeps are getting their money worth and then some.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:23 PM

Schizophrenia (pronounced /ˌskɪtsəˈfrɛniə/ or /ˌskɪtsəˈfriːniə/), from the Greek roots schizein (σχίζειν, "to split") and phrēn, phren- (φρήν, φρεν-, "mind") is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. It most commonly manifests as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social or occupational dysfunction.

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 3:25 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 4:51 PM

"I call BS in this rumor. Since when have YLT played with hacks?"

1) Kimya is not a hack
2) She is town at that time. She's playing Bowery on December 26th and staying until NY until after the new year

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 4:54 PM

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 7:17 PM

i heard it's david cross tonight

Posted by Anonymous | December 22, 2008 7:18 PM

Close on the GBV prediction. Doug Gillard and Ira's mom were the guests tonight. John Hodgman was the comedian.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:50 AM

Ira’s mom was in the first version of GbV in 1958.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 9:09 AM

Did Ira's mom sing "My Little Corner of the World"? I have seen here sing that before at a Hanukkah show.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 9:28 AM

Yup, she kept the tradition alive and sang My Little Corner of the World to close the show. It was very sweet.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 9:42 AM

what a great night

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 10:46 AM

Been there, done that

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 10:57 AM

no magnetic fields reviews?

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 10:58 AM

Michael Emerson (Ben from LOST) was at the show. Mind was blown.

Posted by wowwwwwww | December 23, 2008 11:55 AM

was he really?!?!??!?

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:09 PM

for those curious, daft punk came on at exactly 1:42 in the morning.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:15 PM

so did the magnetic fields open? Did they play acoustic or did they plug in and rock out?

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:24 PM

MF always play acoustic.

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 12:49 PM

There were a few LOST cast members there. Was it filming nearby or something? It was great to see Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond).

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 1:00 PM

anyone have a set list from last night? what covers did they do?

Posted by Anonymous | December 23, 2008 2:43 PM
