DOWNLOAD: The Welcome Wagon - Sold! To the Nice Rich Man (MP3)

Welcome Wagon

The debut album by The Welcome Wagon unveils a ramshackle sing-a-long enterprise of a Presbyterian pastor (the Rev. Vito Aiuto) and his wife (Monique) wrestling out the influences of folk music, religion, popular culture, and church tradition in a collection of songs that is as soulful as it is good-humored. This gorgeous brew is reflected in the group's repertoire, which unflinchingly consolidates a vast history of "sacred" song traditions: from Old Testament psalms, to Presbyterian Psalters of the 17th century, to iconoclastic pop innovators of the 1960s (The Velvet Underground), to charismatic Catholics of the 1970s (Lenny Smith), and into the melancholy lovelorn pop of the 1980s (The Smiths). There are even a few originals. Armed with a particleboard parlor guitar and a plastic glockenspiel, pastor and wife stumble their way through an arresting catalog of hymns--hallowed and unholy--with the simple desire to know their Maker--and to know each other--more intimately. The result--due, in part, to producer/arranger Sufjan Stevens--is an awe-inspiring collection of hymns, pop covers, and originals that render soulful stunts from quiet skirmishes of home recordings. [Asthmatic Kitty]
Since we were already on the subject of Asthmatic Kitty releases that Sufjan is involved with that are coming out next week, I thought it was a good time to mention this one too. Welcome to the Welcome Wagon is out December 9th which is the same night of the release show at a church in Brooklyn...

Sufjan has been putting out a lot of mediocre acts on his label. not sure what he's thinking. does he make money from this stuff?

they signed a ton of artists in the past year.

why would want to listen to religious music? They don't even do it creatively and sound just like sufjan. Was actually looking forward to this album until I listened and then it was all about Jesus. I guess going to catholic school for 12 years gave me my fill of Jesus.

The 1990s saw an explosion of Christian Rock, heavily inspired by the success of U2, as well as by the musical style of grunge bands such as Pearl Jam and Nirvana (which were not Christian bands). Other influences were Death Cab For Cutie and some of the Indie rock scene, along with Oasis. Many of the popular 90s Christian bands were initially identified as "Christian Alternative Rock", including DC Talk, Newsboys, Jars of Clay, Audio Adrenaline, Kutless, Relient K, and others. Outside anglophone countries, bands like Oficina G3 (Brazil), Rescate (Argentina) and The Kry (Quebec, Canada), have achieved moderate success. This decade also saw a notable boom in the Christian / R&B / Hip Hop / Rap, and the Christian / Punk / Pop, and Christian / Metal / Death Metal circles.

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the demise of Creed and the success of Christian-inspired acts like Thousand Foot Krutch, Decyfer Down, Underoath saw a shift toward mainstream exposure in the Christian Rock scene. Tooth & Nail Records saw their growing roster of artists and bands gain wider popularity and acclaim despite existing outside the walls of a traditional mainstream industry.[citation needed] Also many other modern punk bands have succeeded in the industry, like Stellar Kart, Relient K, Hawk Nelson, Through A Glass, and Blessthefall.

Although christian rock used to be a protestant christianity phenomena, late 1980's and 1990's saw rise of many orthodox christian rock groups, most of them originating from Russia and Soviet Union. Alisa[1] and Black Coffee[2] are credited as most prominent examples. Orthodox christian lyrics of these bands often overlap with historical and patriotic songs about ancient Rus.

Why haven't they learned that if it sucks in Nashville, it'll still suck in NYC and LA?
