DOWNLOAD: Animal Collective - My Girls (Mexicans with Guns Remix) (MP3)

Animal Collective

"We were really pulling for Panda Bear and crew. When I wrote last week that Animal Collective might make it onto the Billboard 200 charts this week based on the first-week sales of the vinyl edition of their Merriweather Post Pavilion album, the underdog quality of that potential feat was kind of exciting ... and subversive.

But, alas, despite selling out all 4,500 copies of the first run of Pavilion almost instantly across North America, with so many of those sales happening in indie shops that don't report to Nielsen SoundScan, the scrappy sonic experimentalists just didn't make the cut.

According to next week's Billboard albums chart, Pavilion officially moved 1,500 copies, which put them just outside the big game, even in this moribund time of year when the majority of the albums in the top 200 saw double-digit sales dips. Had they been able to scare up another 1,000 official sales, they might have sneaked in above the likes of former "American Idol" Kellie Pickler, Lifehouse, OneRepublic and Framing Hanley, all of whom sold in the 2,400 realm, which was enough to sneak them onto the bottom of the charts.

Better luck next week, when Pavilion is officially released on January 20, with a good chance to score an old-fashioned chart debut thanks to the flood of already rapturous reviews it's received as one of the best albums of the year so far." [MTV]

Today is January 20th. Obama is about to become president. Merriweather Post Pavilion is out. Hipster Runoff will now say a few words.

Animal Collective will play the Grand Ballroom in NYC tonight. They will also play the even smaller Bowery Ballroom tomorrow. Those in attendance should feel lucky because Animal Collective's next scheduled NYC show after that is now May 13th at Terminal 5. All tour dates below...

Posted by anonymous | January 20, 2009 12:20 PM

Sasquatch

Please put some shoes on.

Posted by blackhat | January 20, 2009 12:35 PM

my guess is that AC will be on by 9 or so and the show will be over by 11 or so. These classier places get the show movin quickly.

On a side note anybody lsiten to that remix at the top? I did not enjoy that. Check this one out tho on my friends new myspace. Remix of "Bluish" from the new record. i like it much more then that remix of My Girls

Posted by Sean money | January 20, 2009 12:40 PM

Does it really qualify as a remix if all you do is slap a shitty techno beat on top of the original song?

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 12:50 PM

i guess this means sasquatch

CUT OFF YOUR PANTS SAY YEAH!

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 2:33 PM

For 1:58pm

...said the dingleberry with a ticket for tonite but not for tomorrow's show.

Nice try jackass. As someone with tickets for both shows, I know tonite will be great but tomorrow is going to be ridiculous. How can you even compare? Tomorrow's show is at one of the best sounding venues in the city which happens to hold about 600 people. It is going to be nuts.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 2:40 PM

I'm sure you'll be able to find one for tonight's show for $400 on craigslist or ebay.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 2:42 PM

I had a weird Animal Collective experience over the weekend.

I am/have been an unapologetic Animal Collective hater. Have never really liked anything they did. When BV posted the "my girls" tune or whatever it was last week, my reaction was "eh".

however Sunday night I was hanging out at a bar in Williamsburg (seriously) and that same song came out over the speakers and it took me a half a second to realize what it was... and I had to admit it, it sounded pretty good in a full bar and loud like that.

I still don't think the song goes anywhere, but I had a glimpse into its appeal and am willing to give the whole AC thing another shot. What's their best album? I'll pick it up and report back.

GO SEE BLUES CONTROL!

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:13 PM

"I'm sure you'll be able to find one for tonight's show for $400 on craigslist or ebay."

Wrong again. Single tickets were going for about half that and only for the Bowery show. Grand Ballroom was much less in keeping with the demand and the greater desire for Bowery.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:23 PM

get ready for a clusterfuck......anyone know what the smoking situation is like at grand ballroom? (cigs, pot, etc)

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:23 PM

AC going on right after Daft Punk...I'll trade two tickets for tickets to the secret Phish show at Market Hotel...

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:30 PM

Dude, 3:23, you don't have a ticket for either show?

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:33 PM

the donnas are opening for phish

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:37 PM

yoga - go away.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 3:37 PM

you're right, i guess, i should have known better than to post a comment that wasn't about daft punk, or "i'd hit it"... maybe i just should have said OMG THIS BLOWZZZ or something...

what the hell are you talking about?

Posted by yoga | January 20, 2009 3:53 PM

ive only seen sigur ros at grand ballroom, which was seated, and sorta tough to puff (we were last row back, so that was a real hinging factor)...that said, i dunno much about the smoking bit, but im sure, in a crowd, you could get away with it. am i wrong? i could be

what i do know is that i have a pretty sweet nug in my pocket for the show.

lookin fwd to it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 4:00 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 4:04 PM

fleet foxes wasn't seated. take a knee and let it rip

Posted by mcg | January 20, 2009 4:04 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 4:06 PM

Terminal 5 and Animal Collective. That should sound great. A bunch of thumping laptop beats and screams in that venue built like a cave. And the suburban bros spilling $8 rolling rocks on themselves while chest thumping and texting their girlfriends. Ugh.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 5:44 PM

animal collective collectively suck.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 6:13 PM

^^

yes, we know it is "hip" to not like bands that become semi-popular. thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 6:18 PM

i don't find myself hip. i just don't like them at all. their music doesn't do it for me. just all echo-y and not enough substance in my eyes.

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 6:27 PM

^
then maybe try using your ears instead

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 9:03 PM

animal collective collectively rule, thanks!!!

This place is quickly becoming an HTML embarrassment because of the cesspool of idiots around here, and douchenozzles like yourself are the reason why I am a staunch proponent of abortion! I am willing to bet my next years salary that you're a virgin and that your dick tastes like cheese. People who proclaim their drug use and sex life on the Internet generally tend to be the ones who don't even engage in those activities to begin with. Now go sign off the internet and get the fuck out of your bedroom, your parents are calling you to wash the dishes.

Show was great, no Blues Control I dont think, got in at like 9 got on a stool upstairs directly back from the stage. vic treating me lovely, lots of smoking going on from start to finish. music was great, sound coulda been better, but I had a great time.

Posted by crook from the bronx | January 20, 2009 11:41 PM

Solid show-- opened with In The Flowers and played most of MPP (everything but Also Frightened, No More Runnin, Bluish and Taste).

First third or so was a bit slow, largely due to song choice-- but nothing to complain about.

Rest of the setlist was fairly straightforward, good versions though-- Leaf House (reworked, more percussive), a meandering Fireworks.

Encore was a bit strange given the state they had whipped the crowd into by Brothersport: a drone-y older tune (I think?) and a slow, heavy Banshee Beat that was heavy on the banshee, light on the beat.

On the whole, a good show by a really great band that's pushing a really great record-- I feel like they may have some tricks up their cleeve for bowery though.

Posted by A Roach | January 21, 2009 12:10 AM

Hope they play Bluish tomorrow, that's a top track. Purple Bottle curveball too perhaps?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:23 AM

i think bluish is the best song on MPP.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:26 AM

ARoach is kinda wrong about everything... Fireworks didn't meander, it was a fairly strong version of Esslope/Fireworks that they've been doing for 18 months or so, with a lovely slowed coda and an extended guitar section. Leaf House was second.

The encore killed. After Banshee, with grogeous throbbing bass, they closed with Sippi, which cannot go without mentioning.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:29 AM

Bluish is amazing, disappointed they didn't play it. Likewise for Taste.

Blues Control were shocking, they even seemed to bore themselves. Very little blues and a staggering lack of control.

Anyone know if that girl who was carried out before they started is ok? She looked in bad shape, not helped one bit by her idiot friends who crashed her al over the place.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:42 AM

come on avey, open your eyes

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:37 AM

"Anyone know if that girl who was carried out before they started is ok?"

--

Saw her being carried out the main entrance a few minutes before the set-- looked liek she was in bad shape, but (what I assume were) her parents were there by the end. Didn't seem to be getting a lot of help from venue security though...

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 8:14 AM

animal collective used to be good...

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:43 AM

You mean you used to like them.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 11:28 AM

This is a good band. Probably the most important bands of this decade are the Walkmen and Animal Collective. I can't think of anyone else who matters as much.

Posted by Regular reader | January 22, 2009 1:30 AM

ahaha i enjoy how people get upset through comments i make up

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:51 PM

it's cool to like animal collective. the new album is really good, really. although i really just like them because everyone else does. i wonder how many people just buy their stuff and don't get it but just say they like it so they can be cool with all their little alt-friends? everybody wants to feel cool or like they're part of something that other people aren't into and yet they want them to make the billboard top 200 like that means anything. and then most people, once AC makes an album that goes to #1, won't like them anymore. meanwhile these same people dont create anything of their own. they just consume. or they try to be just like the band they like. they just suck other people's inspiration. keep sucking.

Posted by bonorman | January 23, 2009 11:45 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 11:50 AM

i dont want bands i like to hit the top 200 if it means creating shitty pop music. and animal collective sucking started with strawberry jam anyway.
