Animal Collective

Dave Portner: There have definitely been other times when we want people to understand we're just normal guys. We're not these weirdoes that a lot of people pin us down as trying to be. It's been, in that way, important for us to talk to our fans and meet people. That takes away from the mystery, I guess. But it's important to have an understanding when you feel like you're stepping over the boundaries that we've set. I think there are still certain things about our records, or the music-making process, that we really don't care for people to know. Like, certain technical things. We're not so into having photos of us taken in a studio, or anybody coming when we're working in the studio, because there's a side of it that's really personal to us and just between us. [a recent Pitchfork interview]
Animal Collective celebrated the release of their highly-acclaimed new album Merriweather Post Pavilion with a show at Grand Ballroom last night (1/20/09). It was their first of two smaller NYC shows. The second is today at Bowery Ballroom. Then they're back to play the much larger Terminal 5 in May.

Tickets for the sold out show were in demand, but the general admission room wasn't uncomfortably packed. The crowd was young. It was an early night - I was back on the street before 11PM.

After an opening set by Blues Control, Animal Collective kicked the set off with MPP's opening track "In the Flowers," and from there they played a nice mixture of songs - old and new. The crowd went nuts for "My Girls," "Brother Sport" and the now classic "Fireworks." The setlist didn't include all of MPP (no "Bluish" "Taste," "Also Frightened", or "No More Runnin"). Maybe they'll finish it off on night two. The show could have been louder, but that got better by the end, most noticeably during a a crazy version of the bass-heavy, show-closing, "Slippi". All in all I wasn't disappointed, but they left the door open for tonight to be even better.

I second that. Bring on Arcade Fire in late 2009 or early 2010. Best live shows on the planet. Loads of energy.

I went to school with Win Butler at Exeter. He didn't come to our 10 year high school reunion last Spring. Nobody had any idea he'd become an indie God. At the time he was struggling to make our crew team!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:12 AM

yeah, any am-appy t-shirts for sale?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:12 AM

It's "Slippi," not "Sippi," and they didn't play "Also Frightened," either. For Animal Collective fans, the encore of Banshee Beat and Slippi was classic. And a mention ought to be made of Noah's drumming on Fireworks. Out of control.

Is the hype on this album/band over with yet? Jesus Christ.

This avant garde / experimental rock shit is for the fucking birds. The nature of the blog scene will perpetuate this cycle of nonsensical music, for every blogger fears they might be the ones who don't "get it," and instead of calling the album for what it is they jump on the bandwagon and say it's incredible. Why? 1) Because it's easy and 2) Because Pitchfork said so with their 9-point-whatever review.

To all the bloggers out there: The whole scene is tiring. Grow a set of fucking balls and speak your mind. There's no way you all thought Lil Wayne's CD was a contender for Top 5 albums of the year. I'm sorry, but there's just no fucking way. Be a little more fearless, and separate yourselves from the pack! Tell it like it is, and readers will respect it!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:34 AM

Best album of 2008 was 'Dig Out Your Soul' by Oasis. Don't hate on that before listening. You will be rewarded. Runner up I would say is TV On The Radio's 'Dear Science' followed closely behind by Portishead's.

yo 934, you are the one reading this website. it is a lot easier to avoid a website than it is to change a radio station.

"Is the hype on this album/band over with yet? Jesus Christ."
^^ is this guy serious?

Dude, I think you MIGHT just be retarded. We're talking about a band who grew from literally nothing. A sound that has spanned from intense, harsh noise to some of the most melodic, beautiful pop songs that have EVER come out. How can you say anything negative about Animal Collective at all? Have you even listened to Merriweather yet? My freaking mother even likes it.

Also, bro, if you're so anti-blogs then why are you reading BROOKLYN FREAKING VEGAN? Further, why are you wasting MY TIME by writing your dumb opinion on a message board. If you want to bash good music, start your own blog. Maybe it could be called Gorilla VS Retard.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:50 AM

I still love this website. Also, BV is way more objective than other blogs.

I don't mind reading about bands that are hyped, what drives me nuts is the bandwagon shit. Reporting on hyped bands is what music blogs are for...It would just be nice to see one blog say, "Am I the only one who doesn't 'get it?' Anyone else think this is fucking horrible?" That's all um sayin. Again, BV is an objective site, and I respect it.

9:41 -- get your oasis out of here you blimey turd.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:56 AM

Per hype:

I think that, at this point, Animal Collective is well past "hype". Maybe around 'SUNG TONGS' or even 'FEELS' that could've been said, but A.C. has been around for YEARS and years now, and has built a group of people who legitimately love their music. They were in total obscurity for a long time before Pitchfork or anybody jumped aboard the cause of praising them, and they slowly developed fans and admirers the way it used to be done - by playing tons of shows and putting out albums that kept getting a little better.

A.C. is the total opposite of bands who get famous through the blogs overnight. They worked their asses off to get where they are, and they deserve it. They bring something really unique to music, and it's never been fashionable, or a pose. What they are doing is so special in this era, making music that is enjoyable but also truly challenging, without falling into the cynicism of a distance of so much other music (especially music from this city). I don't think "Merriweather" is their best record, but it's really good, and any positive press and sold out shows and enthusiastic listeners they get from it is excellent news.

This is a special band, and they always have been. They are so well above and past 'the scene' that bringing them into it is total nonsense.

Not loud enough? My f*ckin chest was rattling at pts.

Everywhere I looked people seemed to dancing their asses off.

Definetly not music for everyone but if it's your cup of tea the shit does not get better than this.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:19 AM

9:56, I agree with you and that was a pretty intelligent and thoughtful comment, but I have to say Pitchfork were up on them pretty early, they gave Spirit 8.9 way back when.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:20 AM

noah looks older!

:\

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:22 AM

Terminal 5? Oh great! That place sucks. Play 5 nights in a row at the Bowery, scalpers be damn!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:24 AM

Pitchfork sucks. This album is decent, but 9.6? Cmon.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:26 AM

drumming was out of control last night. room actually sounded pretty good if you stood/sat back by the soundboard. tonight is going to be pretty great though.

Posted by kp | January 21, 2009 10:29 AM

I say the album is more of a 8.1, 9.6 is taking money under the table.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:31 AM

I'm surprised they didn't give it a 10.0. Once the hype is too large, they will give their next album a 6.7, similar to what pitchfork did to ...And They Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. Loved them one moment, hated them the next. Fickle bunch.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:34 AM

what time is AC coming on stage tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:44 AM

this wasn't the best AC show i've seen, but it sure was a damn good one. here i go about to sound old (and i'm only 23), but i couldn't take all the young kids there who don't know any sort of show etiquette. there was a kid behind me that would mimic literally every single one of avey's shouts directly in my ear. it sounded terrible. thanks to -that- guy for making it a little less enjoyable.

i wish they had played bluish off the new album, but i'm not going to complain after an encore of banshee beat and slippi. slippi is absolutely amazing live. other highlights: summertime clothes (one of those songs i now really really enjoy after seeing it live), fireworks, brothersport

also, something crazy happened within the first 10 minutes of their set... three (count em!) people had a seizure or passed out within 5 feet of me. all within the first 10 minutes! remember that japanese show that would give people seizures? i guess that's what the AC light show is like. it was actually a bit scary, for a second i thought there was something in the air and it was only a matter of time before i fell. the third guy though, who was standing directly next to me, was obviously tripping on something because his pupils looked like they were the size of grapefruits.

in the end, animal collective rules. wish i was seeing them tonight at the bowery.

Posted by jack | January 21, 2009 10:46 AM

what time did AC go on stage last night?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:47 AM

Totally agree with 9:56...

This band is way beyound the period of "hype"...this is a band that has put out 9 LPs and has built a fanbase via solid albums and great live shows (same case can be made for My Morning Jacket - a band whose latest release was not loved by all but finally gave them their shot to be big - I do beleive that Merriweather Post Pavilion is Animal Collective best albums though).

This is not a "flash in the pan" blog band that sites like this build up to be the next big thing and then fall flat on their face all too the fact that they have been so overhyped before they could grow or mature. Bands need time to be good...its the bands who put together great studio albums accpompanied by great live shows which last in this game and Animal Collective have proved this.

Animal Collective does not bend their music to be more acceptable for a mainstream audience but rather pushes the envelope on their music they put out. What I love so much about this music is that you love it or hate it...I don't think their really has a middle ground. Congrats to Animal Collective for getting what seems to be their big break finally.

Not being a fan of Grand Ballroom that much I have to say that the sound was pretty damn good last night (I stood in the back towards the side). Anyhow, could not be more stoked for tonight....

bowery will be sick

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 10:56 AM

the time schedule at grand ballroom is sure to be different to the one at bowery tonight. i really wouldn't base what time they'll come on stage on last night's show. my guess is AC will go on stage at 10/10:30.

word.

Posted by jack | January 21, 2009 11:16 AM

What time does Daft Punk come on?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 11:18 AM

For some reason those first couple of audience shots make me really happy.

What does Arcade Fire have to do with any of this?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 11:26 AM

Either the bass could have come down, or all the highend turned up to match it. When the poster mentions it not being loud enough, he is talking about the non-sub content (the sub bass was beyond ridiculous). The lack of volume was readily apparent with "In the Flowers". The chorus was deprived of all it's awesomeness and what was left was an undefined rumble.

Also, though it is not true of almost every single band that reaches the stratosphere of hype, Animal Collective definitely deserve it - never more so than with this new record. It's unfortunate that the sound last night left some unconvinced of their mission.

Posted by masterp | January 21, 2009 11:29 AM

I don't even think it's a question of "getting it," as some seem to think. I get it, i loved animal collective for years. But since Feels came out, the buzzword with AC has been "accessibility," which is where they fail. This was not supposed to be an "accessible" band, the reward was in unearthing the sweetness. So, 9.6 and internet hype aside, animal collective simply hasn't been good for a while now; but seriously, all you robots in lock-step with tv on the radio, fleet foxes, animal collective, arcade fire, etc, you can keep it.

As for trail of dead's absurd 10.0 and the subsequent panning of everything they've done since, I'll defend Pitchfork a bit on this one: trail of dead fell off the fucking cliff; even if the initial 10.0 was undeserved, they fully deserved every sub-6.0 rating they got after.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 11:36 AM

"I went to school with Win Butler at Exeter. He didn't come to our 10 year high school reunion last Spring. Nobody had any idea he'd become an indie God. At the time he was struggling to make our crew team!"

HE IS AN INDIE GOD!!!

"but seriously, all you robots in lock-step with tv on the radio, fleet foxes, animal collective, arcade fire, etc, you can keep it. "

cool...if that means idiots like you will stop posting on these boards, I will keep it!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 11:42 AM

Anonymous #3924 thinks that Animal Collective wasn't "supposed" to be an accessible band! He knows what other peoples music is supposed to be. People make the music they want to make, that's all the'yre supposed to do. It either is good or it isn't, and Animal Collective happen to be getting quite a bit better with every release.

Posted by masterp | January 21, 2009 11:42 AM

"Best album of 2008 was 'Dig Out Your Soul' by Oasis."

You are one of the funniest poster on BV. Rock on dude!

how did you people get the password!!

Posted by Pedro | January 21, 2009 11:46 AM

Thank you for explaining what Animal Collective was "supposed" to be. Maybe you should enlighten the band in as well- I'm sure they could use your insight.

I don't get all this talk about MPP being an accessible pop record. A lot of it is droney and monotonous. Beautiful, but hardly ready for the radio.

daft punk is gonna be kerispy tonight! can't waitzz!

Posted by kp | January 21, 2009 11:58 AM

Can Oasis never be mentioned again on this blog>? k thx bye....see yall at the boweryy

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:01 PM

re the people passing out, etc, how appalling was the venue staff in helping people? All the security would just radio for other people to come help who in turn did nothing. It was a bad display.

On the venue front, was this place really 'smaller' than Terminal 5. It holds about 1,500.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:07 PM

this back and forth of whether or not AC is "worthy" is really getting boring. is there really nothing else noteworthy to talk about? if you don't like MPP fine - don't listen to it. if you're annoyed with pitchfork - do you really care? because pitchfork doesn't stand for a thing anymore and hasn't for a long time.

how about a little CHANGE in conversation?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:10 PM

there was a girl who passed out before the show too but I think she was just drunk.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:12 PM

"re the people passing out, etc, how appalling was the venue staff in helping people? All the security would just radio for other people to come help who in turn did nothing. It was a bad display."

-----

I AGREE!!! I was downstairs as the first girl was carried out before the show started. Two parents (probably in their 60s) were struggling to carry this girl across the lobby and out the door.

No help at all from the venue-- even as 10 security people were standing around doing nothing!

Very very poor form.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:13 PM

Here's a change to the conversation.

People are clearly paying ridiculous amounts to see AC at Bowery. They're playing T5 in the spring and I dare say most (all?) BV readers prefer Bowery to T5. I do wonder though how much more are you willing to pay to see a band at Bowery vs seeing them at T5? Double? Triple?

Posted by mp77 | January 21, 2009 12:14 PM

Blue Sky was amazing. I hope that's one of the 'My Girls' b-sides. I thought that was a real treat. Banshee killed, the encore was really special. The setlist given above doesn't mention Essplode with Fireworks, but I definitely heard bits of it in there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:15 PM

Blues Control was meh...
but that DJ was AWESOME especially with all the Obama-speech mix! i was groovin!!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:16 PM

re the girl before the show. Before she even got out of the GA room, her friends were clearly unable to take care of her, carry her, support her, etc, and the security just watched, it was really weak.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:18 PM

Tabulating and concerning yourself with internet hype is about as juvenile as it gets.

I wasn't aware there was much hype in either direction for this new AC record. I really like it. I might go see them live.

At some point the internet is going to have a sea change, but for now and for number of years its just been a haven for cynicism and miscast intellectuals declaring "the way it is."

I seriously question how much some of the people that while their time away railing against enthusiasm in any form actually really like music. It seems like they see it as one giant egocentric exercise for themselves to just expound upon.

Uh oh, Animal Collective's being talked about too much. I better set things straight!

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:27 PM

im gonna smoke so much acid before the show tonight

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:28 PM

Damn original post meh.

Did anyone else think they could have found really anyone better than Blues Control to open? It actually made me not want to stay and hear Animal Collective.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:49 PM

The hype with Animal Collective comes from ALL of their albums, not just the most recent one. They are a great band and have put out a ton of great music. The ratings are just ratings. Listen to the music before you judge. Listen to all 9 albums and however many little EPs/singles/splits are in the mix as well. Go to a show. Have your insides reassembled because of the reverb in "Banshee Beat". Then admit you were wrong when you gave them shit about the hype you think comes from just one album.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 12:51 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:03 PM

Can anyone recommend me bands that sound like ANIMAL COLLECTIVE?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:07 PM

Hey... Questions for ALL who have commented......

Do any of you wear earplugs? Cuz most people who complain about either high or low end getting to unbearable at an acoustically sound venue are experiencing partial hearing loss in one of these frequencies....

If you put earplugs in... not the sponge crap, but rather the nice conical musician pairs that cut the volume and not the frequencies, you will see a marked difference in quality...

I plan on wearing them tonight, and enjoying the show.....

Maybe BV should do a story emphasizing the need for protection at shows like this or else 60% of our generation will be deaf by the age of 40.

Posted by jason | January 21, 2009 1:24 PM

Thought I'd just add that Blues Control has to be the worst band I've ever seen live. Just terrible. Worse than Amazing Baby.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:26 PM

HERE WE GO MAGIC is pretty good hipster garabe

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:38 PM

Geez, Blues Control must be up for the worst set I've ever experienced in my life. The music the DJ was playing as we waited was way more interesting.

AC had a pretty good show, and the sound I believe was fine. I was right by the barrier and the bass was shaking me up!

I thought Fireworks was the best in the set, or maybe I just miss the real drums in their music. My Girls, Brothersport and Slippi were other highlights to me.

Posted by dee | January 21, 2009 1:42 PM

Guy's Eyes sounded better than on the album. And Daily Routine was HUGE. Not a fan of the bass towards the end of the show, but I guess I felt it more for being close to the stage.

Posted by Eduardo | January 21, 2009 1:53 PM

Does anyone know if there is a proper review up online of the show yet?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 1:59 PM

The transisition from Fireworks (which did start with part of Essplode) > My Girls was the peak for me.

Think Fireworks alone clocked in at 15 min.

As to the person with the earplugs comment, could not agree more. About 2 yrs ago got a custom pair made and it was the best $125 I have spent.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 2:07 PM

i have 1 ticket to sell...$300....but its dipped in acid. any takers?

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 2:13 PM

i gave my animal collective ticket away to see vivian girls, pissed jeans and fucked up.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 2:18 PM

Not sure what you're talking about with the sound. gorilla v. bear just posted some mp3s from last night and it sounds amazing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 2:27 PM

Leaf House was the highlight for me... the beat was so hypnotic.

I went sans-plugs and it was amazing. Banshee Beat was the most intense, the bass rattled all of me, but my hearing is still intact... not a lot of high end noise to bother with my eardrums. I felt it more in the pit of my stomach. I was right up front and center, against the barricade.

Posted by RC | January 21, 2009 2:27 PM

anon 2:17pm, psst, those bands are hipster bands.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 2:38 PM

i love them. and that was a very good show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 7:59 PM

LOl i love how people just try to justify how much this band sucks or rules. If you think they suck then why even post. are u jealous that they have people who like their music? just because more people are being exposed to them has nothing to do with the band or how good they are. It's like almost any band, you either like it or you dont. If you didnt go to the show or dont have somethin new to say then just post on somethin where u do have somethin to say. Everyone knows that this album is getting hyped. Some think it is deserved some dont. Like Katt williams said "You need haters" cuz thats when you know you doin somethin right. when people have to spend their time hatin on you so much

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 8:50 PM

show was fuckin sick. I loved the transitions and the updated Leaf House sooo much. I'm jealous of the show tonight.

check out a dope Remix of "Bluish" off the new album. I kinda like it better then the album version.

Comfy in Nautica

Comfy would have been nice at Grand Ballroom, but you suckers missed out with no Daily Routine. And no Banshee, unless that's what ?? was...

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:10 AM

bowery show was one of the best i've seen them play in a long time. COBRALEGS forever!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:25 AM

Nice for Also Frightened.

Posted by Eduardo | January 22, 2009 2:04 AM

?????? song was a reworked version of Winter's Love and it was great

Oh and to 1:10am-amazing it did not take long for an idiot to make a comment like that.
I was at both shows and i can tell you without a doubt Grand Ballroom could not hold a candle to tonite. Sorry but it happens to be true.

Let the haters who could not get a ticket to Bowery commence their stupidity.

Posted by nerd | January 22, 2009 2:08 AM

na it definitely wasn't banshee, i wish it had been. i was a little disappointed in the set list, thought they would've brought out some surprises, a feels-era track or two, and maybe chores or reverend green or something. leaf house and slippi were ill though. and from the new album, no in the flowers, bluish or daily routine?! come on. lion in a coma and also frightened are decent but not cream of the crop. I actually liked comfy in nautica to close, but we've seen them play that before all last year so i would've liked something different. i guess they wanted to vary the set list, but I'd've loved banshee. the songs they did play were great, though the crowd could have been moving a bit more. the light show was sick.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:16 AM

what's up with my girls? maybe i'm spoiled by the studio version, but it doesn't even sound like the same song and comes off as hollow. i don't remember the old boots even sounding like this.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:18 AM

Let the over-reactions to everything commence.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:25 AM

2:16 - Banshee was really sick the other night, as I'm sure you've heard from the bootleg. 2:08 is lucky to have had both nights and isn't totally putting it all in perspective. I would love to have heard Winter's Love at Grand B, and I'm definitely getting the feeling that they're in a phase of keeping the old stuff scarce in the set. I mean, with the bigger tour coming up and the break through album, it's going to be unlikely we'll be hearing Banshee, Winter's in the same set with other oldies reworked. Still, Leaf House was a treat, and they played Chocolate Girl in London this month, so at least that stuff's still out there. It's just feels all aimed at the newer fans a bit.

As for the My Girls live... that's how it's always been live and all it's missing is that one bit beat, which is a little too obvious in a way. It's the one time on record that Panda (in the group or solo) has really given into using a heavy beat like that (Bros live has a beat that's removed on record) and I guess he likes keeping it's subtlety somewhere. I thought it sounded nice, and I'm kinda glad it wasn't ruining by people lossing it to it...

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:21 AM

i'd like these guys if their lead singer wasnt such a tool

What happened to the humble days of Campfire songs Follow follow Fuck! the suck now

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 8:08 AM

Bowery was SICK! Didn't know too much of their music prior, but I'm convinced now....AC are the real deal. Quality sounds and true professionals. Their songs have the uncanny ability to transport you into memories of good ol' times! At least for me.

....and the ticketless line trying to get in was the longest I've seen it - ever.

Bravo!

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:01 AM

There was some bad shit going down with counterfeit tickets at the Bowery show. As I was going in some people got stopped when the guy scanned their tickets. He asked them if they'd bought them from a guy (he said his name, but I can't remember what it was) on Craigslist for $100 (!) and they said yes. He said they were the tenth people that night who'd got caught in the same scam. So someone out there made a LOT of money from last night's show.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:17 AM

LOL, the dude who's going on about how AC were "supposed" to be accessible is prolly the same fuck from that other thread a while back spouting the same shit going "THE DIFFERENCE IS CLEAR." I don't think a lot of you understand that internet or not, the buzz around AC is sooooooo fucking tiny compared with a bajillion other artists in America. some of you really do live in a bubble.

I happen to like Blues Control, but then again I like a lot of shit like that. I think AC will be perfect for exposing their "crossover" audience to bit more far-out shit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:29 AM

Yeah, I unfortunately bought them. The name on the ticket was Seth Scoblionko. By the time I got there they said it was over 20 people who got turned away

I'm not as mad about my money (well I really am) but the fact that the band didn't get any of it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:35 AM

I heard about that ticket scam, sucks for those people, but I do question who thinks buying a scalped e-ticket is a good idea in the first place.

Who was the opener last night? I didn't catch her name but she was absolutely terrible.

Posted by mp77 | January 22, 2009 9:36 AM

learned my lesson - despite the fact that I've had good success with craigslist before

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:46 AM

Opening singer was absolutely painful. Snyth sounds with repeateed, echoed lyrics of "I'm soooo sorry" with crying baby samples. I'm thinking she has abortion regret issues.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 9:46 AM

Show was great but wasn't nearly loud enough.

Only downside of the evening was that they didn't play purple bottle.

That sucks about that scam - any way we find out this guy and fuck him up?

Comfy In Nautica at the end was an amazing surprise. Gorgeous.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 11:12 AM

comfy in nautica was damn cool.

dear god though that opening act needed to be put out of her misery. that baby sound effect was probably the worst thing ever.

dj in between sets was pretty great also.

Posted by kp | January 22, 2009 11:22 AM

Seriously the baby crying sample could have been interesting for an intro to a song....maybe but to use it throughout a song that was over 5 minutes was torture.

I hope that people pursue some sort of criminal action against the scammer. It's remarkable that he tried to pull off something effecting as many people as he did and allowed his email & phone number to get out there.

Posted by mp77 | January 22, 2009 11:27 AM

people who didn't like the opener prob didn't like animal collective until about a month ago

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 11:33 AM

Opening act was pure crap. (crying baby sample for like 10 minutes?? izawack!)

AC was sick!

Crowd was lively.

Smoking was quasi allowed...and appreciated.

Great show overall!

I cannot believe this Seth dude is stupid enough to actually pull this scam and think he could get away with it. In all probability this could land him in jail, I bet Police have already questioned him.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:41 PM

one of his co workers might be responsible, if you leave your ticket lying around after you print it. or if you dl it to your computer. any number of ways this could happen, if you think about it...

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:43 PM

I agree with whoever made the point that Seth sold that ticket to someone, and then that someone perpetrated the scam. I think seth is an IDIOT for selling a ticketfast ticket, but I highly doubt he's the scammer.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:44 PM

yeah, but you see ticketfast tickets re-sold all the time, even on that ticketmaster auction thing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:47 PM

Has anyone filed a police report yet?

A buddy of mine got scammed by this guy & has had no luck reaching him. He tried calling both offices where he used to work, but this kid no longer works at either place.

Does anyone know if the Bowery has a list of everyone that this guy scammed?

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:00 PM

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/tix/1002858884.html

Go here and email me from Craigslist. I've gotten a ton of emails and will forward on to AC Management, who I've got in contact with and Bowery Ballroom if they respond too.

I'm not going after my lost money per se, see it as a lesson learned but would like to see the band and promoter go after this guy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:05 PM

4:05: You have to call the police, call the precint where Bowery is located I dont know which number it is, most likely its already being investigated. You will probably have to go down there and file a police report.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 5:18 PM

Seth happens to be a very good friend of mine and I can tell you definitively that he was not the one who sold all of you the fake tickets.

He sold 1 pair of tickets on Craigslist to a third party. That person must have photocopied and sold all of the copies to you guys. Can any of you confirm that you did indeed have email or face to face contact with Seth? If not, then you should probably stop slandering the kid and go after the asshole who actually sold you the fakes.

Now, did he do something dumb by selling someone print at homes that could easily be photocopied? Probably. Does he deserve to be slandered by having his email and cell posted on the internet? Definitely not. (and btw, thats his former place of employment, but ya'll can feel free to harass them, he doesn't work there)

Anyone who actually purchased these tickets want to confirm what email address they were conversing w/ to make the transaction?

Posted by Adam | January 22, 2009 5:40 PM

animal collective here comes the indian

Posted by thugz mansion | January 22, 2009 5:42 PM

I agree, Seth didn't do this. The people who got burned by the scam should group together and piece the information they have on the person who sold them the tickets to track down the actual crook!

Posted by Steve | January 22, 2009 5:44 PM

hahaa. seth was most definitely peddling these tickets. dude tried to sell a pair to me, some other kid on last.fm, and my friend at the same time. sorry buddy, there was a two ticket limit for this order. doesnt add up. seth is gettin harassed for the next year til i get bored. FUCK scammers

Posted by moop | January 22, 2009 5:50 PM

I am one of the people who got scammed.

I got there early and there were about ten scalpers roving the north side of 34th street between 8th and 9th aves saying "tickets, tickets."

I watched them for a while. It was a bona fide ponzi scheme. They are all working together to scam you.

They were frustrated with the market for a while, talked a lot about going back up to the Roseland. It's an organized activity. I guess you can call it a GANG.

This is basically how the scam went down:

If you ask them: "How much?" they will say: "How many do you need?" You tell them how many, and he grabs his phone and says: "I'm calling my broker."

Duh: There is no broker. There's a dude at a Kinko's or some place with a xerox machine, and they are making pretty decent copies of original tickets they probably bought from someone earlier in the night.

You say to them: "How do I know they are real?" and he will offer you a ticket for one of your friends to go in and call you when it works. You do not have to pay for that first ticket. As your friend goes in, he says you have to walk away from the venue with him, like you're doing something suspicious. But at the same time, the fact that he just handed over a ticket seems very trustworthy. He might make conversation with you. Your friend calls you and says they are real, and then you make the deal.

Now here is the key: The suspicious vibe you get from walking down the street comes into effect when he hands you the tickets, and when you try to look at them to see if they are real, he says: "Dude, not right here, put them away, don't let anyone see the exchange we just made." You're nervous so you just turn around and walk away. You feel the texture of the paper in your hands and it feels smooth like a real ticket. But then when you look at it, you realize there's no crease where there should be a crease and then you realize what's just gone down. By then the guy is long gone.

The lesson is: Because there are some good stories and some bad stories out there from buying tickets from a scalper, people continue to give them a chance. But you really should not. It's always a gamble. Sometimes you win but most of the time you're just going to lose. So steer clear of these assholes.

Posted by alex | January 22, 2009 6:31 PM

alex - wtf are you talking about. People are talking about being scammed at Bowery not Grand Ballroom.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 6:51 PM

Moop, how the hell do you know it was "Definitely Seth"? Post us some proof or shut the fuck up and stop being an asshole.

Posted by Adam | January 22, 2009 9:31 PM

hahaha cause the douchebag was trying to sell me via craigslist back in december (scobes14@gmail.com). when i questioned his operation, he flipped a shit and snapped at me, saying "others would get the tickets." oh yeah, he also said he had 4 pairs. also said it was an eticket only release and that no hard tickets were available. you know, for a upenn grad, he sure is a total fucking dumbass.

Posted by moop | January 22, 2009 9:45 PM

So you tried to buy tickets from him, had a disagreement and never actually purchased tickets? Hmm sounds like you've got no fucking proof! So shut the fuck up douche.

Looks like we're back at square one waiting for one person who got denied w/ a ticket with Seth's name on it to show proof that they got that ticket from Seth.

"Questioned his operation" you mean... buying a few tickets on Ticketmaster and then selling them on craigslist? Wow, real criminal operation there bro. Sounds like you've got a RICO case on your hands! Call the FBI!!!

Shut the fuck up Moop. Seth screwed up by selling a easily copyable ticket on craistlist, but he didn't scam anyone.

Posted by Adam | January 22, 2009 9:58 PM

I tried posting this earlier twice but it never went through... Im going to try and posting it in sections now

This is Seth Scoblionko... I have no idea what happened to all of you and I'm sorry that somehow me selling my ticket on craigslist facilitaed all of this. This is all that I know:

On December 6th I posted on craigslist that I am selling 2 ticket to the Animal Collective Show at the Bowery Ballroom. I was able to get 2 pairs of tickets via ticketmaster, order numbers 50-39466/NY1 and 50-38362/NY1. And then decided that I did not want to go.
One pair of ticekts was sold to a Ms. Beth Coupe and the payment was made via paypal. She received her tickets in the mail and had no problem.
The other ticket was sold to someone in person. I do not have his (yes it was a man) name only that his email is arch326@yahoo.com. Unfortunately I did not save his email after I met up with him and have no record of it since Gchat does not keep records for longer than 30 days. I have tried emailing this person numerous times but all efforts have been bounced back.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 10:02 PM

When both pairs of tickets were exchanged they were valid tickets. I am sorry that someone used my tickets to copy and resell them but this is not my fault. That is all the information I have and I am sorry taht all of this happened. However, I have friends who did not get in as well and was talking to one person earlier today and this is what she said:

me: how did you get the ticket
her: outside the venue
i think there were a lot of diff scams going on
there was a guy near me that got scammed with a hard ticket

It seems that many people got scammed last night and I am sorry but I have nothing to do with this and am sorry some of you did not get into the show but I don't know what to tell you since it wasn't me.

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 10:03 PM

^ Now that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up Seth. I really hope they can take down some of this bashing of your name, no one wants top Google searches defaming their character like this.

i still dont understand why no one called the police once the scam became obvious (all these 10s of people outside Bowery with fake tickets). you guys who got ripped off should have called 911 the night of the show outside the Bowery and let the chips fall down as they may. that being said, not too late to go down to the precinct and file a police report.

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 1:03 AM

you assholes will never find me!

Posted by SETH SCOBLIONKO | January 23, 2009 1:28 AM

"What does the above even mean? It looks like you just kind of pissed off the guy selling you your tickets and he decided not to sell them to you... this really doesn't say anything???"

"hahha it proves his stories are inconsistent you fucking tool"

Ben gets it, Moop remains retarded.

Inconstant, sure maybe. But you still have yet to prove that a single person who got denied entry with a ticket with Seth's name on it actually purchased the item from Seth.

Moop, KYS.

oh my god did one of you kids give my freind a bad hit?! she was okay when we met up but after she got high with y'all she went beserker. she was on a paranoia stalking rampage. what did y'all do to her? she kept blacking out and when i sat her down she kept crossing her eyes and loosing it? scary stuff. i learned my lesson. never give a covetted ticket to a friend who just likes the scene but doesn't trully care about hearing the music and rather get high and stalk boys

You had cute bangs and funky glasses. I printed ten copies of my Animal Collective ticket and sold you one near the Lorimer stop. Maybe we can go to our next show together?

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 1:10 PM

I was tripping on three Hits of Lsd.in the grand ballroom so fuck all of you guys that were smoking weed. specially those annoying little faggots in front of me. hahaha.

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 2:16 PM

I know for a fact that it WAS Seth that scammed everyone.

I met him in person, had phone contact with him (his real cell phone number), and saw his picture on facebook beforehand so that I knew it was him.

he also forwarded me the Ticketmaster receipt for the 2 tickets he bought with the intention of printing 30+ copies and making a quick grand or two.

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 3:44 PM

I agree completely witht the person above me.

I too was sold one of the tickets, and also met the kid and am positive that Seth is the one who was scamming. His email address, when entered into facebook, is deinitely his.

here's his phone number too, or atleast the phone number of the fake ticket saleman: 6147388301

dont expect an answer.

Posted by Jake | January 23, 2009 7:02 PM

Maybe if you collective animals collected your thoughts and realized that if you collected together and went after the animal collective ticket collectors at the time they were collectively collecting your money, you could have collectively busted this collection of animal collective money collectors!

Posted by Fan | January 23, 2009 7:28 PM

fuck it. i'm gonna get arrested probably. if you got scammed please email me and i will get you your money back. please don't call the cops, please.

ticket refunds to those who were scammed will be issued at ticketmaster

Posted by dude from craigslist | January 24, 2009 1:33 PM

since economy is getting worse and worse, i expect this scam will become much more common.

I doubt though ticketmaster will issue any refunds since they say buying resold tickets you do it at your own risk.

hopefully everyone who got scammed gets their money back.

was that really the scammer who said "please don't call the cops, please"?

Posted by Anonymous | January 24, 2009 9:16 PM

Me and my friend also got scammed by Seth. We both met him in person near city hall battery park. It was def him selling the tickets. I checked his FaceBook account after i bought the tickets(to check if it was really him) and his picture matched up with what he looked like when i met up with him.

For the people who say it was not seth but someone else reselling his tickets is WRONG!! I meet up with him in person and HE WAS the one who sold us the tickets. I would also like to see this guy arrested or get a refund on my ticket.

I am the aforementioned friend; we got scammed by that douche Seth back in early December. He told us some weird story about how he bought 4 sets of tickets with his girlfriend's credit card, which was strange because it was the first thing he told us; we didn't even ask. Looking back he seemed odd overall, but he also seemed like a nice and legit guy. That douche wasted my time, cost me 50 bucks and a shitload of sleep, and left me pissed. We will have our revenge.

Posted by bob | January 24, 2009 11:46 PM

Seth for President!!!

If you're dumb enough to get scammed you deserve to lose all your money.

Posted by Realist | January 25, 2009 12:14 AM

The Arcade Fire is well and good, but eventually will run out of Pac-Man consoles to melt down. I'll be happy when all of you are left with a shattered mess the way Interpol shat on ya's with "Our Love To Admire"

Or even the Strokes last album.

Bottom line, if you remain so single minded about a group, the disappointment will be 'hang yourself with mommy's bra-strap' immense. Stick to groups like Sigur Ros, who will continue doing the same, damn great thing they always do.

Posted by The Socialite | January 25, 2009 1:10 AM

"i'm right"

"no, I'M right"

"no you're both wrong"

"uh uh, i'm right"

ad infinitum...

remember the scene from ghost world when those nerdy guys were standing around arguing about old 78s and stuff? forget about arguing and just go listen to whatever you like and be at peace with that and with whatever else other people think is the next best thing.

i mean because contrary to what you all believe the best band ever is not AC, arcade fire, sigur ros or interpol.

it's kiss.

and whoever got scammed should get their cash back. the unfortunate thing is that not ALL of the people who got scammed are going to get their cash back, only the people who access this site and possibly pitchfork (who linked to this entry because of it) and get the information.

in other words, get your cash back, call the cops, find him on facebook and tell his family members too what kind of guy is in their midst. cause there's a good number of them there.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2009 9:30 AM

FIGHT SCIENTOLOGY

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2009 9:42 AM

Anon @ 9:30 - Kiss almost had me believing that at one point, but as you watch more and more of their more recent footage, you start to see through it all to just what a scam their whole shtick was. They're hilarious, but they actually kinda suck. The REAL greatest band of all time is obviously the David Lee Roth and Microsoft Soundsmith side project.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2009 10:25 AM

it's songsmith, dog

Posted by songmith wizard | January 25, 2009 11:03 AM

yeah, i know it was a shtick. saying kiss was the best ever was a joke, well sort of. i owned destroyer on vinyl when i was 5 years old, so i mean i CARED about them.

anyway, yeah i know: they were businessmen through and through, oh well. though i did see gene simmons at the waldorf astoria a couple months back though. of all my nyc celebrity sightings, that was the only one i thought was moderately cool.

all that being said, the new AC is actually good. i was ready for it to be over-hyped, but dang if it ain't good.

any official word on the seth scammer incident?

Posted by anon @ 930 | January 25, 2009 3:40 PM

I just got an email from him saying that he didn't do it and he made up some BS story about selling to only two people some girl and some old guy. And his excuse for why we get his profile and picture everytime we search facebook and other online trackers is: "As for the accusation that my email and facebook or whatever matches the person you got them from: I don't know what to tell you: its not me"

The sad thing is that I met up with him and got them face to face so I KNOW it was him. I even told him that I'd call it even if i got a refund but no luck. Everyone who met up with him face to face please email me with your name and number at bluevivi3350@yahoo.com. I plan to go file a police report soon and i would like to have a row of witnesses lined up when Seth tries to make up some BS to the cops. I can also forward you the emails he sent me.

Posted by John | January 25, 2009 3:59 PM

Oh yeah. "Songsmith." I knew that. My bad.

Posted by Anonymous | January 25, 2009 4:00 PM

no but seriously, keep us informed. i'm interested to see how this all plays out.

good luck getting your cash back everyone.

maybe message pitchfork with a centralized email address to get the word out to the other people who got scammed who don't read this weblog? some other places too maybe?

It's great this kid's name is Seth.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2009 1:19 AM

hahahaha what a fucking scared puss.

he's been sending all these emails around to people he scammed trying to explain his way out of his...

e.g., "I bought two pairs of tickets and sold one to this lady in PA and one to this guy who met me where I work, that guy must have copied them and sold them to everyone else" blah blah blah blah

he's also obviously the one who has been posting similar stories on this bulletin board.

what a fucking dipshit.

i met him in person. i know it was him. we have mutual acquaintances.

i also know of at least 5 other people that met him in person and can verify that it was him behind this whole stupid "plan" (i.e. printing a bunch of tickets that he bought, thinking no one would notice).

this kid is going to jail, and i can't WAIT!

haaaaaa Seth Scoblionko, you FUCKING moron.

it's really absurd to think that someone would pull such a mindless scheme, but it's true: Seth Scoblionko is a sorry excuse for a criminal.

This guy is a shithouse criminal. Like 10 shithouses. He didn't cover his tracks at all.

maybe he was hoping they wouldnt have scanners or they would be broken. Now he's in a world of shit.

Posted by Anonymous | January 26, 2009 9:50 AM

I also bought tickets from him in person in Tribeca and would say his facebook picture is definitely the same person. He told me he bought them for his girlfriend but she was going to be out of town the night of the show, and he didn't like the band so he was getting rid of them. I think he misunderestimated the situation. I can't imagine how he thought he'd get away with it.

Posted by lucas | January 26, 2009 1:11 PM

is everyone getting centralized?

what about the guy above who mentioned his email address? anyone file a report yet?

Posted by 930 | January 26, 2009 1:33 PM

he looks like he'll be very popular in the slammer

Posted by gravy | January 26, 2009 2:10 PM

lol he looks like a major douche in those myspace pics.

Posted by shabooty | January 27, 2009 5:59 AM

Seth had the right idea, but he's obviously not devious enough to use a stolen credit card and an out of town middle man with a pre paid cell phone (bought with the stolen credit card). Using this new paradigm I'm going to rip you guys off for the Beiruit and Cat Power shows. If that goes well I'll break the bank on Morrissey. Don't worry, the middle man is going to be some douche-y looking white frat boy from Massachusettes, so you'll feel like you can trust him, while condescending him, while we're ripping you off. That way you don't walk away empty handed. We'll even hire BBDO to create a viral ad campaign with a faux myspace profile that will have exclusive pictures and video of the show you missed. Then you'll be able to register for a free t shirt that will say something like, "I paid a hundred bucks to see a medicore band and all i got was this lousey T shirt" or something like that. They're the ad guys, they'll come up with something snappy and ironic and graphic. So don't forget to NOT buy tickets in advance and have too much trust strangers because after all, they know how to use the internet.

Posted by Barry | January 27, 2009 12:44 PM

the scam is so simple and beautiful its a wonder it wasnt done on a massive scale before. I wonder if anyone is gonna get scammed with the Metallica shows over the weekend.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:56 PM

Re. Barry @ 12:44, How come there hasn't been an all-girl band from Boston yet called the "Massachusettes?"

THIS IS FOR YOU SETH guy.

I'll thrill you; I'll kill you; cut your heart out
Then I'll dismember your body parts
I'll break in your house late at night
My smiling face is your final sight
I'll cut your throat with a razor blade
And leave you in a shallow grave
I'll pound your face against the fuckin' street
You'll love my work; It'll be complete
I'll strip you and rip you; your death is my game
I love my work and I have no shame

I'll cave in your head, Your face I'll distort
Then you'll end up as a missing report
I'll smash your skull with a two-by-four
Till your brains are on the floor !!!

step 1: buy a ticket from a kid
step 2: copy, sell on street
step 3: go online on hipster forum and blame kid
step 4: continue the pile-on until everyone thinks it's the kid
step 5: profit!!!
