Animal Collective @ Bowery Ballroom (a few pics & setlist)

Based on seeing them a few times before, I've always been on the side of "Animal Collective sucks live". After giving them another chance at Bowery Ballroom last night (1/21), I am now officially a convert. Animal Collective DID NOT suck live, as Big Perm agreed with (above), and as Nick expressed about the show they played at Grand Ballroom farther uptown one night earlier.Opening act was pure crap. (crying baby sample for like 10 minutes?? izawack!)
AC was sick!
Crowd was lively.
Smoking was quasi allowed...and appreciated.
Great show overall! [Big Perm]
I agree with my friend who said they could have played longer, and with my friend who said they could have played more energetic songs in the encore because the crowd was ready and full of energy, but I also have no complaints and the encore may have been my favorite part. The harmonizing during the reworked version of Winter's Love which went right into the show-closing Panda Bear track Comfy in Nautica, all being performed loud over the great Bowery sound system was just so good. Full setlist below...

I saw a guy with microphones up in the balcony, so we may see another boot for this one.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:22 PM
All in all, not that great. The DJ between sets played better music. That opening act was a total joke - someone should have pulled the plug on her.

AC is hype-proof
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:29 PM
that is a good loooking bunnysuit!
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:30 PM
Can't believe the good reviews for the show. AC sucked both time I have seen them live, but maybe I should give them another shot. Too bad, the next show is at T5. Hopefully they will play another NYC show after that at a better venue.

I hate to crap on an artist, but just wasn't feeing the constant crying baby samples in the opening act.
Posted by Big Perm | January 22, 2009 1:46 PM
Nick Zinner was there also, grooving out
their new album is feedback heaven
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:47 PM
ac was good but not great at bowery, better performance and sound at grand ballroom. and way to change up the set list from night to night

"bunny suits are the new beards"
change you can believe in!

Animal Collective DID NOT suck live, as Big Perm pointed out above...
-Do you know how to understand things that are coming out of Big Perm's mouth? Learn slang: sick = good

"ac was good but not great at bowery, better performance and sound at grand ballroom. and way to change up the set list from night to night"
....if you cannot hear the fact that the sound is 100x better at bowery, you shoulw have your ears cut off
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:49 PM
sound wasn't too loud, mixed perfect
balcony had the best sound, no ear plugs needed :)
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:51 PM
No "In the Flowers" was a bit ridiculous.

incredible night--- air was thick with pot smoke--- light show was great, encore was killer. AC is on top of their game---- anyone who was there was very lucky--- anyone hating wishes they were there.

1:49 - BV understands Big Perm perfectly.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:55 PM
to the first 1:49,
bv was saying that big perm pointed out that animal collective DO NOT suck live. so i think he understood the slang quite well
I thought I saw Nick Zinner, so I guess I did. And I definitely saw Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear, because he is an otherworldly presence.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:55 PM
last night was stellar. only thing that would have made it better is if they played purple bottle.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:56 PM
I think Haley Joel Osment was there.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:57 PM
The drummer from Blonde Redhead was there as well.
Posted by jason! | January 22, 2009 1:57 PM
why wasn't my earlier comment posted? I wrote that I had bootlegged the show and the songs were going to be available on my blog tonight... hrm. weird.

im pretty sure i saw jesus and the guy who played tom hanks when he was a kid in BIG doing lines in mens room. star studded evening indeed.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 1:59 PM
after seeing AC for the first time last night, i can now say it was well worth holding out & skipping all those webster hall shows in the past 5 years. also, it should really be mentioned that the crowd was fantastic. i'll will be sure to see them on their tour in the spring, but will certainly avoid T5 at all costs.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:01 PM
That was me alright!

to the girl who hideously yelped the lyrics of MY GIRLS into my ear, thus ruining an already tepid performance of my favorite MPP track - you were cute, but i wanted to shiv you in the kidney anyway.

New to New York I guess.... what's wrong with Terminal 5. I missed the show and was hoping to catch it in May, now I'm having second thoughts.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:36 PM
terminal 5 = clusterfuck and the stage is in an awkward place..its not intimate like bowery and the sounds arnt as good
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:38 PM
Panda Bear's drums on Fireworks were incredible.
There was some dude yelling toward the back of the floor between the set and the encore: "Haley Joel Osmont is here!! He's right here! Look! It's Haley Joel Osmont!!"
It was pretty damn funny.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:39 PM
t-5 gets a bad rap...place isn't perfect but i've seen some fun things there. crowd can sometimes suck but that is your fault for having lame friends
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:39 PM
thank god everyone near me seemed pretty mesmerized by the performance so i didn't have to deal with any falsetto, great crowd. i'm also glad that this show was so good that now i don't have to risk ruining my animal collective experience by seeing them at terminal 5.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:41 PM
Great set last night. Best I've seen so far. Better than seaport, Webster, APW. Lights were a nice touch. Sound was perfect. Crowd was eating it up, very lively and attentive. Brothersport is their Rebellion/Lies.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 2:42 PM
I heard a rumor that Tom Yaps was rushed to the hospital last night in an ambulance?!?
can anyone confirm or deny? I know his ESPN X-Games interview at 2pm was apparently postponed?
Posted by karl denson | January 22, 2009 2:43 PM
The sound was overall as good as it's gonna get for a band with this much layering. Bowery is absolutely the best sounding venue. y'know, besides Carnegie Hall.
Yeah, I was standing next to Nick Zinner about 20 feet from the stage for the whole night and didn't realize it was him until I came on this board and made the connection. I knew he looked familiar. Also, this music business exec asshole behind me was pushing people around. But it's okay, I heard him say AC was "better than he expected." He's definitely an avid fan.
I'm dying to see them again, but at t5? what to do, what to do...
Posted by Anon | January 22, 2009 2:48 PM

what happened to tom yaps' finger? there was blood everywhere!
Posted by Erik Newson | January 22, 2009 2:50 PM
tom yaps cut his finger on my razor blade, which was used to wolf down a shit load of lines. I patched his cut up with a band aid, which turned out to be acid. This caused his heart to explode. grease was everywhere.

HOW WAS COMFY IN NAUTICA?
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:09 PM
i don't know what's more scary to a hipster, sounds of a baby crying or a career. It was like being stuck sitting next too a newborn on a flight headed for the hudson river. But she wasn't bad. The d.j. between sets was better, any one know who it was???
And the crowd was filled with a lot of college kids that's why it was moving or else it would be just one guy going crazy and the rest of us nodding our heads.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:10 PM
"There was some dude yelling toward the back of the floor between the set and the encore: "Haley Joel Osmont is here!! He's right here! Look! It's Haley Joel Osmont!!"
It was pretty damn funny."
why is that funny? who gives a fuck if he was there? i thought it was pretty damn obnoxious, and stupid, and came at a time during the encore when the focus should have been on the band and the music, not some drunk frat boy douche bag screaming like an asshole.
also, the crowd sucked. for a crowd that was supposedly mainly composed of AC fanclubbers, it was a pretty weak display. the people around me didn't even know the song titles. i was seriously waiting for whitney from the hills to show up.
still, great show.

Comfy in Nautica was beautiful beautiful beautiful.

seriously?? where on earth were you standing?
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:23 PM
oh man the people around you didn't know the song titles? maybe you should pay more attention to the band and less attention to people having a good time, faggot.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:30 PM
I think Tom Yaps wrote me.
Posted by Comfy in Nautica | January 22, 2009 3:33 PM
anon 3:30- I agree that your enjoyment of a concert shouldn't have anything to do with whether or not people know song titles, and I had a great time last night, but knock it off with the homophobia already! What the fuck?
Posted by gay fan | January 22, 2009 3:34 PM
merriweather post pavilion is simply incredible. each time i listen to it, i hear new things. a classic. and many AC fans may hate on me, but I think it's their best work yet.
Posted by nycmusique | January 22, 2009 3:37 PM
^^^^^ doesn't know the song titles
i guess these days a good time at a concert involves not paying attention to the show or knowing anything about the music and just standing around being loud and obnoxious and trying to look pretty...i assume since the comment touched such a nerve, this is pretty much what you were doing there, faggot/fratboy.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:38 PM
^^^^ was comment 69 heh.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:43 PM
^^^^ yep, pretty much that, exactly
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:43 PM
Yo 3:16, you're angry man. Take it easy. I don't know if Haley was really in the house or not, and who cares, but the guy who was yelling about it was funny and the encore hadn't started yet so relaaaaaax homes.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 3:53 PM
this could be the last time i ever post to this blog
Posted by tom yaps | January 22, 2009 3:58 PM
I think concerts are about enjoying music and not concerning yourself with the worthiness of those around you. People were at least moving, which made me happy. If they were talking loudly over the music, that is lame. But not nearly as lame as you deployment of the word "faggot", which is really fucked up.
And not that it makes a goddamn bit of difference, but I knew every song except for the new one.
Posted by gay fan | January 22, 2009 3:58 PM
Oh wait, BOTH of you anonymous asshats are calling each other faggot?! Maybe the crowd DID suck...

scoblionko's definitely the scammer. dude claimed to have 3 seperate pairs of tickets because he "used 3 different credit cards." then claimed there were no hard tickets, that it was an eticket only release. when i questioned him, he flipped out and said hes selling them to someone else. good thing i didnt believe him.
dude is a fuckwad. everyone leave mad messages on his machine. this guy needs to know not to fuck with the fans of animal collective.

The crowd was great because people weren't TALKING THE WHOLE FUCKING TIME like they do at most shows. It was a special night at the Bowery. I'm gonna try to get my whole 16-minute video of Fireworks on Youtube if the file size isn't too big - will link here.

animal collective REALLY SUCKEd- what a crappy and boring show- seriously. waaayy overrated.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:45 PM
set was kinda short, but still, best show i'd seen from them since seaport. still not better than seaport, atleast for me, wasn't as intense. winter's love was amazing, so was slippi. that new blue sky song sounded pretty good to.
as far as the opener goes, don't be so quick to bash her. she's much better in rings, plus she seemed pretty nervous.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:50 PM
i would rather see noah's brother than aveys sister
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:57 PM
Awesome show! Not the best AC show I have been to but definitely up there. Slippi was the highlight of the night for me and my only disappointment was that they did not play Banshee Beat.
Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 4:57 PM
I bought tickets from the scammer guy. Enormous disappointment after looking forward to that show for over a month. Now all I can do is effing read about it. I had my doubts, but wanted to go to that show so bad, I figured it was worth the risk. Anyway, his name is Seth Scoblionko, and he's on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/people/Seth-Scoblionko/604140

that show was so amazing
ac are just the cutest and most humble band around even though they're making some of the best music out there
i'm soooo so so glad i got to go
man winters love was a trip out even though there were only like two parts that i could recognize as the song
so dubby
slippi was just cataclysmic for my brain
i wanted to go crazy but all i could do was give a big cheesy smile when the lights blinded me
that new song was really good it has a very 90's feel to me did they add more words instead of just the looping or repeating of blue sky or something?
guys eyes... what can i say
i'm forcing my husband to have that to be our wedding song and he's dedicating it to me
p.s. i hope i wasn't the girl screaming in your air
i know i sung along to every song maybe too loudly and i can't sing for beans
i swear every time they play comfy in nautica they trick me into thinking it choco girl with the same lazer sounds
THANK YOU ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
you guys are SUHWEET

dear animal collective,
you make my 15 year old panties sooooo wet. even though my crouch was sooo dry due to stealing my parents perscription medication, choppin' it up, and snorting the heck outta it. I was arguing with my little sister about who is cuter. All i said is animal collective > jonas brothers. Im drippin wet right now thinking of the 'pew pew' lazer noises you guys so skillfully copy and paste. And those lights made almost throw up the robitussin a chugged outside.....almost

Posted by Anonymous | January 22, 2009 10:22 PM
Who are you creatures that come on to this blog and say like shit setlist? ....Where do you guys live? Houston and D? 7th and D. Anywhere on D? Obviously it would have been nice to hear some other songs but to i find it laughable to critique these guys after they play a sick show at my favorite venue in the city...those songs go well together and just remember that they are playing for themselves and not for you....How often do you see a show that sick? Finally, the dbag making a scene in the middle, kys...
awesome show, probably the last time animal will play a venue that small...let's hope not.
Posted by Noah's Brother Sport | January 22, 2009 10:33 PM

oh, someone post audio.video of "Winters Love"

i don't feel reading through these comments, but hopefully everyone knew that the opening act was Abby Portner aka Avey Tare/David Portner's sister. She's also in a band called Rings and she also did the art for AC up until Strawberry Jam. She is fuckin' amazing and is the perfect woman next to kria brekkan whom avey is coincidentally married to. what a family!
Posted by theFMLY | January 23, 2009 4:52 AM
I'm sure she's great once she gets rid of her annoying baby crying samples.
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 9:00 AM
The setlist posted above is wrong, out of order and a song is missing.
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:17 AM
by god yes we know it's abby portner. but does that mean ppl have to like her. i'm pretty sure she doesn't want ppl to just like her cuz she's one of the guys sister
i happened to like her set it was pretty mooooody it could make for some good atmosphere music or something, i doubt i'd ever listen too it conscientiously, but i do like it better than rings
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:25 AM
wasn't there another new song too towards the end? perhaps before winters love. i'm thinking that it wasn't too vocal so maybe thats why it hasn't been mentioned i thought it was "blue sky" and that blue sky was something else new. anyone else remember it? i would just give it to atmosphere between songs (like they do sometimes)but it had a clear beggining and end (ppl even clapped when it was over)plus it had a melody to it
