Botanica frontman/keyboardist Paul Wallfisch has taken over booking Thursdays upstairs at the Delancey, effectively creating one of the very few "must-see" nights anywhere in the New York rock scene, especially considering that for the time being it's free. Simply put, New York hasn't had a consistent home for intelligent, challenging rock and rock-related music since Tonic closed two and a half years ago. With this new series, playfully titled Small Beast, Wallfisch aims to change that. Typically, he starts the evening solo on piano, perhaps introducing a guest or two and then bringing up the night's featured artist or artists." [Lucid Culture]
Last night's bill (1/29) also featured Erik Sanko (Skeleton Key), Little Annie (who released an album with Paul last year and sang with him at this show), and Baby Dee (currently signed to Drag City and who has shared the stage with Little Annie before). Andrew WK, like he's also done before, sat in as part of Baby Dee's band for the show.

I saw Little Annie @ Brainwaves. She's got enormous eyeballs.

Decent if cabaret is your thing.

Yeah...I gotta admit, this ranks pretty low on the sex appeal scale.

creepy? Low sex appeal? Is this a beauty contest?

Not a beauty contest, but goddamn. That's some exorcist going on there.

damn, missed this.

Little Annie is a lot of fun, live; she played with Wallfisch at Brainwaves. though he came off like a total dick. after he finished his set, he sat in the row in front of me (i.e. the front row), talking as loudly as possible with some cokewhores about how the music at Brainwaves sucked and wasn't really music.

i went because the open beer and wine bar, i sat down with my drink and was truly pleased with baby dee's set. an amazing performance. she really couldn't give more of a fuck about anything. she comes across as a sincere sloppy mother fucker. which made it even better. her music was amazing, great lyrics, and great performance. you will see me at the next one for sure!
