Bruce Springsteen

Since reuniting the E Street Band in concert in 1999, Bruce Springsteen has brought that lineup back into the studio to record two widely praised albums. As successful as that return has been, though, both 2002's The Rising and 2007's Magic came from painful places -- one an effort to heal after 9/11, the other a bitter Bush-era protest.

Working on a Dream, the third E Street Band album of the ?new millennium, feels like a sigh of relief by contrast. Springsteen's topical concerns have subsided for now, washed away by a high tide of positive personal feelings. "Our love will chase the trouble away," the Boss promises on the chiming title track. He sounds downright exhilarated on the uptempo pop ?anthem "My Lucky Day." And good for him. The guy deserves a break after so much eloquent angst. [Entertainment Weekly]

Already everywhere thanks to recent touring, his support of Obama, winning a Golden Globe, and the release of a new album (that is streaming at NPR), Bruce will be even more in the public eye as he plays the Super Bowl halftime show in Tampa, FL this Sunday February 1st. And he won't be resting for long after that. His new North American tour kicks off April 1st in San Jose, California and keeps going until it hits the Izod Center in his home-state of Jersey on May 21st and May 23rd. It is of course possible more NJ dates will be added when those two sell right out. In June he heads to Europe. All dates below...

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:13 AM

wish I hadn't lost my job yesterday, or I'd be there.

Posted by Dave Chait | January 27, 2009 11:19 AM

Bruce Springsteen is a nobody compared to Neil Young.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:20 AM

How can we miss him if doesn't go away?

Posted by donn | January 27, 2009 11:22 AM

2 dates in NJ! Ha...he will add at least 3 or 4 more I pressume?!

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:24 AM

The Super Bowl setlist:

1. Born To Run
2. My Lucky Day
3. The Rising
4. Born In The U.S.A.

3 classics and one new song since his album is out this week and that is the main reason he is performing.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:25 AM

NEIL YOUNG > Bruce Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:25 AM

Bruce Springstein sucks.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:26 AM

Neil Young Super Bowl setlist would be like this:

1. Cinnamon Girl
2. Hey Hey My My
3. Heart of Gold
4. Keep On Rockin' In The Free World

What would Neil Young Do?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:29 AM

Enough with the Springsteen. Why can't Robert Plant finally get a clue and unite Led Zeppelin. That is the tour to end all tours.

Have you seen the bridge?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:31 AM

"Thunder Road! No surrender! No retreat!"

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:32 AM

If you've been paying attention to what Neil Young has been doing of late, you would know that his Super Bowl setlist would be something like this:

-I'm A Cranky Bastard
-I Hate Your Children
-Dick Cheney: Die Motherfucker Die
-Intro to "heart of gold"
-I'm A Cranky Bastard (reprise)

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:39 AM

"one new song since his album is out this week and that is the main reason he is performing."

actually the main reason he is performing is his deep seeded love of the arizona cardinals defensive line.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 11:44 AM

I see Neil playing the following songs at the Super Bowl.....

1. Heart of Gold
2. Harvest Moon
3. Unknown Legend
4. Pardon My Heart

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:03 PM

Looks like we can dispel the Bonnaroo rumors now. I doubt he'd be coming back from Sweden to play the festival and then jet back to Europe to continue touring there...no?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:05 PM

WTF...people in Sweden like Springsteen. Very strange.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:09 PM

Neil Young's song Philadelphia is a better song than Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:19 PM

Springsteen is............................ BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:21 PM

So many good Bruce songs to play. Summer of '69, Jack and Diane, Livin' On A Prayer, Runaway Train. I hope he plays them all.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:24 PM

Fake proletariat schmuck.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:26 PM

I’m tired and I’m sick
Got a habit that I just can’t kick
(I) Feel hungover and I’m all in love
When the lights go down
I’m gonna shoot ‘em all

Its’alrite
Don’t be afraid
You gotta keep dreaming in the bed you made
And if it tastes like shit
Well, it beats sleeping rough on the floor

Keep saying that my head’s locked up in the clouds
Keep praying that the lord won’t slow me down
I’m tired and I’m sick
Got a habit that I can’t, won’t lick
Feel hungover and I’m all in love
Let the lights go down
Me and you are gonna shoot 'em all

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:26 PM

If you haven't seen him w/ the E St Band, this would be a good time to do it as they still bring it. Unlike Neil Young he keeps the tickets prices down - nothing over $100.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:28 PM

but Neil's songs are better than Bruce's.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:30 PM

Neil Young Superbowl set.....

1. A Man Needs A Maid
2. Southern Man
3. Helpless
4. Cortez the Killer

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:35 PM

Is somebody really comparing Bruce to John Cougar and Bryan Adams? Seriously? Get some fucking taste. Have you heard "Nebraska"? "Born to Run"? "Darkness on the Edge of Town"? "The River"? "Greetings from Asbury Park? Even the last few albums were pretty great.

Bryan Adams' best album is "Cuts Like a Knife". And it's a piece of shit.

Posted by wembley | January 27, 2009 12:35 PM

Tom Petty > Bruce Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:36 PM

Radiohead should play the Super Bowl:

1. 15 Step
2. Karma Police
3. Reckoner
4. Creep

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:37 PM

daft punk > neil young

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:46 PM

IF YOU ASK ME, THE SPRINGSTEEN-HATRED IS REALLY JUST CLOAKED ANTI-SEMITISM

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 12:47 PM

12:47. Bruce is not Jewish.

Posted by donn | January 27, 2009 12:51 PM

Max Weinberg is Jewish.

Posted by wembley | January 27, 2009 12:54 PM

I remember when I once had a ton of respect for Bruce prior to his new beief that people deem him qualifies to speak on political matters. Springsteen = socialist.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:02 PM

Springstein is a commi bastard. We learned it in grade school.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:05 PM

Anon 11:25 you're an idiot. He's not going to play The Rising. Why the fuck would he play that depressing song that reminds people of 9/11?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:05 PM

"I was bornnnnnnnn in the U.S.S.R."

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:06 PM

Anon 1:05, correct me if I am wrong but didn't Bruce perform The Rising at the Obama rally two Sunday's ago at the Lincoln Memorial? He will play that and Born In The U.S.A. because people love those songs and they are very popular in middle America. Regardless of what those songs stand for or were written about, Americans love them and see them as Pro-American.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:09 PM

Sunday. Springsteen. Super Bowl. Setlist.

1. Born To Run
2. Dancing In The Dark
3. My Lucky Day
4. Born In The U.S.A. (w/Bono)

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:10 PM

i like bruce, but that picture makes him look like a fruity aerobics instructor.

maybe for song #3 @ the superbowl he'll unveil Alan and Martin and rip straight into "Frankie Teardrop."

there'd be more outraged calls than nipplegate.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:10 PM

Jebediah Springfield aka Hans Sprungfeld

ps - Sprungfeld > Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:11 PM

better than Cody Chestnutt

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:13 PM

Bruce definitely looks like Bon Jovi in that picture. It is common knowledge that Bruce sold out after Nebraska. He then became "poppy" and "mainstream". You gotta roll like Neil. Make music you like, not what rich white people who shop at Walmart like.

Really Bruce? Another greatest hits album? What is that like your 4th? They aren't even for different era's of your development, they are all career spanning ones. Oh goody! This one will only be sold at Walmart.

YAY!

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:13 PM

Win Butler for President!

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:13 PM

Is that really Meg White in that sex tape?

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:15 PM

i cannot believe all of the haters today. i thought that Bruce was one of the few artists we could all agree were above reproach (pre-Born in the USA, at least)

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:19 PM

neil young charged $250 for average seats and played a very mediocore set last time he rolled through nyc. it's okay to love him but still acknowledge thats a lamer move than anything bruce springsteen has ever done

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:24 PM

any set that contains 'cortez the killer' and 'cowgirl in the sand' is several levels removed from mediocre, even if the rest of it involved interpretative dancing to matt and kim songs.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:40 PM

Thunder Road > those 8 or 9 stupid new car songs Neil Young wasted my time with at the Garden last time (for $250). Get a grip, people.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 1:50 PM

saw bruce last year. it was good and awesome. he stills kills it and will likely continue to kill it for some time to come.

Posted by Sacred Absolute Hipster Cow | January 27, 2009 2:06 PM

any set that includes "i'm a cranky bastard" and "i hate your children" is most def. mediocore. and those are basically the songs he played.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 2:09 PM

The following songs were played at all Neil Young concerts last year. When you play these 10 songs and 14 others, you are in for a great time. Neil kills it. Blows Springsteen away everytime he touches a guitar.

Hey Hey, My My
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Cortez The Killer
Cinnamon Girl
The Needle And The Damage Done
Unknown Legend
Heart Of Gold
Old Man
Cowgirl In The Sand
Rockin' In The Free World
A Day In The Life

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 2:10 PM

Springsteen is just an older version of Bon Jovi.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 2:13 PM

5. down by the river
6. cowgirl in the sand
7. ohio

9. after the gold rush
10. only love can break your heart
11. southern man
12. heart of gold
13. old man
14. needle and the damage done
15. on a beach
16. cortez the killer
17. like a hurricane
18. hey hey my my
19. rockin' in the free world
20. unknown legend
21. marvest moon

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 3:54 PM

David Bowie >>>>>>>>>> Bruce Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 3:57 PM

After the Gold Rush and Harvest are terrible, dated, stupid hippy records. I'd rather listen to James Taylor. Neil Young - Crazy Horse = shut up hippy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:00 PM

Bruce Springsteen was and still is a legend! He is awesome and I don't care what any of you say! Just look at his ratings for old and new songs...always a hit!

Posted by erin | January 27, 2009 4:06 PM

Springsteen has nothing to prove to anyone anymore. His best work is definitely behind him though and anyone who actually thinks his material post Born in the USA is good (except Tom Joad and a few tunes on Tunnel of Love) is nuts. The minute Roy Bittan turned in his piano for an emulator and synth during Born in the USA, it was all over for Bruce musically. It's a shame because he has always remained a great writer. But who wants to hear those great lyrics wasted on the same generic, slick sounding music? His music is all overproduced now and it really isn't necessary. At least Neil Young, Petty and artists like Paul Weller keep the rock sounding tough, and their ballads sounding not so overproduced. Hell...listen to the last three Johnny Cash records. The man and his guitar. Nothing plugged in except the audiences ears. Bruce, throw away all your keyboards please.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:08 PM

>Springsteen is just an older version of Bon Jovi.

Ridiculous, in oh so many ways.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:27 PM

wow thanks bruce

thanks boss!

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:32 PM

See him once and be forever changed. Its religious.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:54 PM

if bruce springsteen is the boss than i quit

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 4:57 PM

I think the Super Bowl Half-Time show is the kiss of death. Just the fact that the NFL and TV Networks decides who performs is absolutely lame. They only pick "safe", "older", "white-bread" artists these days. i.e. U2, Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Prince and now Bruce Springsteen. Watching these artists perform at the watered down half time show is like watching a sitcom couple from the 1950s sleep in two bed in the same room!

By the time an artist is selected to perform at the Super Bowl they have no edge or fire left in the tank.

That being said, I really really REALLY hope Coldplay performs at the Super Bowl next year.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 5:29 PM

don't forget to add The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins and Michael Jackson to that list. Watching those artists play was very sad indeed. These shows need fresh air and I'm not talking a mash up of artist that was common place in the late 90s and early 2000s.

No Sting, Timberlake, Jessica Simpson, Amy Winehouse, Aguilera, Coldplay, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, John Cougar Mellencamp, Peter Gabriel or Goo Goo Dolls.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 5:36 PM

SUPER BOWL HALF TIME SHOW = career over for sure

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 5:46 PM

It's Joe Arpaio's fault, not Bruce's.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 9:44 PM

Please get a new thermometer; rectal if required.

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 10:04 PM

5:29 Prince may not be what he used to be but he absolutely killed it at the Super Bowl 07. Purple Rain IN THE RAIN c'mon!!!

Who do I want to play the Super Bowl? Easy....Neil "Fucking" Young. Or one of the following: Led Zeppelin, The Who, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse, and a reunited Smiths!

Bruce is as boring as a brown paper bag lunch.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 7:11 AM

I'd like to see Flight of the Conchords play

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 7:46 AM

I'd love me some Black Lips at the Super Bowl. Those two new tracks off their new album ('Short Fuse' and 'Starting over')are fantastic!

This is the last real American punk band going at the moment.

Kick ass.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 9:52 AM

I'd love to see a joint tour of Black Lips and Deerhunter. I know they are close friends and that Brandon Cox is actually appearing on one of their new songs. Awesome!

Also, Donovan > Springsteen

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 9:58 AM

Predicted setlist by the boss....

1. Radio Nowhere (Featuring the line is there anybody still alive out there)

2. Born In The U.S.A. (Middle America and Reagan loved it)

3. My Lucky Day (Promote new single)

4. Born To Run (His best song)

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 10:10 AM

The Kinks should play the Super Bowl. Unite the Tribe Ray!

1. You Really Got Me
2. Victoria
3. Come Dancing
4. Lola
