Charlie Cooper, RIP (Telefon Tel Aviv)

Charlie Cooper

Hello, Everyone.

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.

Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvelous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a neice, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

Yours in Music,

Joshua Eustis

Tripwire adds, "According to CBS, Cooper was last seen a little before midnight on January 21, when he left the home of a friend in the Wicker Park area of Chicago after arguing with his girlfriend. He had no contact with family or friends after that point until his body was found. CBS reports that Cooper has had a history of threatening suicide, but did not make any suicide claims last week. Medical examiners hope that an autopsy, scheduled to take place today, will help determine the cause of death."

i remember them when i first got into hefty records...probably a decade ago...didnt really follow the band but i know they had a good following.

very sad whenever someone goes so young.

Please do not judge the situation until you have the facts. It is much deeper than you can ever imagine.

Please God, take Charlie in your arms and hold him tight.

i saw these guys play in this venue in the basement of one of the dorms at my university during my freshman year. it was great. they were really nice also. such a shame.

normally i wouldn't justify such a stupid comment with a response but charlie's girlfriend is one of the sweetest, most caring people on the planet. the two of them had an amazingly strong bond and were a beautiful, couple. charlie was clearly troubled and to say that she had anything to do with his death is not only unfair and unfounded, but absolutely ignorant. she is devastated and if anything, our thoughts and prayers should be with her as she endures a hardship that no one should ever have to face.

AMEN and God Bless you too. You obviously know both of them. Thank you for your post. This is such a terrible tragedy for everyone.

so sad, new album has been on heavy rotation in my ears lately too

Posted by Anonymous | January 27, 2009 9:39 PM

RIP Carlitos.. from your cousin Marcel.

Posted by Marcel | January 27, 2009 9:47 PM

This is messed up... even more messed up is the fact that the name of their new album is called 'immolate yourself.'

From wikipedia: 'so more generally self-immolation means suicide without specifying the method'

Anyways, they made really great tunes...sucks.

Yikes!

Never listened to them, then I hear about this so I download the new album.

Helen of Troy is phenomenal.

Worst way to get into a band.

My heart is utterly broken. Sound in a dark room never sounded so clear.... RIP Charlie. Peace with you also, Joshua.

A month ago, this guy came to a party and DJ'd along side my band ( not well known at all) just because he was a nice guy and it was for a good cause. There was about 30 people there, but it didn't seem to matter at all. He was one of the nicest people I've ever met, and their music was totally kick ass. One of the good ones is gone.

Charlie, rest in peace. We will always remember you. Your cousin, Bivita.

One of the kindest people I have ever come in contact with. RIPl. such a blow to the cities of new orleans and chicago where he touched so many.

Posted by Anonymous | January 28, 2009 3:38 PM

i knew charlie briefly in high school and thereafter in new orleans. he was a genuinely cool guy, and telefon made some awesome music. rest in peace, charlie. thoughts going out to josh and charlies family and friends.

There needs to be a release of his solo work that he only let his hear. From what I hear and from listening to his solo remixes it must be amazing.

If anyone hasn't heard it, go to Amazon and download his remix of Carmen Rizzo's "Too Rude", the Double Dutch Mix. Beautiful.

He was an amazing musician, and a very nice sincere guy. I only met him a few times but he was always very warm.

Heart goes out to Josh and others close to him.

Charlie was a troubled soul

Posted by anonymous | January 29, 2009 2:10 PM

Can you elaborate on that?

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 3:32 PM

you have no idea, what a cold harsh thing to write....you don't even know...keep your mean-spirited thoughts to yourself.

Posted by sara | January 30, 2009 12:10 AM

Actually, I wasn't being mean-spirited at all.

Jesus.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2009 2:09 AM

No, not mean-spirited, just a callous prick.

Posted by anonymous | January 30, 2009 1:13 PM

I'm not the one who said he was a "troubled soul". Keep saying that and people will ask questions.

That's the problem with this world -- too many secrets. Nobody knows anybody.

Posted by Anonymous | January 30, 2009 3:16 PM

new album is pretty amazing, though it doesn't really sound like their old stuff at all. i hope he at least knew how good this immolate yourself is.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2009 11:26 AM

I met charlie a few years back; I thought he was a pretty amazing guy; very talented; this is truly a shame may he rest in peace our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends!!! PEACE

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2009 10:13 PM

hey asshole self immolation is the act of burning oneself to death.

Posted by Anonymous | January 31, 2009 11:37 PM

nice title

Posted by Anonymous | February 1, 2009 3:40 PM

Anyone notice the album name is "immolate yourself" -- look up the definition of "immolate" ... the suicide could have been Charlie's "final offering....," a sacrifice... how sad. I love TTA -- I wish you the strength to continue and pick yourself up -- you have such a strong community of people that care about you all around the world... be with friends, be with us. We are here for you.

I am a person from Charlies past. He was an amazing person. I went to his senior prom with him and he was the life of the party. I can't seem to grasp what happen, What went wrong? He was a very passionate person about every thing he did. He was a singer in a ska band in new orleans. He will truly be missed, and my heart goes out to his family.

I am so sad to hear this unwelcome news. Charlie was awesome. I dj'ed a wedding this summer that he was originally supposed to play. I hope I represented well since I'm sure he would have been a rare and talented part of the night.
Sweetest guy ever.
Love and respect.
