Coachella 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)
Coachella

"It is the start of a new year and that means we're slouching towards Southern California's biggest music festivals, starting with Coachella in the middle of April. And the internet is simply ablaze with line-up rumors. But this year, much like last, crazed fans have taken things a step further on the festival's message board, going as far as to contact bands directly for confirmation.

At the forefront of this year's rumor mill are scores of potential summer blockbuster acts, including Animal Collective, Basement Jaxx, the Black Keys, Blur, Britney Spears, Four Tet, Glasvegas, José González, Keane, Morrissey, N.A.S.A, Neil Young, Outkast, the Pretenders, the Prodigy, the Replacements, the Smiths, the Thermals and the White Stripes. And among the purportedly confirmed artists, who have been reached through Myspace or other means, are some pretty sizable LA locals like No Age, Peanut Butter Wolf, the Airborne Toxic Event and Flying Lotus." [LAIST]

Speaking of the Airborne Toxic Event, they sold out their Bowery Ballroom show and added another one on March 8th (three days earlier). They also just so happen to be the band playing David Letterman tonight (1/12).

Fleet Foxes are another one of those listed as confirmed. They're also confirmed to play SNL next week.

Also confirmed are Los Campesinos! who are playing a show at Sound Fix Records this week.

All confirmed and rumored Coachella artists (according to LAist) below...

Confirmed Artists: the Airborne Toxic Event, the Bug, Buraka Som Sistema, Crystal Castles, Drop The Lime, Fleet Foxes, Flying Lotus, Girl Talk, the Hold Steady, the Killers, No Age, Noah and the Whale, Late of the Pier, Los Campesinos!, Peanut Butter Wolf, the Presets, Sébastien Tellier, Themselves, Tinariwen

Confirmed DJs: DJ Gina Turner, DJ Hipnotic Starr, DJ Luis Segura, DJmorales, DJ Zegon

Rumored Artists: Animal Collective, Basement Jaxx, the Black Keys, Black Lips, Blur, Britney Spears, the Comedians of Comedy, Four Tet, the Gaslight Anthem, Glasvegas, Gui Boratto, Gus Black, Heartless Bastards, Hot Little Pony, José González, Keane, KONGCRETE, Mexican Institute of Sound, Monotonix, Morrissey, Mr. Lif, N.A.S.A., Neil Young, OutKast, Plump DJs, the Pretenders, the Prodigy, the Replacements, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roni Size Reprazent, the Smiths, the Thermals, Turbonegro, We Are Scientists, White Lies, the White Stripes

In October and December 2008, The Sun reported that the Smiths would be reforming to play at the Coachella Festival in 2009. However, Johnny Marr later stated through his management that the rumours were "rubbish".

Am I out of the loop cause I've never heard of any of those DJ's?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:02 PM

peanut butter wolf <3

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:11 PM

Maybe they should have just listed people who *aren't* "rumored" to play.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:19 PM

...britney spears?

Posted by jack | January 12, 2009 2:30 PM

Lannnngerado.

Posted by June D | January 12, 2009 2:33 PM

Full Smiths reunion is not happening. Morrissey and Marr is! Also, U2 kicking off their tour at Coachella...which is crazy considering their ridiculous contract with LiveNation. Coachella must be paying U2 big money...or U2 just really wants to get some indie type cred??

Other bands confirmed: James, the Prodigy, Public Enemy, Elbow and the Soup Dragons.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:40 PM

@ 2:40
Sources Please. I find Prodigy highly unlikely as they are playing a show in London the Saturday night of Coachella.

Posted by Bob Roberts | January 12, 2009 2:43 PM

Wrong...Prodigy is not playing Saturday. They play Friday...flying to CA on Saturday to play Sunday night Coachella.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:48 PM

Prodigy cannot take a plane, they still travel by boat.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:49 PM

Ben and Zoey Gibbard will be hosting private viewings their sex tape

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:50 PM

Coachella is going to blow this year.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 2:56 PM

that dj lineup alone is pretty awesome

Posted by jason | January 12, 2009 2:58 PM

is all points west gonna come back this year?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:03 PM

The Replacements?! Never gonna happen.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:04 PM

Replacements? Last time I check Bob Stinson was still dead. Will they get a replacement Replacement?

(yes, he didn't play on the last couple of albums, but those are not the best albums either)

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:17 PM

Is Siren happening this year?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:19 PM

How can Red Hot Chili Peppers be a rumor when they have are on indefinite hiatus and played 2 years ago...for the 2nd time? These rumors are just ridiculous. Also, White Stripes? They are on hiatus at the moment as well...people will believe anything they read or hear.

Does anyone have any more info on the U2 rumor? I heard this over the weekend as well and find it hard to believe? But I can totally see the Marr and Moz rumor happening and them giving the big paycheck to charity and never doing it again.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:23 PM

boyz to men are playing at coachella. i spoke with a source who owns a hotdog stand, and he told me that the dirty water said that b2m are playing. INSANE!

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:29 PM

Yes, All Points West will return.

Posted by Monklish | January 12, 2009 3:32 PM

@ 3:23, I heard U2 is kicking off their tour in Spain so the rumor probably holds no truth.

A Rolling Stone article quotes Coachella's promoters as saying they aren't looking to spend big bucks this year so don't expect anything too crazy.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 3:45 PM

Lineup comes out a week from today...expect to see Bono & Co on that lineup.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:05 PM

no doubt is likely headlining one night.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:12 PM

what about will smith?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:18 PM

As of today, U2 and No Doubt are now officially committed to headline Coachella, along with The Killers. The lineup was intended to be released today, but due to problems seeking headliners (everyone else said no), it will be coming next week instead.

Posted by Monklish | January 12, 2009 4:26 PM

^HaHa

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:51 PM

But isn't it time for the White Stripes to return according to the WS/Raconteurs rotation that's been in effect for the last few years? I wouldn't be surprised if a new album is already mixed and mastered.

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:54 PM

Why dont you have U2 and No Doubt listed on ur blog monklish?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:55 PM

I'm still holding for....

Friday-The Killers
Saturday-Neil Young
Sunday-Radiohead

Posted by Jonny Greenwood is the man | January 12, 2009 4:56 PM

What about the Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 4:59 PM

How much are tix gonna be with headliners like U2 and Morrissey and Johnny Marr?

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 5:13 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 5:17 PM

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 5:35 PM

DAFT PUNK!

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 5:39 PM

@anon455

Because I didn't post that, clearly. I'm not posting anymore confirmations on anything other than my own blog. Any future posts under my guise that have "confirmations" were not posted by me.

Posted by Monklish | January 12, 2009 5:59 PM

The above poster is an impostor. My blogger account was hacked so I cannot update it.

Rick Astley will be there, no seriously. No Pulp and no Blur but Elastica will play. So will Huey Lewis & the News. I take my source on these very seriously, there is no way these are trap streets.

Posted by Monklish | January 12, 2009 6:13 PM

glad to see that I've made such a fan. sorry that jarvis cocker won't be there, though, buddy. Maybe asobi seksu will play...

Posted by Monklish | January 12, 2009 6:22 PM

the smiths are reuniting guys!!!

CARTER THE UNSTOPPABLE SEX MACHINE REUNION

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 8:36 PM

That's so cool! Any Coachella news about Israel bombing Gaza into the dark ages, or is that not hip enough?! Yey! Another year of American progress - or um, lack thereof!

Posted by Anonymous | January 12, 2009 9:18 PM

Far is going to Coachella? Wow.

Blur at Coachella would be pretty epic.

Posted by kata rokkar | January 12, 2009 9:54 PM

Whether CoS lifts the content from message boards or not, you have to admit that their Festival Outlook is pretty badass and a great resource - and still takes a lot of hard work.

PAVEMENT PAVEMENT PAVEMENT PAVEMENT PAVEMENT

Posted by creme anglaise | January 13, 2009 3:27 AM

I'm surprised so many people and sites out there are taking my word on the rumors and confirmations. I'll be honest with everyone: I don't know what I'm talking about. My sources are the messages boards, MySpaces and tours of the bands listed and a few sources with ties to Goldenvoice and artist agencies. I started the CoS Festival Outlook to keep track of the lineup but never intended it to be used as an official news source. My "Confirmed" section of names will undoubtedly happen, but to see a bunch of websites quoting mine in fine print is beyond me since I feel it hinders on credible journalism (even if you are just a music blog.)

All this aside, the biggest RUMOR that I have heard at the moment in regards to headliners is that Morrissey will be playing Friday, No Doubt will be playing Saturday and Faith No More will reunite on Sunday. Also, something that nobody has said yet is that Garbage will return and subheadline Saturday. Expect the official word to be released Monday morning (January 19th.)

Thanks
Alex

Hey Anon @ 9:18 PM, have you ever thought to try nytimes.com, huffingtonpost.com, salon.com, dailykos.com, thinkprogress.org, or any number of the millions of news sites devoted to talking about important world news items for the kind of news you're looking for? The internet is full of places to talk about all different kinds of stuff. You should totally check it out.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 9:47 AM

rumored list is pretty tight.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 9:48 AM

tight and wrong

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 1:05 PM

Since every band in every hemisphere is playing, why not The Kinks reunion show, too? C'mon Dave, lighten up, and Ray, stop picking on your little brother already; it's been like 62 years: enough.

Posted by donn | January 13, 2009 4:01 PM

I also expect something from the White Stripes This Year. Jack White is always ready with new material.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 4:47 PM

Hey 9:27, I just googled 'douche' and you showed up in the search! How weird!
PS Thanks for the list of 'important websites'. See? Ignoring problems doesn't make them go away. Keep ignoring those world problems, stand in a field and keep playing your bongos. It's ok, don't worry about a thing...

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 8:11 PM

Hey 8:11, there was no 9:27.

Google "dumbass" so your mom can post your pic on fridge after she has sent you money towards an education that's not well spent.

Posted by Anonymous | January 13, 2009 9:03 PM

@ 8:11

Stop trying to think you're saving the world.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2009 8:15 AM

FAITH. NO. MORE.

Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2009 2:28 PM

Neutral Milk Hotel

I'm hearing that after showing his face and singing a NMH song a few times during the "Elephant 5 Holiday Surprise Tour", the incredibly private Jeff Mangum has had the itch to get the band back together and headline the first night of Coachella right before Britney Spear's set. Oh boy! Can't wait.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2009 6:51 AM

9:03, sorry about the typo, maybe if you weren't eating paint chips and jerking off to Deerhunter or whatever silly-ass band you listen too, someone here could actually understand what you're saying.
Also "post your pic on fridge" isn't proper English, dumbass.

8:15, never said I was saving the world, but if people here in the comment board are too ignorant to know what's happening in the world outside of hipsterindieville, (like yourself obviously) and jerk off at terrible/pretensious shows instead of um, actually contributing something that could be considered 'progress', then hey, it's your problem and not mine. Good luck, and you'll probably need alot of it.

Posted by Anonymous | January 15, 2009 11:20 PM

Stevie Wonder will be there

Posted by Anonymous | January 16, 2009 5:04 AM

@11:20

You're rant here makes absolutely zero cents and is unsubstantiated on so many levels. To start, you're saying that we need to live in fear, not enjoy ourselves and can't enjoy our personal God-given talents and lives because something awful may be or is happening somewhere in the world that we actually have no control over (and don't preach to me about "progress" because the reality of the matter is that a single college kid at NYU or a housewife in Hoboken can't do a whole lot about Gaza being bombed, a plane crashing in the Hudson or the economy being in the shitter -- Unless your longterm goals are political leadership or to become a wealthy person, and will use your success there to change those matters. Again, longshot for the general population...)

What are you even talking about when you say "whats happening in this world?" The truth to the matter is you can't personally control the world and what happens to it. Bad shit is always going to happen and even worse is that people just don't care. Sad, but yup, that's reality. If it doesn't effect us, then we don't care. You hear that? Humans: They're selfish. That is reality. Everyone here dies alone. There is always going to be someone out there who believes your beliefs or priorities are meaningless. You're not going to change any body else's minds or opinions if the ones they hold are what define them. That's not say your decisions on what you do with your life are wrong, but all I'm saying is that you can't come on here and randomly burst out that anyone who cares about music is wasting their lives. You're no better than the suicide bomber who kills an entire innocent family because he thinks his extreme religious beliefs are right and their's are wrong.

Fuck you, all you have done here is demonstrate to everyone that even with your above-thou knowledge and awareness of "whats happening in the world outside", you actually live inside a self-absorbed bubble that cannot comprehend the definition of ACCEPTANCE.

Anon at 10:00 am. I was really interested in reading the banter back and forth between you and the other anonymous messages. But I stopped readinig after two ridiculous grammar mistakes in your first sentence. Now, I'm SURE someone will be able to find something wrong with this post. Honestly though, CENTS. That makes a lot of cents, and dollars.

Posted by Jason | January 29, 2009 9:10 AM

@ 9:10am

This is a BrooklynVegan comment board, not the U.S. Supreme Court. If a couple of ranting mistakes offend you and skew your perception on sound arguments, you might as well go join Mr. The Sky Is Falling up above and his plight to stop another bad thing from happening in the world. Perhaps your's can be grammar?
