Fucked Up
Pissed Jeans

The show kicked off with '80s Hardcore, which plays exactly that. The band opened with a cover of Minor Threat's "Straight Edge" and burned through a set that came to a frenzied head with Black Flag's classic "Wasted." Cover bands don't normally do it for me, but I was won over by the excellent song choices and infectious gusto of the band...

...Pissed Jeans took the stage in a mess of flash photography and wall punching. The band ripped through a set that brought to mind the great Arab on Radar/Locust tour of '99--everyone was spazzing just cause it felt so good. I'd be hard pressed to name a band today that puts on a better show ("This looks like the end of the world," a genteel friend of mine commented. "I love it.") or whips the audience into more of a frenzy. People were standing on amps! People were diving through the air! Pissed Jeans makes the sort of music that turns good kids bad. [NY Press]

We already posted Andrew Frisicano's take on Fucked Up's set. Pictures from the whole show below...

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:26 AM

the photos do kind of suck

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:37 AM

these photos were taken only during the first couple songs of Fucked Up's set.

i think the crowd is just as responsible for fueling the band as the band is for fueling the crowd. the band's and the crowd from the market hotel both deserve a pat on the back. without showing pictures of the crowd from a punk/hardcore show its truly hard trying to figure out how the show went.

i want to see the photos of people getting crushed, climbed on walked on, surfed on, etc. There were a lot of photographers from that show...i know someone has something good. lets see it

80's Hardcore sounds alright. I'll pass when 60's Hardcore comes to town.

Posted by Juste Sain | January 23, 2009 10:50 AM

considering what a fuck hole market hotel looks like it was, the photos are pretty good actually.

anon 1023... i've seen the vivian girls live a handful of times...i think its definitely safe to say their live acts keep improving. they played an awesome show and seriously had a tubular jam at the end. hats off to the vivian girls.

that video from the philly show looked like it was really boring

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:53 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:54 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:57 AM

crowd shots are stupid it's about the music

At a punk show they are an integral part of of documenting the experience. Like 10:49 said, it's a good way to gauge how the gig went down. It's also good publicity- nothing's better than some shots of the crowd interacting with/ going crazy for the bands.

Is Tom Yaps the singer of Fucked Up?

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 11:15 AM

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 11:45 AM

These bands all fucking suck and even naked I can see right through the emperors new clothes.

Posted by Ron Reagan Jr | January 23, 2009 11:59 AM

emperors new clothes? Fucked Up have been around since 2001

Posted by parx | January 23, 2009 12:06 PM

Oh why didn't you say so before? 2001 really?! Jesus I didn't realize they were originators AND veterans. So if I'm doing the math right these guys are seasoned men commemorated in the renown league of 2001 with such esteemed alma mata as the Strokes and My Chemical Romance. About time for the biopic, dick.

Posted by Ron Reagan Jr | January 23, 2009 12:14 PM

Shut up loser.

another proud moment on the Brooklyn Vegan comment zone. always tops for smart and informed commentary

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 12:30 PM

"This looks like the end of the world," a genteel friend of mine commented. "I love it." He then gently walked into the bathroom and went face down on a pile coke. Later on that night, he tried to explain to me how his brother loved hardcore music and had he ever bothered to go to a show it would probably be just like this, except safer.

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 12:56 PM

you Brooklyn Vegan commenters are such neophytes and know nothings.

Market Hotel is a lot less weird and crazzzee than you guys are convinced it is

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 5:08 PM

where are all the naked pinkeye pictures!

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 5:15 PM

For those of you that have never been at the Market, I think you should check it out soon-ish for your own gratification.

All these bands were fantastic, and Gavin McGuinness was hilarious and over-the-top. Now that Todd P. is in a lull, the few shows that are organized are all high-quality.

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 6:47 PM

Todd's still out there doing like 4 shows a week, I don't know how much of a "lull" he's in.

last month of shows have all been really strong, he think he's just killing it lately for whatever reason.

"fuck that squire bass the vivian girl has, get a real fender"
seriously dude, you didn't read the memo? expensive intruments are unfit for punk rock. i remeber the first picture i'd ever seen of kim gordon smiling (probably also the last) was one where she had a bass with a $35 price tag in her hands.
and yeah, the VGs shows keep sounding tighter.

Posted by Al-anon | January 23, 2009 7:05 PM

i cant find pictures! i agree with those other guys.. hlp! i can't find anything. i tried googling i guess i suck at it.... can someone supply linkss?????? it would b greatly appreciated

Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:23 PM

where the fuck are the good pictures? i fuckin painted my face with blood at that show and you'd think that this show was a goddamn coffee shop open mic night or something judging by these pictures.
