Union Hall

Hockey played four NYC shows last week. After a negative first impression, I thought maybe I would give them a chance live, but I never made it out. I talked to people who did though and the reviews ranged from bad to ok to great. Did you catch them? What did you think? The next MGMT? More pictures from two of the shows below...
Union Hall...

Mercury Lounge...

They also played Santos Party House and Pianos.

nah, people were definitely at the shows
i don't really get the negative vibes. not my thing, really, but they're a pretty good band with good songs. they have a little bit of a MGMT vibe but they're a little different. they put on a pretty good performance at santo's; lots of industry type hubbub. don't make assumptions based on the style or they way people dress, these guys are really nice and cool.
don't tear down what you're not into, just go to what you like and big up that . . .

They played Union Hall, Mercury Lounge, Santos, AND Pianos?
Why didn't they just play like one show at Bowery...
It's just really ridiculous when these "major indie" bands play the indie circuit using their major-label booking clout to override all of these venues' "two weeks" rules to make it look like they bubbled up more organically...just take the fact that you're signed to a major and own it. It means people who listen to music for a living think you're good and have more hooks than a tackle box. If your music is good people don't care if you've ever played at Pianos (no one cares if anyone ever played Pianos).
They sound like if MGMT only sounded like their good songs (as opposed to their non-single album cuts).

I don't know whats more unimaginative - Hockey's music or the comparison to MGMT.

Best of luck to these handsome and energetic young men.

been listening to these guys for years.
don't get the negativity. the new songs are solid. singer has a neo-soul thing going on.

What's with the lead singer's headband? Is this the campy 80's retro headgear kitsch that passes for irreverance among soul-less signed-to-major bands that have an expected future lifespan of about 18 months?

i'm usually a positive commenter, but this band really sucked.

i just have a hard time supporting a contrived major label band playing shit music...
these guys are like slaughter in 1989.

caught these guys a few times at spaceland in LA, before they landed their deal with Capitol. they were absolutely horrible. looks to me Capitol wanted their own subpar version of MGMT. major labels have a storied history of signing loads of bands in the same genre. what happened to the art of A&R? oh right, it was over and done with ages ago.

Dear Abby,
how long does it take to put on skinny jeans? like, if you have skinny legs but a big gut because you're a drinker. could you rock out the skinny jeans if you have a big cock? i get embarrass sometimes, but my legs are thin but my gut and dick are big...

People were out for sure and they were amazing. Never heard of them before and a friend pulled me out and I was blown away. Great songs and very energetic band. And as far as "contrived major label band" how about The Strokes (RCA/Sony), Interpol (Capitol) and MGMT (Columbia) just to name a few. The label the band is on is meaningless, it's about what direction the band takes it in.
