Ida Maria
Ida Maria

I saw Ida Maria for the first time last night (1/15). At approximately 9pm she blew in like a tornado, and 30 minutes later she was gone. Jax Rock Insider recently saw her show in LA...

.....well...all I can say really is "Oh My God." The woman is a rock goddess. She wore a gold flapper dress and over the next 30 minutes proceeded to shimmy, shake, writhe, and rock the fuck into the entire audience's collective heart. There have been occasions in the past where female indie pop stars use their sultry attitude and bad girl stage behavior to launch them to superstar status (Lily and Amy I'm looking at you) Ida blew both of them out of the water for me. Ida Maria is the real deal.
As some in the comments pointed out, Karen O is a good comparison if you want to talk about her actual performance. Music Snobbery was also there last night, and wrote, "She is THE rock goddess of 2009." Now I also know what Bill has been raving on about.

Ida plays again in NYC, tonight, January 16, 2009, for the lucky ones with tickets at Union Hall in Brooklyn. If you missed her this time, don't worry I'm sure she'll be back soon. Listen at MySpace. More pictures and the setlist from Mercury Lounge below...

Those Darlins opened the short show. Ida dedicated the night to the survivors of the plane that landed in the Hudson earlier that day.

It was an ok show.
Reminded me of Lone Justice circa 1986.....showing my age.

"It was an ok show."

What shows have you seen lately that were better?

That's me up there, holding Ida's hand (she reached out to me!) and devil horn-ing it up. If anyone ever wonders why I show up to concerts early, that's why. Next time she comes to America, you better believe I'll get there even earlier- no matter how long I have to stand around doing nothing beforehand, being front row center for Ida Maria is more than worth it.

You need to take the stupid glasses off if this blew Lilly Allen and Amy Winehouse out your field of vision. Be truthful and compare this with Karen O or somebody like that.

I completely agree with the above. This was a bravura performance- reminded me much more of Karen O (of course) or Jack White. Perhaps the comparison to Allen and Winehouse comes from Ida Maria being European and from ostensibly being a solo artist (with a backing band), but the similarities to Ms. Orzolek are far stronger.

the comparison to Lily and Amy comes from another review.

The quote is pretty straighforward. It says "occasions in the past where female indie pop stars use their sultry attitude and bad girl stage behavior". It isn't referring to her actual performance when comparing to those other girls.

I'm pretty sure Ida and Rainer Maria have toured together at some point.

She's amazing. Female Jack White is a good call in terms of her emotional intensity. That said, her band is douche-y as hell -- total session musician backing band guitars-in-the-air bs.

She was really fucking good at Union Hall last night.

Coming from a Scandinavian perspective (am Danish), I really can't see what you're raving about. Just like you go crazy about Robyn (whom I do rate though), Ida Maria is just straight up pop... and to be honest, rather dull and not that interesting... and now I have a feeling someone's gonna want to hit me. Oh well...

@ 2:37

i'm not in love with her album, but have you seen her perform? that is indeed something to rave about.

Posted by Anonymous | January 17, 2009 2:55 PM

@ 2:55

Haven't actually seen her live just heard the album, so fair point. Must make sure to see her next time she's in town then.

she must have blown her voice out at bowery-- she had a lot of trouble getting her voice through the songs at union hall.

I thought she was fabulous. Im so tired of faux indie bad girls. Ida Maria was superb
