John Martyn

The singer-songwriter John Martyn has died aged 60.

Known for musical marriage of folk and jazz, Martyn was one of the most distinctive and prolific artists of his generation. His most successful album was 1973's Solid Air, the title song of which was said to be in tribute to singer-songwriter Nick Drake, with whom Martyn was often compared.

His career spanned four decades and he worked with numerous high-profile musicians, including Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Phil Collins. He also worked extensively with his former wife Beverley Martyn. [the Guardian]

What a loss. I count myself lucky to have been a fan and to have met the man. May he rest in peace.

A true loss. I saw him at Joe's Pub a few months back and he could only play 6 songs because he was in such bad shape. He couldn't breathe but his guitar playing was still in tact.

His song "Small Hours" from 1977's One World is 8 minutes of ambient folk bliss... so ahead of his time. Echoplex variations, seagull tape loops, and Moog wanderings, with John's voice woven through the mix. I miss him already.

"Hurt in your Heart" off his album "Grace and Danger" may be on of the best and most soul crushing songs ever written. Great musician. RIP.

Sad. I was turned on to him just last year after a friend taped Road to Ruin for me. Such a cool, timeless record.
