Phish announce 2009 Tour Dates (2 nights @ Jones Beach)

"Earlier this morning Phish.com was updated with dates for Phish's June tour, announced with the help of a video which featured a plane skywriting with a Punch You In The Eye soundtrack. The tour takes the quartet from their home base in the Northeast down to Asheville and out to the Midwest." [Glide Magazine]"The tour kicks off with the band's first visit to Long Island's Jones Beach amphitheater since 1995." The Jones Beach dates are June 4th & 5th. $49.50 tickets go on sale Friday January 30th at 10AM.
UPDATE: There is also a presale happening now.
Phish previously announced three March shows in Virginia, and there's the rumor that they'll also be playing Bonnaroo, to which Bob Lefsetz says...
"You might think this is bullshit. You'll point to the gross. You'll say everyone's happy. I'll say this is the kind of thinking that fucked up our business. It's only about money, not about soul. Phish should only think about its fans. Not its manager's need to sell out a festival that dropped significantly in attendance last year."Hippies are going nuts. First the Dead, and now Phish. "On March 3rd, Phish will release The Clifford Ball on JEMP Records/Rhino. This major archival release features the band's entire performance at the 1996 festival, which was the largest concert in North America that year and the first of many two-day festivals staged by the group. Over 70,000 fans turned out for the event, which was held at a decommissioned Air Force base in Plattsburgh, NY. The seven-DVD box set will contain more than nine hours of music, including a bonus disc with Phish's extended soundcheck, its late night flatbed truck jam and a 30-minute featurette with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. The original multi-track recordings have been remixed for stereo and 5.1 audio. Fans can pre-order The Clifford Ball at http://drygoods.phish.com."

Forget about Phish...i just got the scoop on Coachella this year and boy is it going to be insane!
Not sure who plays what night...but they actually have one night with Blur and Oasis (co-headlining), Morrissey solo set with Johnny Marr to join for a Smiths set, and U2 headlining a night (first show of their new tour!).
This will be the sickest festival ever.
Posted by PhilPenta | January 8, 2009 2:18 PM
Didn't one of the band members get caught being alone with a underage kid the last time they played Jones Beach, and got beat up for it?
Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2009 2:20 PM
I saw Oysterhead at Bonnaroo and they were actually really fun. I don't love the album, but live it was a lot more interesting.
Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2009 2:20 PM
Exactly how much jet fuel was spent flying the planes to do the skywriting?
Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2009 2:20 PM
With the re-emergence of the Dead/Phish, I feel like it's one of those movie scenes where a normal looking office worker digs to the bottom of their drawer and reluctantly pulls out the old tie-dyed shirt and bellbottom pants.
Then, they proceed to the back of the closet where they find the glass bowl and their used copy of On The Road.
Finally, you have the shot in front of the full-length mirror where they suit up.
There's the inner turmoil as they try to remember if tickets to a Phish show used to cost $80 plus $35 in Ticketmaster fees.
All of a sudden there's ten thousand hippies in the city.
Posted by Anonymous | January 8, 2009 2:21 PM
I would rather see Phish for $100 than Coachella with Blur and Oasis for free.

Always interesting to see Phish posts on BV. The indie community has always distanced itself from Phish and their "hippie" "trustafarian" fanbase, but in actuality they started as a completely independent DIY band. They even helped revolutionize file sharing, and the way we trade music online today. I'm not expecting anyone on here to care about them, in fact I lost interest a long time ago myself, but they remain an important musical act nonetheless

As someone who straddles the fence (used to be a huge Phish fan, saw a ton of shows, spent an embarrassing amount of time in college searching soulseek for shows, etc., but has since moved on) ...
I might pick up tickets for the Camden or Jones Beach shows. When I heard that they were about to announce this tour, I pulled out a few of my favorite shows to listen to last night (after having not listened to them for maybe a year or two) and was struck by how cluttered their big songs sounded now. Stuff like Reba, YEM, Fluffhead, etc.-- it all sounds kind of blah. But some of those jams are still just as exciting as anything I listen to now. I can't imagine that they'd be anywhere near the top of their game after not playing together for five years, but eh, Phish shows are always fun. And honestly, I'd be curious to see what Lot looks like now.

Anon 2:20: "Didn't one of the band members get caught being alone with a underage kid the last time they played Jones Beach, and got beat up for it?"
Wiki says:
"On August 11, 2003, Gordon was arrested for endangering the welfare of a minor after an alleged photo shoot involving a nine-year-old girl inside a deserted boathouse behind Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York, following a performance by The Dead. The girl's father was a leader of a Hells Angels chapter. While being held before police arrived to arrest him, the Angels "were not gentle with the sensitive areas of the rock star's body." After his arrest, he told officers, "I may have shown bad judgment, but I am not a pedophile." A month later, Gordon was officially cleared of any wrongdoing."

I'm glad that all of the posters who hate phish will not be at the shows. Of course people who hate phish will not be excited that phish are touring. But who cares what you think?
I would ask you why you spending so much time spewing negative shit, focusing on being angry about things you don't like. Spend that time spewing positive shit about about things you do like!
phish makes great music, and they brought together a TON of warm, friendly people in the 90s and 00s. We are used to being made fun of, but we don't really take it to heart. We just keep doing our thing, and we don't bitch about you doing your thing.
The world is big enough for everyone, and there's ALOT of people who could use a reminder on that score these days.

Considering their tour takes a breif halt midway the week of bonnaroo, I'll assume the rumors of them headlining (more than one night) are true.
PS Blur may be playing coachella but no way is johhny marr reuniting with morrissey, even if he does play the festival again because he's going back on tour about that time.
Posted by Antonio | January 9, 2009 8:15 AM
i agree with the phish fan. I think phish opening for the dead would be pretty good, and if both play bonnaroo, even better.

These comments are kinda funny. So many people feel the need to prove to strangers they dont like Phish. I think they have some great songs, but I love music, not just a scene.

Whether you dig Phish or not...to each his own. We obviously don't need to discuss whether or not they "suck"...please!
I think this tour is going to be the best of all time. It's no secret that Trey was a hardcore heroin addict by the end of their run, and it showed in the incredibly sloppy shitshow (the music, not the mud!) of a festival that was Coventry. I think the new sober Trey will be reminiscent of a clean Stevie Ray Vaughan exploding back on the scene in late 1986. I can't fucking wait to hear him tear it up out there.

Kudos to BV for covering this, and not doing so with a domineering sense of indie rock self-righteousness. The sarcastic Woodstock pic was the perfect amount of flourish. And as to the scoffers of the "inventing the modern festival" comment, hate all you want, but there is more truth to that than most people here know, or care to admit. Maybe "invented" is too strong a word, but they certainly have revolutionized festivals even if their method does not cater to an exact replication (one band, multi-night, multi-set, camping, relative lawlessness, etc.) These guys have been doing it big, and doing it right, since '96.

"And as to the scoffers of the "inventing the modern festival" comment, hate all you want, but there is more truth to that than most people here know, or care to admit."
I've got nothing against Phish, but I have to disagree. By "modern festival" I'm assuming you guys mean Bonneroo and the other multiday shows like it, but Europe and Latin America have been doing these sort of festivals for years. Phish's success at multiday shows probably helped prove these could make money in the states, but they didn't "invent" anything.
Posted by Anonymous | January 9, 2009 7:10 PM
"but Europe and Latin America have been doing these sort of festivals for years. Phish's success at multiday shows probably helped prove these could make money in the states, but they didn't "invent" anything."
All I'm saying is that Phish has heavily influenced the way these festivals are ran here in the states. No one is saying they "invented" the gathering of tens of thousands of people to see live music over a weekend. Let's not be absurd. Phish has had great success at putting on their own festivals and the rest of the festival organizers have taken notice and tried to emulate some of their methods.
Phish has "invented" their own style of festival and to argue to the contrary seems foolish but please feel free to do so.

What is the jam playing on the phish website after you click on enter site? It rocks and I don't recognize the jam.
Posted by Anonymous | January 14, 2009 10:18 AM
The first song on the website is definitely a jam of the song "Free." All of the videos that appear at the top of the website appear to be culled from the festival IT but I could be wrong about that part. There's also jams from "Possum" and "Divided Sky."
