Special guests opening for MATT AND KIM tonight, new album out now, video, stuff...
Santogold looks at Spank Rock (more by Tim Griffin)

Matt & Kim's sold out show at Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight doesn't have any openers listed - just "special guests". The rumor is that there will be at least three openers with one being Spank Rock, so maybe they're just listing it as "special guests" because they know he/they might not show up and then nobody will know the difference.
Matt and Kim's new album Grand was released this week. More tour dates HERE. "Daylight" MP3 HERE. "Daylight" video below...

Mountain & Dew.

Matt and Kim seem to have taken every opportunity to sell out that came down the pike. Mountain Dew, Scion, Mini Cooper, lots more. On top of that, they signed to Fader, which is really Cornerstone, a marketing company.
That said, new record is not bad. Too many handclaps and drum machines on most of the songs, but "I wanna" is fucking triumphant and terrific

selling out? what are you, in high school?
the music is the product, unfortunately you are not the only consumer.
i agree completely with your assessment of the album though.
it becomes a bit more complicated reducing the charming simplicity or
even naivete of song craft and replaces it with studio trickery
i think that live performances of the songs will be quite good but the
use of stereo effects, reverb and other trickery takes me out of the
immediacy of the previous works
it's almost like the band is now Matt and Kim and The Record Producer
This would be fine if the album did not suffer from these flourishes, but i think that the album is a bit lesser for it.

if they keep putting on free shows with free booze, they can sell out all they want.
the moutain dew and black swan wine shows were highlights of last year.

my my 5:27, aren't you familiar with Matt and Kim's commercial entanglements. you don't, perhaps, work for the band or their label do you?

I would have been happier if Spank Rock had no-showed last night; his short set left me totally underwhelmed, and only made the waiting before the main set longer. In fact, all of the "special guests" excepting Rude Mechanical Orchestra (who killed it) were pretty close to insufferable. Great energy from Matt & Kim, though, as usual.
