« Jemina Pearl now in NYC w/ new band, recording (near Thurston), played Brooklyn (pics, setlist & a video) | What's going on Monday? (Martin Luther King Day) »

"The Fluid came out hungry. Although they were the first non-Northwestern band to sign to Sub Pop (a cred-worth footnote, if ever there was one), they never achieved the success as their labelmates Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney. There aren't even any Fluid records in print right now! (Their merch tonight was shirts that featured a Ford-like logo for their name.) They reunited for Sub Pop's 20th anniversary fest last year and, from what I heard, came off as surprised at the positive reception they got. Tonight, they played many songs from their classic Roadmouth as well as a favorite of mine, "Cold Outside," from Clear Black Paper. Frontman John Robinson bounded about the stage, though the band seemed more comfortable sticking to the back. Nonetheless, they lived up to their legacy. Now all they need to do is to get their records back in print." [Sadness is Delicious]The Overcasters and Jemina Pearl opened the show Saturday night (1/17) at Music Hall of Williamsburg. The Fluid and The Overcasters also played a show one day earlier at Maxwell's in Hoboken.

The Fluid sounded great. Thurston Moore was there and left in his Volvo parked in front of the venue.

Kim was there as well and neither came with nor sat near nor left with Thurston.

The first non-Northwestern band to be signed to Sub Pop was the Afghan Whigs -- as mentioned on subpop.com:
"Their 1988 debut album Big Top Halloween on their independent record label called Ultrasuede created a buzz in the independent music community, and the band soon signed to Sub Pop of Seattle in 1989, the first non-local band to do so."

I was there to see the Fluid and they were great, but I was also blown away by the Overcasters. That drummer kicks ass!

Sub Pop released Fluid's Clear Black Paper in 1988 (before Afghan Whigs).

It was excellent to get to see The Fluid and Overcasters on the east coast instead of "just" in Denver. They're both incredible bands but they really brought it for both the Williamsburg show and the gig in Hoboken. Cool write up and pictures. Thanks to everyone who got to see the show for being so good to my friends.

Yes, doosh, you got wrong information, even if it was from SP.com.

The Fluid were absolutely amazing in Brooklyn. The first song "Candy" killed! It sounded incredible; thank you Fluid.
