Bruce Springsteen in DC - Jan 18, 2009 (dreamsinred77)
Bruce Springsteen

U2 in DC - Jan 18, 2009 (Travlr)
U2

United in their desire to witness a historic moment, hundreds of thousands of people of all ages and races gathered under the marble gaze of former President Abraham Lincoln.

"It's a chance to be part of living history," said Audrey Lewis, from Virginia, as she waited for President-elect Barack Obama's welcome concert in Washington to begin.

Volunteers manning the entrances said spectators had begun arriving at the National Mall soon after 0600, willing to wait for hours to get the best view possible of Mr Obama, less than 48 hours before his inauguration. They thronged along the sides of the Reflecting Pool leading up to the Lincoln Memorial, where, four decades ago, so many massed to hear the words of Martin Luther King.

The significance of the moment seemed lost on no-one and - despite the line-up of celebrities, Stevie Wonder, Usher, U2's Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Beyonce among them - there was no doubt who was the day's real star.

The loudest cheers of the afternoon rang out first when Mr Obama and his family came down the memorial's steps to the stage, and again when he stepped forward to address the crowds.

"In the course of our history, only a handful of generations have been asked to confront challenges as serious as the ones we face right now," he said. "Our nation is at war. Our economy is in crisis."... [BBC]

HBO is streaming the whole thing one more time at 11:30PM ET/PT tonight/Sunday.

What's so historic about electing a lawyer/politician as President?

who is the bigger racist? idiot #1 or idiot #2?

Posted by Anonymous | January 18, 2009 11:34 PM

Yeah, let's celebrate a president who's going to raise taxes, dodge every single issue pertaining to terrorism, and spend billions of our hard paying tax dollars on greedy companies who put themselves into their own predicaments! Yeah, someone who is merely re-appointing idiots from the Clinton administration, is someone we should be celebrating, cuz that's CHANGE allright!

While he might think he's going to be the next Lincoln, God knows he's merely going to become the next Jimmy Carter. LOL

That being said, ROMNEY for president, 2012!!!!

"god I love this place sometimes, the idiot pool on Brooklynvegan never ceases to amaze me."

Because people have different opinions? I have no problems (ok, well a few) for people liking certain bands because it is trendy, but voting for politicians/decision-makers just because it's trendy to do is downright scary.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 12:14 AM

Really? Carter was THAT bad? Clinton was bad? Surpluses, economy never stronger... yeah that's something I don't want to see again.

Go away, stupid democrat.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 12:43 AM

seriously, this country really should have kept the republicans in power. things have been going so well recently. from the economy to the way we have been spreading democracy all over...to the way that the justice department is now running. one could not expect things to be much better. to top it off bush clearly has the backing of the party AND the american people.

that is what amazes me about this election - that the republicans lost despite such strong proof of their superior governance.

sometimes it is hard to understand politics.

"seriously, this country really should have kept the republicans in power. things have been going so well recently. from the economy to the way we have been spreading democracy all over.."

That's funny, how quickly we forget how the senate took the democrat majority two years ago, right around the time we started going into the shitter.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 1:21 AM

"also bono was a total tool"

U2 = shitty music for simpletons who think it's "hi-brow" to listen to something that isn't American (but clearly should be as their shit is an embarrassment to Ireland, as well as the UK for being an adjacent island)

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 1:23 AM

leave it to the liberals to dismiss every opinion that doesn't coincide with their own.

you know who else did that? the nazis.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 1:36 AM

when the fuck did brooklynvegan become Drudge Report?

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 1:55 AM

That pic of everyone dressed up in jackets and hats is great, doesn't look like the temperature out there is very high even though all the liberal fucktards complain about silly things like "global warming".

You silly little liberals have fun, us republicans will take your government back over in 4 years much like Reagan/Carter in 1980. You just watch.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 2:10 AM

All Republicans are disgusting trash. Fact.

Bono's singing actually sounded good; it was when he was going for the "spoken not sung" parts he started to lose it.

Posted by dave | January 19, 2009 10:06 AM

Americans, not Irish, on THIS day.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 10:12 AM

"that is what amazes me about this election - that the republicans lost despite such strong proof of their superior governance."

You are clueless. Yes, Obama is pretty much all sizzle and no bacon (when will he finally announce some concrete plans?!?) but please don't tell me Republicans did/can-do a better job. Sure, they did very well on the taxation front, but the Iraq war was a failure. Too much of our resources went to a useless war.

Bush won in 2004 with a simple "you are with us or against us" and no plans.

Obama won in 2008 with "hope / change" and no plans.

We need to stop electing politicians simply because of a catch phrase. I guess this is the Reality TV world we live in.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 10:25 AM

got to love the republicans on BV. W was one of the worst presidents and you wonder why the dems are in power now? then tell us he is going to be as bad as Carter? I'll take a Carter presidency of the crap we have had for the past 8 years.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 10:40 AM

too bad they couldn't drop a neutron bomb over DC yesterday. would have been worth it to take out Bono and Springsteen.

Posted by toecutter69 | January 19, 2009 11:02 AM

The greatest band in the world put on a great performance in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Bono and co. were on form and ther stars of the show yesterday!

Posted by Loop | January 19, 2009 11:32 AM

Wow, even Most Republicans treat Bush as a pariah. There have been NO reasons to support his during term. Also, I am not liberal, I am a political independent. I sense the left side of the intellectual bell curve is posting in full force today...

Posted by adam | January 19, 2009 11:41 AM

bono is such a fucking douche. he needs to just disappear. u2 fucking blows.

@10:25 AM: Not that it's relevant to your point, but I want to point out that in 2004, John Kerry came close to winning Ohio and with it, the electoral vote (but not the popular vote).

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 12:09 PM

Hipsters suck.

Back in 2003.

"@10:25 AM: Not that it's relevant to your point, but I want to point out that in 2004, John Kerry came close to winning Ohio and with it, the electoral vote (but not the popular vote)."

Yes, and even Obama only got barely 52% of the popular vote. Hardly a resounding win. Obama is better than McCain, but not by much.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 12:23 PM

"Republicans are disgusting trash. Fact."

Go away, stupid democrat.

"Obama is better than McCain"

LOL...B.O. is better all right, he wants to raise taxes, has no clear strategy with how to handle Iraq and a resurging Al Queda, reward laziness and mediocrity in America and punish the successful (it's the American way, isn't it?), has a completely unfeasible plan become entirely dependent on alternative energy resources (haha good luck with that one, oh yeah apparently it creates jobs too, let's kill two birds with one stone). McCain and Bush are people who make decisions that they know is best for their country, while BO is going to make a decision based on what's "popular".

It's funny how BO wants to help out the poor yet spent millions of dollars on an extravagant train ride from Philly to DC last saturday.

The only reason he was elected was entirely because of the "hype" the liberal media (CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, ABC, etc) gave him, and using reporters like Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson to make Sarah Palin (who's son with down syndrome could run this country better than BO) look like a complete moron. Oh, let's not forget about ACORN. LOL

Oh yeah, for all you music folks out there, let's not forget about Joe Biden and how he passed the Rave Act in 2003- which is straight up responsible for the decline in the dance music scene in America.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 5:56 PM

A lot of companies are declaring bankruptcy and demanding bailout money, but not Kool-Aid, they've been enjoying record profits and prosperity over the course of the last five months!

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 6:52 PM

"Yes, and even Obama only got barely 52% of the popular vote. Hardly a resounding win."

Obama: 52.7%
McCain: 45.9%
(Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/us_elections_2008/7697829.stm )

A margin of victory of 6.8 percentage points may not be resounding, but it's certainly decisive.

i'm suprised at how many republicans (and democrats) there are reading a blog like brooklynvegan. Shouldn't the indie-hipster types be "too cool" for mainstream politics?

Oh and whoever made the ridiculous comment about "spending millions of dollars" on an "extravagant train ride...

Are you fucking kidding me man, extravagant train ride? It's cheaper than taking a private plane which was the only other option for the man.

Posted by Anonymous | January 19, 2009 10:26 PM

Go suck Dick Cheney's evil prick you smart mother fucker. No one wants to hear your doom and gloom bullshit at this time... you don't know what is going to happen. No one does... fuck off.

He was already in Washington prior to the train ride. The train ride was a stunt.

Posted by Anonymous | January 21, 2009 9:27 AM

The train ride was very appropriate considering everyone that jumped on the Obama bandwagon without even knowing his policies.
