The Soft Pack

Plenty of bands opt for unprintable names -- last year was a great one for **** Buttons, ****** Jeans and ****** ** -- but what about an untenable one? Really, how far could a group calling itself the Muslims get in this day and age?

"It's just a band name," the guitarist Matty McLoughlin told an interviewer early last year. "It isn't meant to describe us or associate us with anything." But by the end of the year, the band had switched to the Soft Pack. "We were sick of it," he later said. "Sick of questions, jihad comments, basically everything about it. It became a total nuisance."

It did its job, though, helping this Los Angeles-via-San Diego mope-punk outfit break through to wider attention last year. At the Mercury Lounge on Friday night, some fans still shouted "Muslims!" as the band took the stage. And the band wasn't above teasing a bit, twiddling through a few bars of "Lawyers, Guns and Money," by Warren Zevon, who passed away in 2003, before the singer Matt Lamkin deadpanned, "We were better before we died." [NY Times]

For The Soft Pack, Saturday night (1/17) at Union Pool was their 2nd NYC show in a row. For Those Darlins, it was the third. Pictures and setlists from both sets below...

How can I date the middle darling?

I have a job, thin, smart (1425 on my GRE: went to Norte Dame; applying to Columbia Grad School--not too sure if I'll get in) friends said I am funny. I broke up with this girl not too long ago, but it was her not me. I can give you her number as a reference. I have good bone structure and love to make you smile. Let me know.

xoxo

p.s. what's is you name?

oh, and I live with my parents.

not sure if a gal in those darlins would be into you "preppy". notre dame? columbia? if only vampire weekend had a female member.... perhaps if you listed off you favorite country album and brand of rye whiskey you would have a shot.

anon 4:49 . . . i think you can definitely have the one on the left. then, you can work your way right.

Why is the dude from fall out boy there?

Posted by Anonymous | January 20, 2009 5:07 PM

also the fact that you went to "norte dame" as opposed to "notre dame" might cost you a few points...

I went home with the waitress the way I always do.

It was limp and lame.

"1425 on my GRE"

Isn't the max score 2400? (800*3)

Hey BV, the Browns also played (and were awesome). Get yr head out your ass and start actually going to shows instead of re-hashing swill from promotion companies who pay you to write about their bands.

Zevon is dead jokes are always rip roaring funny.

great show, super fun. soft pack played three new songs. heard their merc show was lackluster, but not this one. the after-show dance party was also a blast.

its guy eppel!

notre dame is for ted leo, not some puss who lives with his parents.

plus the girl in the middle totally digs me. i went to community college then public college. i am heavy drinker, girl friend beater, sometimes cocaine feels good to me and i fart...she's all over me, son.

GRE is out of 1600. I just took it a few months ago. I could lie about my score, but it wasn't good. So I got a 1600.

Sorry I didn't get the Browns... heard they were good. The L wasn't running and the buses replacing it were delayed. I took a cab and got there as quickly as I could, but walked in just as they (the Browns) wrapped their last song. Pretty packed room, making it damn near impossible to get to a shooting spot before they finished.

And Those Darlins RAWKED. Funny, witty, clever, and a lot of fun. Yeah, cute as buttons too.

the Soft Pack was good... hadn't seen them before. Hope to shoot them again with a little more light... :)

As far as the 're-hashing swill' bit - c'mon dude: there were at least 15-20 shows Saturday. Probably can't have writers/reviewers at all of them. I don't know how many ppl write here, but having 20 on a single night seems unlikely :)

the browns suck
and the soft pack at the mercury were great
and those darlins are amazing
