Patti Smith says Happy New Year @ Bowery Ballroom - Dec 31, 2008 (Houari B)
Patti Smith

"Smith was in fine form and good spirits, joking and cajoling the audience, even telling them her old birthday (she was born on Dec 30th) stories. Her jokes crackle with electricity as much as the music, as the band rip through Kimberly (a loving tribute to her sister, who was in the audience), Dancing Barefoot, Pissing in a River and the chestnuts, Because the Night and People Have the Power.

Since 1998, Smith has been keeping a three-night year-end tradition at New York's Bowery Ballroom and tonight, Smith puts everyone in the right frame of mind about 2009, the Chinese astrological Year of the Ox, by reminding the audience that it's going to be a year of putting their noses to the grind and working hard." I wish I could get more excited about any of this.

The crowd does nothing but stand and stare. Older fans are now coming just to observe. Too old and passive. Needs to be revitalized in the worst way. So boring...pathetic and nothing like the old days when Patti was daring and had an edge. Band is too "professional" and creative flow with a responsive audience is dead. People need to wake up before they have "the power"...

i'm a big fan, and i have to agree with David S- 912am. she can stand to rock it out a bit more, even at her age i know these rockNrollers have it in them. it can be done gracefully but it's got to have fire.

Well, David S and the anonymous people on here.. in 2008 I attended 13 gigs, 10 with the band [NYC Bowery Ballroom, Mallorca Spain, Molde & Bergen Norway, Stockholm Sweden, Moscow Russia] . 2 Patti acoustic all by herself [Copenhagen Danemark, after screenings of "Dream of life], and 1 gig with the family + Lenny Kaye at "the MET".

You say: more fire, rock it out a bit more, the audience is too old, and Patti doesn´t have an edge anymore.

I disagree with you! She does have an edge, she rocks it out like there´s no tomorrow, and the audience is great. You probably haven´t been standing outside a venue, freezing your balls off, for 6 hr so you can be infront of the stage, if you had done that, you would have had a different experience I bellieve, there are sparks flying from the stage to the people, but you gotta get into it yourself. So blame yourself and not Patti please!
