Matisyahu disco dreidel

"Matisyahu deployed what may be the only large, mirrored, rotating dreidel in show business -- a Jewish answer to a disco ball -- at Webster Hall on Sunday night, the first night of Hanukkah." [NY Times]
today in NYC
* DANCE
* Les Paul @ Iridium
* Matisyahu @ Rockwood Music Hall (don't ask me)
* Bird Show (Ben Vida) & White/Light @ Cake Shop

If Matisyahu interests you at all, this recent interview/article at The Jewish Daily Forward is pretty interesting. Matisyahu recently completed his 8-show Hanukkah run at Music Hall of Williamsburg and Webster Hall. Rockwood Music Hall is significantly smaller than those venues. Rockwood Music Hall is significantly smaller than pretty much any other venue.

Mono have a NYC show coming up.

Crystal Castles played Music Hall of Williamsburg on New Years Eve.

Talibam! was playing at midnight on New Years Eve @ Surreal Estate. Video below...

What else?

Matisyahu showed up to the Disco Biscuits show on New Years, he preformed with the band during the 3rd set, he only stayed on for a few minutes.

It was a dark day on the Great White Way.

The final curtain fell Sunday on the Tony Award-winning hit musical "Hairspray" and eight other Broadway shows.

"Miracles like 'Hairspray' don't happen every day," Harvey Fierstein said from the stage of the Neil Simon Theatre at the curtain call of the show's packed final performance.

Fierstein, who originated the gender-bender role of Edna Turnblad, returned to reprise it for the show's last months on Broadway.

"It's been an adventure and a pleasure," he added. "I hope someday something like this happens to you."

Co-star Marissa Jaret Winokur, the original Tracy, was wistful in a backstage interview.

"This is one of those things that should never end," she said.

The lights also went out on other popular shows, including "Young Frankenstein" and "Grease."

at what point does Matisyahu become clearly insulting to Jewish people?

he's obviously phony.

Then again, people still buy into Gogol Bordello, who are themselves phony "Eastern Europeans." FYI, they're just hippee dudes from Burlington, Vermont.

I suppose that if your audeince are the sorts of people who get off on gimmicks, then there's not a lot "critical thinking" about the facade that you have to worry about.

"at what point does Matisyahu become clearly insulting to Jewish people?"

Shortly before becoming an obvious insult to everyone else?

Phew, there weren't enough Matisyahu shows.

9 in the last month in NYC/NJ just didn't fit my needs, I need a tenth!
