CLL PHN LCKN 09, put on a not-so-secret cell phone experiment Monday (1/26) at the new 92Y Tribeca venue in... Tribeca. The event, organized by LVHRD, was a group experiment encouraging socializing via text messaging. You might be saying what the hell? This instructional video, below, will help in understanding the events of the night.

Each attendee received a protective Mobiguard white jumpsuit (like something out of the Beastie Boys "Intergalactic" video) with an assigned four digit number and instructions on how to register their bio to their number. Once registered, you could text-message-socialize by texting other people's suit numbers to retrieve their bios. You could also use the system to send messages to other party-goers, all of which were then projected in a scrolling fashion on screens near the bar and stage. Yacht came on sometime around 10:30pm and performed for about 60 minutes.

The fact that this guy can make it in this "scene" scares the shit out of me....

Were any of you there when he opened for LCD Soundsystem at Studio B? One of the worst sets of music I have ever had to endure for an opening act...is he some gimmick or people really like the music? To each his own, but this stuff was just painful....

It was actually pretty rad and YACHT was infinitely better than he was back during his "popular" days.

Dewar's you're really missing your target audience with events like these. Mountain Dew or PBR would be a better choice for a sponsor

Posted by imkoreansowhat | January 29, 2009 12:54 AM

"so... what is the point of this again?"

The point is to network and meet other professionals, something you jobless ones wouldn't know anything about.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 1:01 AM

what's the point of anything, really?

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 8:06 AM

@ 1:01am

network? at a fucking show? i hope you choke to death on your vastly superior world view.

i heard that the romans did something like this just before their empire collapsed. if there is a merciful god in heaven he will smite us all quickly.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 10:10 AM

hey 1:01am,

i would love to see your severed head on a stick. then lightly barbecued, and finally, cut into bite-sized chunks, which i will then wash down with a nice cold one.

pompous much?

This seems pretty neat to me. More like a social experiment than anything else.

Posted by Joe | January 29, 2009 10:56 AM

no thank you, high-concept partying. this doesn't look fun at all.

the dork who texted those stream-of-conscious bob dylan lyrics was probably awfully satisfied with himself when they appeared on the screen, though.

Posted by andrew. | January 29, 2009 11:45 AM

what happened to talking?

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 11:46 AM

This might be the most retardedest thing I've ever seen...and I kind of wish I'd been there.

Posted by kalvin | January 29, 2009 12:32 PM

It doesn't have to be this way!

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 1:31 PM

yeah I saw that Yacht show at Studio B, opening for LCD. Fraid so. Worst. This couldn't be worse...but looks close.

Posted by Anonymous | January 29, 2009 1:48 PM
