Yo Yo Ma didn't actually kill it - Izhak Perlman & friends played the Inauguration to taped music

Millions of viewers heard a recording of the dulcet tones played by a celebrated quartet of musicians at President Barack Obama's inauguration rather than the notes the group actually played. That may also explain why Yo Yo was using his normal cello instead of the high-tech, carbon-fiber one the NY Times reported he would be using.Carole Florman, a spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, says the weather was too cold for the instruments to stay in tune. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Izhak Perlman, pianist Gabriella Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill made the decision on Inauguration Day Tuesday to use an audio tape of their performance that they had laid down two days earlier.
Florman says the musicians "very insistant on playing live until it became clear that it would be too cold," making it impossible for the instruments to hold tune. People sitting near them could hear the musicians play, but their instruments were not amplified. [AP]

What's up Brooklyn Vegan hipster shitheads?! None of you care to comment on something other than your flavor of the hour indie-crap-rock-oops-I-can't-tune-my-guitar band?! Shocking...

Hey it's late man, I can't hate 24 hours a day.
That said, Itzhak Perlman has fat fingers and Yo Yo Ma is the most overrated cellist since Bernhard Romberg. Grow a pair and play in the cold, pussies!

anyone ever heard izhak perlman's son's crappy band something for rockets. This post reminded me of them and I checked their website and they haven't updated since 2005
hmmm.
That said, you gotta DEAL with the weather bitch. No prerecordings, if it's too cold don't play
what is the point?

i'm sort of shocked at the ignorance of this post, but perhaps i am reading it the wrong way. anybody who has played an instrument- strings, brass, woodwind, even percussion- would be totally understanding in this situation. "grow a pair" and play it live despite the inherent dissonance promised? for the most important inauguration of our time? some people never fail to disappoint

Dan Deacon would have played no matter how cold it was. He's even played wet--remember when he rocked it in Nietzsche's Bathtub, mutherfukkers?

I would like to apologize for this post. obviously this guy knows nothing of this site or the posts you will find on it. Such "holier than thou" attitude is greatly permitted here, but also mindless posts are also welcomed.

you don't even think anything of it when you see it. but then you hear it was prerecorded and you can completely tell. song is still awesome.

They should go on SNL!

@ 2:34:
I'm a musician, and I think there are more people who would give a shit if they were told it was recorded than there are who would have noticed that it had been out of tune. This was a bullshit excuse just so they didn't have to have numb freezy fingers and fuck up. Anything would have been better than Elisabeth Alexander's broken-up, awkwardly delivered speech she called a poem.

seems like they could have put them in a heated area

Ma, yo! YO!
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 8:52 AM
i understand the reason for not being able to play that day, but then why do it at all? the new administration is already deceiving the public, on day 1.
also, the performance kind of didn't fit in anyway. Obama was acting like he was enjoying it, but it was obvious that he didn't give a shit.

if sigur ros could do it in iceland, i think yo yo should have given it a shot. who cares if it was a bit out of tune.

no, it doesn't

So it was kind of like an Animal Collective concert.

@ 2:41. If Yo Yo Ma tried to pull that shit at Nietzsche's Bathtub, he would get his ass kicked.

laptops never go out of tune. they should have got gt, dd, m83, the field, and kraftwerk. and i know the latter three are not americans.

When the Flaming Lips do it, the hipsters love it. Some classical quartet does it, they get hated on. Sheep on!
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 10:56 AM
yea i agree w/the person who said it's unfortunate they couldnt come up w/ some kind of heated space for them. im no hater, just think it wouldve been even more moving & awesome had it actually been live.

So what the hell was the point of that carbon-fiber cello then?
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 11:33 AM
yo yo ma: i'd hit it
Posted by Anonymous | January 23, 2009 11:44 AM
agreed. there's a lot of bars with those big kerosene radiant heat stalks so you can smoke ciggies outside in the winter, and jesus those things are powerful. i would think a couple of those could afford a level of comfortability sufficient enough to play an instrument.
if you wanna know about dudes wrecking shop in the DC winter, check out this video:
