Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment are excited to announce the initial lineup for the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The eighth annual four-day camping and music festival will be held on June 11 - 14 on the same beautiful 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville. Every year Bonnaroo seeks to make history by offering unique and exclusive performances by rock's greatest legends as well as its most significant newcomers. A full list of confirmed acts follows, and more will be announced in the coming weeks. The final Bonnaroo 2009 lineup will total over 120 bands and over 20 comedians performing on 13 stages over four days. Tickets go on sale exclusively through www.bonnaroo.com on Saturday, February 7 at 12:00 PM Eastern.
As rumored, Bruce Springsteen (who just played the Superbowl Halftime show) and Phish (who just had some trouble selling tickets to other shows) are headlining this year's Bonnaroo. Nine Inch Nails (who played Lollapalooza last year), Beastie Boys, David Byrne (who has two shows coming up at Radio City), Wilco, Al Green, Erykah Badu, TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (who are also playing Coachella), Andrew Bird (who just played Carnegie Hall), The Decemberists, Bon Iver, Animal Collective (who are very popular right now), Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Santogold, Grizzly Bear (who have a new album coming out), St. Vincent, Ted Leo, Crystal Castles, and many others are also on the bill according to the now-officially announced initial lineup.

Coachella announced their initial lineup less than a week earlier.

Metallica played Bonnaroo in 2008. Metallica played NY & NJ this past weekend.

Crystal Castles will be the best show of the festival.

anyone know where I can get those Metallica vids from last year?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 1:02 AM

Wish they substituted Wayne for Beastie Boys and Arcade Fire for NIN... then it would be mental.

But this is a good lineup...

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 1:09 AM

don't forget MGMT. yeah pretty awesome line up I agree, too bad they dont release Lollapalooza lineup now so you could pick which fest to go to, I dont think I can go to both.

"arcade fire would be awesome.
fleet foxes?????bonnaroo is right up their alley."

I am confident that Fleet Foxes will be one of the prominent artists in the first round of artist additions in the next few months. Of all festivals (besides maybe Sasquatch on their home turf), I agree that Bonnaroo is totally up their alley.

This is a FANTASTIC lineup.

APW is going to rule this year!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 10:05 AM

holy crap. this lineup is sick. i think the crystal castles pic was posted solely for the fact that she is being fisted in it.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 10:09 AM

Crystal Castles? It should be funny to see how many water bottles come flying at the stage for that set.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 10:14 AM

i don't get it. i don't see that this lineup is any good.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 10:36 AM

I hope Crystal Castles is on at the same time as the "Superjam" it will keep hippie contingent to the minimum.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 10:41 AM

not impressed

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 11:01 AM

add radiohead and MMJ and this will be the lineup to end all lineups

Posted by jack | February 3, 2009 11:29 AM

Suck it, Coachella! Holy crap this is worth camping for. If they added Fleet Foxes and Arcade Fire my head would explode.

And a little shout out to the best band most people haven't heard of yet, but will be loving soon, The Low Anthem! Bonnaroo, baby! Woooooo!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 11:54 AM

"add radiohead and MMJ and this will be the lineup to end all lineups"

oh really? how about we add pavement and led zepplin and lez zepplin and big star and jay-z and a crystal castles acoustic set? what now!?! what now!?!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 11:55 AM

^^
I like the way you think, kid. Wanna start a festival?

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 12:02 PM

i have officially died and gone to tennessee heaven.

this line up will most likely blow every other summer festival line up out of the water. can't wait to see the additions they announce over the next few months!

Posted by Lindsay | February 3, 2009 12:02 PM

Is this really necessary? 3 sets?!

Bonnaroo will be Springsteen's only North American festival of the year, as well as the only festival on the reunited Phish's 2009 itinerary. According to Jonathan Mayers, president of festival co-producer Superfly, Phish will play two distinct shows on the Bonnaroo main stage on two separate nights: a two-set performance and an additional late-evening set.

Arcade Fire is decent, but their live show is mediocre. I saw them last year with LCD soundsytem and LCD soundsystem stole the show.

Now LCD would be a great addition to the line up.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 12:26 PM

SICK LINE UP! I'm just waiting for some Boyz 2 Men action, INSANE!

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 12:52 PM

bonnaroo = hot as balls

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 12:59 PM

Is it possible to have a Bonnaroo without My Morning Jacket? i dont believe it is! i went in 2006 and i think even tho im broke as hell right now ima try and come up with 500 bucks (250 for tickets, 250 for food/gas) cuz this lineup is better than an orgasm

nice Lolla '08 lineup video rip-off, Roo. Super creative with the guitar string Wilco drawing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGNYkjiFq9I

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 2:11 PM

Agreed if MMJ replaced one of Phish's 3 sets (cool enough to see Phish play, but three times in four days?) this would be the sickest line-up of any festival in recent memory. That being said, there's at least 20 bands there I'd pay money to see on their own, let alone all together.

Posted by panopticon | February 3, 2009 2:27 PM

I f*cking hate festivals.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 2:35 PM

Man, 2:25 beat me to it.

Posted by toomanybandsoutsideitshot | February 3, 2009 3:23 PM

"I f*cking hate festivals"

Have fun sitting at home pickin' ya boogas and flckin' em while where at Bonnaroo partying balls!

SICK LINEUP.

We'll see if Lolla can contend.

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 3:28 PM

Ehhhhhh doesn't blow away Coachella. They're about even, honestly. Leonard Cohen probably pushes Coach ahead in my book. Springsteen is probably more FUN than McCartney but when Paul starts up with the Beatles songs no one's possible setlist can't compete.

Posted by zik | February 3, 2009 5:50 PM

If you don't think this line up is amazing you got fucking problems, the boss will bring out all the rarities, phish is the essential jam band for this festival, NIN is the greatest live act in the fucking world, and everyone else is really phenomenal too, I will eventually go to this some day

Posted by Steve | February 3, 2009 7:42 PM

shot closest spot to the boob painting tent

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 9:43 PM

sts9? I know they've played before

Posted by Anonymous | February 3, 2009 11:33 PM

all you need to know is phish, 3 sets bitches. if you have any common sense you will realize the party will be at the campgrounds during the boss. go suck leonard cohen off at coachella and we will have fun gettin down at phish.

Posted by Anonymous | February 17, 2009 7:10 PM

phish will not have 3 sets. they will have 2 sets. 1 is a 2 set headliner(in other words they will play, take a break, and have an encore like every other headliner) and also a late night set.

Posted by Anonymous | March 22, 2009 10:04 PM

Phish, LOL

Talk about an awesome darn lineup! I'm so psyched to watch clips of these --especially Bruce Springsteen who is still amazing as ever. There's going to be a Springsteen special on tonight from 8-11 of the making of Bruce's album and their Live NYC concert. oh oh and a Loaded episode of them as well! here's where I found out: http://fusefest.fuse.tv/a/home

Posted by Rachel | June 11, 2009 5:47 PM

awesome! thank you for the heads up BV. pumped about this. love the MHW and I think Chan will probably be looser and more laid back in the smaller venue without all the pressure of winning over the big audiences at Apollo.

Posted by Sexy Lingerie | September 20, 2009 1:56 PM

Wow, they've got a whole lot of good artists on that list!
