Dirty Projectors

"Brooklyn, NY based Dirty Projectors are set to release 'Bitte Orca', their 5th full-length album and first for Domino Records on June 9, 2009. The album was recorded in Portland, OR and Brooklyn, NY in 2008 and will be available on CD, LP & digital. David Longstreth formed Dirty Projectors in 2002 and the group now consists of Angel Deradoorian, Amber Coffman, Brian Mcomber and David as principal members. Lead single 'Stillness Is The Move' will precede the album on April 21st in North America and will be available on 12" and digital, with b-sides and a remix by Lucky Dragons.

Dirty Projectors will also be introducing an expanded 6 member live lineup with the addition of bassist Nat Baldwin and vocalist Haley Dekle for a number of dates this winter and spring.

No new NYC dates yet, but recent Dirty Projectors shows at South Street Seaport (8/15/08) and Brooklyn Masonic Temple (12/1/08) both caught the band in top form, performing new, harder edged material (albeit without its new members). More recently, the band also played as part of the "Laurie & Friends" gig at BAM (1/21). Four SXSW shows, and other dates listed below.

On May 5th, DP vocalist Angel Deradoorian (or just Deradoorian as the project is called) is set to release her first solo recording, a spacey, dream-pop EP titled Mind Raft, on Love Pump United.

And a few weeks ago(2/17), Dirty Projectors kicked off benefit comp Dark Was the Night with a killer David Byrne collaboration, posted above. Catch David Byrne twice this weekend at Radio City Music Hall.

Releasing the new DP album is Domino Records, home to Animal Collective, Franz Ferdinand, and Juana Molina (who's playing tonight, 2/27 at LPR).

Dirty projectors are an amazing live act. Hope the new album is on par with their live shows, their previous studio efforts somehow fell short if capturing the magic. Glad to hear nat is reuniting with them.

I remember a while ago there being some news-ish sort of rumors about there being two Dirty Projectors albums out this year--this new one for Domino and one for Dead Oceans (fulfilling their contract with them or something) of new music inspired by their Rise Above experience.

Any validity to that?

Yea I remember hearing that too. The more the better, I say.

The first time I saw Dirty Projectors, it was in a Todd P space and it sounded awful. They went on like 4 hours later than they were supposed to, held up the show, and the frontman whined from the stage about how people didn't care about them.

For years, I couldn't figure out why people liked this awful, awful band. I had the memory of that terrible show burned into my head.

I eventually ended up seeing them again at the Masonic Temple show. This time they sounded like Dave Matthews Band, which still wasn't my cup of tea, but, hey, I guess I can understand why people like those type of bands.

I have to agree with 4:43. I don't get what people see in this band. I mean, I get the fact its supposed to be this deconstructionist, orchestral pop thing, but i just find it to be pretentious and boring, and it really just sounds to me like a rich kid with too much time on his hands. Although there are a lot of rich kids with too much time on their hands that don't bother trying to do something artsy at least. I guess that's one good thing I could say about this band.

"his time they sounded like Dave Matthews Band,"

Dumbest thing I've read in a while.

Their live act was pretty different a few years back, wasn't it? They're really tight in the current lineup, most impressive live indie rock band I've seen in the last couple of years. The albums haven't quite lived up to that so far in my opinion but I'm looking forward to this new one a lot.

absolutely amazing live band
each member, in his/her own right, is a very talented musican

Is this going to happen again? The Brooklyn Vegan "Are the Dirty Projectors great or terrible?" debate?

My vote is for: best band alive. I've seen them many times over the years and they've never disappointed, and I for one think the records are excellent. Especially the last three.

4:43 should stop eating so much shit all the time, it's starting to go to his brains

Posted by Anonymous | February 28, 2009 3:32 PM

@ 5:05

I don't think there are that many moments on Rise Above that you can call orchestral pop. In fact, aside from the concept of the album, I don't see where you get "deconstructionist" either. At its core, it's still rock music with tight playing and emotive singing. Justice and MGMT are rich kids with too much time on their hands; these guys are just fucking great musicians doing something no one else is.

Its called progressive art you douchebags. If the most mainstream thing you listen to or consciously aware of is like Fleet Foxes or whatever band is the running standard on this board for "crap I'm not sure who cares about because I have little interaction with young college students" then progressive popular music is probably not for you. Maybe you should try some Phish. I've heard they're esepcially unpopular.
