Leonard Cohen - 2009 Tour Dates & Beacon Theater setlist
this picture is not from the Beacon show, but it looks similar

February 19, 2009 - New York, NY - As Leonard Cohen took to the historic Beacon Theatre stage Thursday in New York for his first stateside performance in fifteen years, AEG Live announced a run of North American engagements including nights in New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles and a sunset performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. Tickets for some dates go on sale to the public beginning Friday, February 27th, 2009 with additional on sale dates following on March 2nd and March 9th, 2009...There is nothing negative to say about Leonard Cohen's legendary 3+ hour performance at the restored Beacon Theatre last night. The man has stamina. You would never know he is 74 years old. His band (listed above) were all amazing, and Leonard is such a gentleman - especially when it came to introducing each and every person that made the show possible, including all those on stage with him. I don't think I ever experienced so many standing ovations during the course of one show.As he has been throughout his most recent tour, Mr. Cohen will be joined by Sharon Robinson and the Webb Sisters - who have wowed crowds around the world with their rich and complementary background vocals. Also joining Mr. Cohen on stage are Roscoe Beck (bass, vocals), Neil Larsen (keyboards & Hammond B3 accordion), Bob Metzger (electric, acoustic & pedal steel guitar), Javier Mas (bandurria, laud, archilaud, 12 string acoustic guitar), Rafael Gayol (drums, percussion), Dino Soldo (sax, clarinet dobro - keys).
"We are delighted to finally bring this phenomenal tour to the USA. Having spent the last 12 months touring the World, from Romania to Australia from London to Rome, America will now get the opportunity to see the show that has enthralled over 750,000 concert goers across the World to date. Not one to miss lightly," commented Rob Hallett, President of International Touring / AEG Live."AEG Live is honored to continue this extraordinary journey with Mr Cohen. Now it's time to take North America," added Elliott Lefko, Vice President, Goldenvoice/AEG Live...
..Additionally NPR will broadcast select songs from Leonard Cohen's Beacon Theatre performance at www.npr.org on Wednesday, February 25.
Leonard's next New York City date is May 16th at Radio City Music Hall. All tour dates and last night's set list (stay tuned for pictures), below...

Absolutely amazing show!

the "poem" is actually a song called "a thousand kisses deep"...and they technically closed with "whither thou goest," the acapella thing they do...

this looks unbelieveable...I can't believe he did 3 hours. Hope I can get some Radio City tickets

truly amazing...musicians like that come around once every 50 years.

Suzanna was a highlight for me, as was Everybody Know/In My Secret Life back to back. I thought Hallelujah was kind of understated and I guess it's good he didn't make it THE focus of the night. One thought that occured to me was boy does this guy put Dylan to shame or what? Actually he puts most guys his age to shame. And his banter seemed genuine, touching at times, and yet humorous as well, like when he joked about the current economic depression saying boy it could get really bad, as bad as Y2K...

amazing show. i stumbled out a side exit after the last ovation and found myself standing right behind Mr. Cohen. he was so gracious and kind and even signed my poster. so great.

Great show I'm told. But I bet those who paid $750 each are embarrassed as hell...knowing we'll all see him for $75 on the upcoming tour. Everyone else knew a US tour would be announced at this show. Now it's time for them to try and reconcile in their minds why $750/ticket made sense. Good luck. Bottomline: you're fools.

do we have any other adjectives besides "amazing"?
Posted by Anonymous | February 20, 2009 9:20 AM
dancetastic

I have a negative, the song "Democracy" should have been named "Anarchy", and change the lyric accordingly- "We are bringing anarcy to USA...".
As it is now it was a pretty schmaltzy number...

During the chorus of "So Long Marianne" his voice momentarily reverted to the old, classic Leonard Cohen voice you can hear on his first few albums. This was incredible for a couple of reasons: first of all I didn't know he was still capable of sounding like that, and second of all it made me realize who it was I was actually watching on the stage. Leonard Cohen, the legend. I strongly suggest seeing him if you can.

I was at the Beacon show. Ehh. He was decent (let's be honest, he's a centenarian now so he can't shake those hips like he used to) but not once did he play any of his classic electro bangers. Not once.
What gives, Lenny?

Photos at pitchfork too.
Posted by Anonymous | February 20, 2009 2:34 PM
do you really think his voice compares to how he used to sound?

"What time does Leonard Cohen open for Daft Punk?"
you are a pretty funny douchebag
Posted by Anonymous | February 20, 2009 3:46 PM
I think lot of people were saying how great his voice sounded, almost too good? I mean it was there. I put it down to the fact he didnt really use it a lot for many years that he took off from music.

It was by far the best concert I have ever seen.Easily put Theodorakis concert into 2nd place.

I saw the great man, for that he truly is, twice in 2008 at the O2 in London, he brought the house down the first time round, even non-fans in corporate hospitality were really impressed. The guy can still sing and play amazingly well.
I take my hat of to the big LC , he is amongst the immortals of song, along with Dylan, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Like a fine wine he has only improved with age.

Saw LC last night in Dallas (Grand Prairie)... awesome show! Phenomenal voice after all these years. Yep, he's looking/moving older (aren't we all?) but his voice is still incredible.
And no Milli-Vanilli schtik going on, he's in-n-out speaking over the live mike while singing so it's clear his incredible voice is still there!
If you can do it, go check out the show -- this may be your last chance to see a living legend while he's still with us, so pay up and go see him while you can!

I am really excited about going to Radio City in May to see him. It is going to be great!
Posted by Loop | April 5, 2009 7:29 AM
I was at the show in Victoria BC. I am not a big LC fan, but it was a truly amazing performance. A three and a half-hour show, and I didn't notice the time pass. I have seen some big shows in Vancouver and Seattle in the last ten years, and I have to say Mr. Cohen is tops.
Go. Run. See him while you can.

Awesome, incredible, one of the most magnificent shows I have EVER seen. L.C. is still top rate, as are all the musicians and technical staff involved. What a gift, after 30 years of loving his songs and poems, to actually see the guy. In person, stepping lively! Showmanship and sincerity: HELLO!!! Know I'm raving but this was the best!!!
