M Ward & Vivian Girls @ The Apollo Theater - pics & setlist
photos by Jacob Blickenstaff

"Pretty much agree with everything said. Short setlist for an artist with hours worth of material (albeit a very solid set). Didn't think it came close to touching his Town Hall set 1-2 yrs ago.According to many, last week's M Ward & Vivian Girls show at the Apollo suffered from bad sound. Before another week goes by, here are some pics, and the setlist, from the show...Sound was really rough - the guitar player (the oldest guy in the band) was calling out for level adjustments on almost every song. The piano also sounded very strange." [Anonymous]

total let down. sound was shit. set was short. staff at that place sucks, i tried to take 1 photo of the girls dancing in front during the last song and some lady basically knocked my phone out of my hands like i was a 5 year old stealing candy. i'll never go back to that place again, regardless of who's playing. and now have zero interest in seeing him live agian.

Regarding the sound problems. It sounded to my uneducated ear like a speaker had been blown by the previous band - who were playing at a completely stupid volume.
I will say this for the Apollo: those are some comfy-ass seats.

Awful sums up this show - the crowd, sound, set list, length of show, and finally having Oakley Hall as a 'special guest?!' I really wished he would have had Norfolk/Western back him up like they did at Maxwell's and when he opened up for the White Stripes in Coney Island. Nothing will top when he played Maxwell's, the Bowery, and when he toured with MMJ & Dr. Dog. Let's not forget Town Hall!

i've been to two shows at the apollo and i have found the staff to be very polite. perhaps the people who complain about it should re-think the way they carry themselves?

What does the bad sound have to do with the politeness of the Apollo employees? Forgive my ignorance, but I see no correlation.

Thankfully, there's at least one venue in NYC that takes a proactive approach to the jerkoffs who hold their phones up in front of other people's faces to take crappy blurry pictures/videos.
Hey 11:40, maybe you should show a little more respect for the venue, security, and the people with the unfortunate luck of sitting/standing near you.

He could have easily played till 11pm, but decided to end the show at 10:30 instead. It's an honor to be on the apollo stage (and not get booed), yet he didn't make it seem special at all, or acknowledge that the sound was terrible. Very disappointing show overall.

hey 1:24, "show a little more respect for the venue"? what, are you the Keeper of the fucking Apollo? you must be a fucking idiot. so you've never once taken a foto of a performer that you like at a show before? GOD FORBID!!!! that's what cameras are for, asshole. i didn't have to pay for tix (thank god), a friend of mine is in the band, and he had the same exact thing to say about that "venue". the place is a dump with shitty sound and my friend said the house production crew "accidentally" knocked his gear over during sound check.
1:24, get a life.

one of the staff at the apollo was very rude to me and even stepped on my toe!

anon 1:21,
my comment about the staff was in regards to: "staff at that place sucks". you are right, it has nothing to do with sound issues.

"Regarding the sound problems. It sounded to my uneducated ear like a speaker had been blown by the previous band - who were playing at a completely stupid volume."
a band playing "stupidly" loud would not be enough to blow out a PA speaker. If they did then it's the soundguy's fault. he sound be watching the levels.

Posted by Anonymous | February 27, 2009 2:18 PM
you guys only like m. ward because he used to do chan marshall and is 1/2 of she and him

2:04. Cameras are for taking photographs WHEN PERMITTED. If the venue doesn't allow it, and then stops you, its their problem? Too bad they didn't remove you and your attitude from the venue.

vivian girls sucked.
m. ward is fantastic.
i don't like she & him.
who cares about staff at the apollo do they really have
that much to do w/ the experience...you're in your seat, you
watch the show, you leave. bunch of wimps.
i thought the sound of vivian girls sucked - way too loud, and they just suck. every song is noise that sounds the same. awkward.
m. ward sounded good to me!
