"Day off, headed to the beach" - Feb 17, 2009 by Trent Reznor

As people are already talking about, Trent Reznor posted the following letter to NIN's website on Monday...
2.16.09: A note from Trent and a wave goodbye
Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour. The first date has already been announced. Jane's and Nine Inch Nails are both playing Sasquatch in Washington in May.Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.
In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.
Trent
I hope they play NYC. If they do, where? MSG?

Fuck yes. There is no way in hell the Hammy or T5 is big enough for this behemoth bill. I'd say def MSG, possibly some shed venues too. Jones, PNC, Camden, etc. Maybe some love for LI and NJ, too (Nassau, Meadowlands)

A month-long residency @ Mercury Lounge

i feel like bands a lot of times hint at "breaks" and stuff right before they go on tours to sell tix....it's like NIN went on tour last year and are going again so they want people to buy the tix. i'm not saying this to hate on them (i really want to see them live) but i think it's mostly a business move. he'll probably just take a couple years off to write a new album and come back and tour.

APW 09!!!! FTW!!!!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:05 AM
Corporate Rock?
Are you retarded?
The guy gave away and album for free, and it is still available for free.
What corporate musician lets people have his work for free?
Maybe you should just go back to listening to nickelback.

"after all these years reznor still thinks he isn't corporate rock? P.A.T.H.E.T.I.C.

Really?
Google Nine Inch Nails. What he has been doing the last two years might surprise you.

"mabye they will headline a night of APW!!!
APW 09!!!! FTW!!!!!!!"
I know you're only kidding, but has anyone heard anything about APW this year? Is anything going to happen? Or did the inconvenient location, bad layout, unfortunate beer policy, and lackluster lineup do them in?

who exactly booked NIN's tours? what indrastructure sold the tickets? who markets NIN's physical releases? call me retarded all you want :)
Btw I am well aware of his free downloads but are you of the underlying structure of his to still make a living?
Posted by UN:art:IG | February 18, 2009 11:13 AM
MSG fuckers.
1)Because NIN has not played there since the With Teetha tour. For a band that sells out MSG faster then Rod Blago can put his toupe on,the absence of
MSG shows on the last few tours was weird, bruh.
2)Janes has not played MSG since Willie Clinton was being serviced by Monica.I think they canceled a New Years'eve 2003 show there with Marlyn Manson cuz nobody came. This will be a great opportunity for Mr. Carmen Electra to strut his tattoed stuff nearly buff in the big stage.

just reopen mccarren pool for this show.
Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:39 AM
Hey UN:art:IG, speaking of "underlying structures," YouTube is owned by Google. Just saying.
Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:41 AM
^^ and then?!
Posted by UN:art:IG | February 18, 2009 11:43 AM
unfornutate beer policy at ATP.....I seem to remember walking all around that place with my beer and going in and out of venues no problem
Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2009 11:57 AM
^ I'm just pointing out that at the end of the day, your link to your YouTube channel is making money for the exact same corporate structure. It's not the same scale, but it's the same basic premise. People make compromises to get their work out there, and at this point complaining about it is a little tiredanymore. NIN has done more to subvert the current corporate structure than most other bands of their position - it's not much, but it's something. And the way you dismiss it out of hand strikes me as a rather tired pose.

All Points West had the beer garden with no views of the stage and a limit of 5 drinks.
I'm sure, by comparison, All Tomorrow's Parties was probably a free-flowing, beer-for-all bacchanalia.

A:1159
my "and then" was more of a rethoric nature. naturally I cought your drift but didn't feel that it is really comparable, and I wasn't even thinking scale.
I have no problem with what you posted in 1159. This could actually lead to a very interesting discussion as the real life impact of NIN's actions over the last bunch of years are hard to measure and make for a fascinating bar/beer/whatever talk. Reznor started doing all this when NIN was a 'made' band, an established one that could easily continue to exist without the boundaries of a direct major label record deal. It's a bit of a stretch to shine a "NIN is the greatest DIY band ever" light on them just because of their recent activities. Nobody said the very same here or elsewhere but between the lines it is always implied. And that is what I find tirdsome.
I'm not here to pick a fight, let's be clear about that but NIN started out as a corporate rock act from the beginning. Do I care about that?! No, not really. I'm a corporate dickweed myself so how could I possibly hold it against someone else?! The fact though remains that Reznor wouldn't be who and where he is in 2009 with out the backing of a corporate structure. He is corporate rock's child who grew up and now rebels a little gainst mummy and daddy while still taking their 'allowances' and still drives their car, metaphoricly speaking. One is welcome to argue all that or call me whatever. All I'm saying is would I be in Reznor's shows I'd keep it a bit on the down and low in terms of anti corp rants when I'm still on the payroll, kind of...
NIN does not equal Fugazi, and with that I do also have no issues. But do NIN's actions really have an effect on new bands and their outlook on 'doing business' and thereby changing a few substiantial things? I dunno, you tell me :)

wow I guess the letter E and W are too close together on the keyboard... duh!

fuck Jones Beach
Posted by Anonymous | February 18, 2009 12:45 PM
I normally don't care for show's at the garden, but I saw NIN at MSG on the Fragile tour with A Perfect Circle and it is to this day one of the best show's i have ever attended and I don't even really care for nails quite as much as i used to.
But if this comes around I will be there where ever they fuckin' book it! I'm sort of hoping summer time, and our doors. that will make it all the more epic!

Ironically, I actually don't think we're very far apart on this stuff. Anyway, I agree, NIN isn't much of a model for bands starting out, but I'm glad an "established" act is out there experimenting with different ways of distributing their work. I'm not sure of what's going to come of it, but I think it's a good thing that someone with Reznor's resources is trying - if only because it calls attention to the fact that there are other channels out there. I admit it's a bit late in his career for this sudden DIY conversion (and I absolutely agree NIN is no Fugazi), but I still give him credit for the effort. He can afford to experiment with different models, and at the very least people can learn from those expereiments. It's not perfect, but nothing else is either. Whatever moves things forward.
And now, I've got to get back to my own corporate job.

I used to like UNatrIG until he came in here and made retarded points.

Whose payroll is he still on? He isn't on a major record label anymore. If you mean royalties, it's ridiculous to even suggest that someone stop receiving royalties for a body of work they created themselves throughout the years. If you have the problem with his touring, then how else would you like an act of the scale of Nine Inch Nails to put on a successful tour that caters to their thousands of fans? Nobody claimed NIN was the most DIY band out there, but they've taken effective steps to become independent in recent years.

Janes Addiction created and defined alternative rock? They sounded (and looked) like a glammed up sunset strip cock rock band.
The only thing that gave it any "alternative" flavour was the cat from Queens' psychedelic singing and lyrics. But the music is something Fred Durst listened to while writing "Nookie".

It's specifically going to be an outdoor venue tour, meaning Jones Beach, PNC, and Camden. MSG would work so there'd be a possibility but this bill is way too big to have club shows (unless you want to pay $150 a ticket) should be a great tour and Trent always says that he is going away, most likely he'll take a year or two off and be back in the new decade
