Sonic Youth

(album artwork features a painting by John Fahey)

Sonic Youth's 16th album, 'The Eternal', will be released on double vinyl, compact disc, and digital album by Matador Records on June 9. Produced by John Agnello and the band, 'The Eternal' not only marks Sonic Youth's return to the independent label sphere (titles on their own SYR label excepted) after a long association with Geffen, but more importantly, ranks as one of their more inspired efforts in a 28 year career.

Recorded through November and December of last year at the band's Echo Canyon West studio in Hoboken, NJ, 'The Eternal' features many firsts for a Sonic Youth album, including a number of shared vocals between Kim, Thurston, and Lee, and the studio debut of former Pavement/Dustdevils bassist Mark Ibold, a member of Sonic Youth's touring band for the past few years.

be prepared for short sets and venue being annoyed everytime someone calls to ask: "What time does Sonic Youth go on?"

ZZZZZZ

""be prepared for short sets and venue being annoyed everytime someone calls to ask: "What time does Sonic Youth go on?""

Also be prepared for the day after the show, when all the "fans" (aka they only own Daydream Nation) complain that SY played no songs, just noise. It is the NFF, they will perform only experimental stuff.

In the other post, people were already asking for the set times! Incredible. The show was (at the time) four months away, and they were already asking for the set times.

"In the other post, people were already asking for the set times! Incredible."

Well maybe not everyone who reads this blog was 20 in the 90s. I've lived in New York all my life, and have always listened to indie music, and had never heard of it before. At least the people who call have the foresight to spare themselves going to something they don't want to, while saving the tickets for those who do. I don't know what more you could ask. It doesn't say anything on the website about the format, which is why people are spamming BV's comments asking about it, and we're not fucking Miss Cleo over here.

Everytime SY puts out a cd these days someone or another insists that it's the best one they've done in years. Then I listen and it's just more of the same. Then again, not many bands give shout outs to Gregory Corso and Darby Crash in their song titles. Still love em live.

"we're not fucking Miss Cleo over here."

Dude, I wouldn't fuck Miss Cleo with *your* dick.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 1:26 AM

i went to the first no fun fest a few years ago at northsix when i was into this music...it was boring as all hell. the only decent set was by jim o'rourke, thurston, chris corsano and paul flaherty...

im gonna skip this because itll be the wank version of sonic youth.

and for anon 9:08, ive been a SY fan since i saw them in 1994 at the john giorno benefit...i was 13 years old...they were awesome.

and yes, daydream nation is their best album.

"Dude, I wouldn't fuck Miss Cleo with *your* dick."

No, you would do it with your mother's.

I hope everyone is cumming everywhere during this.

Good news indeed.

Posted by Big Perm | February 15, 2009 9:53 AM

Beth Ditto has posed nude for the cover of a magazine (Love) again.

MERZBOW!!

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 12:11 PM

"and have always listened to indie music,"

what is "indie music" exactly and what does it have to do with NFF?

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 12:36 PM

looks like twombly?....are you blind?

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 1:33 PM

Last year's no fun fest was amazing.

Posted by Lori | February 15, 2009 4:17 PM

i get the twombly reference as well, so chill out 1:33.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 5:50 PM

SY need to get back to putting out great music, not just ok music.

Posted by Anonymous | February 15, 2009 11:44 PM

They should call it No Music Fest, seeing as most of these bands will just leave they're guitars in front of they're amps, crank the volume to the max, and sit of they're keyboards. Boooorrrriiinnnnggg!

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 12:29 AM

I personally think Sonic Youth is the only band that's been around for as long as they have and still are making excellent albums. I don't care what anyone says, Sonic Nurse and Rather Rip are some of their best work.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 12:34 AM

i care what everyone says

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 12:40 AM

cant wait. i dont care what they play, watching them abuse their guitars is a treat.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 1:01 AM

"most of these bands will just leave they're guitars in front of they're amps, crank the volume to the max, and sit of they're keyboards."

Illiterate, but consistent.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 11:34 AM

looks like saturday is sold out

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 11:40 AM

1:33, obviously it's signed Fahey
but i said it looked like Twombly AT FIRST
like one of his many flowers on paper.
fuck off with your misguided sarcasm.

Posted by Anonymous | February 16, 2009 6:31 PM

as a rule, noise "music" is really bad. most of the noise shows i've seen involve "artists" who couldn't quite handle an instrument but who had discovered feedback and delay pedals...it's not hard to make.

SY is the notable exception. i love sonic youth but am not really interested in paying $25 to see them not play any songs. even watching them do their noise jams gets rather tiresome.

Posted by Sacred Absolute Hipster Cow | February 17, 2009 10:52 AM

wolf eyes at the hook a few years back was awesome.
sonic youth are at their best these days when they are droning and feeding back.
i wonder what kind of molten noise bardo pond has in store. should be good.

Don't forget Raionbashi and Kutzkalina, one of the most amazing, spine tingling 10 minutes in history of music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EewVSYFQmP8
