Randy Bewley

"Pylon guitarist Randy Bewley died this afternoon after suffering a heart attack while driving in an Athens neighborhood Monday.

Bewley was driving on Barber Street on Monday evening, and his van drifted off the road and tipped over, bandmate Vanessa Hay said in an e-mail to supporters.

Pylon is a band that never got its due. They were so, so great live.

Too bad. Randy was a great guitar player.

R.I.P. thanks for the music he inspired (from Sleater-Kinney to Deerhunter) as well as the music he played.

im not gonna lie, i have never heard of these guys. They're incredible.

Shit look at her dance and flail. Then look at her staring from post-band copy-machine-job-haze. Or maybe that's a meds-fog. Either way it makes me kinda sad. What a band. I need to go get their records.

sad... saw them in mercury lounge late 2007 - what a great show.

This is a very sad loss for the Athens community. Randy was a wonderful person. He will be sorely missed.

Im not gonna lie either, i never heard of these chaps, but they are good. all i can think of right now is this ill headbanger shit i dont even know how to describe it.

really awful news. i always thought of this band as being extremely efficient -- sound-wise, groove-wise ... even their name is efficient.

rip, randy

That's crazy. I was right outside downtown Athens when this happened and saw the rush of fire trucks and ambulances fly by. Sucks when people go too soon.

thank you for this BV,

a great photo and video, which serves as a nice homage to the spirit of pylon, and which i hope provides an intro for some into the music of this oft-overlooked band.

and f*ck p4k for their hollow little paragraph with sh*tty, microscopic thumbnail attached. they suck out loud.

Indie Rock truly lost a pioneer.

In Pylon's honor I cracked open a beer and danced my butt off to the music! Tragic, esp since his brother, Chris is now homeless. RIP

Pylon's the best dancing music ever written.

pylon is one of the best bands ever. even though r.e.m. became the most "successful" band out of late 70's/early 80's Athens scene, it always seemed like Pylon were the most influential, and the most beloved, especially among the other bands.

gonna put Gyrate on the record player in Randy's honor.

So sad...I loved Randy, insane about Pylon. Athens won't be the same.

I'm from Athens, GA -- But live in Brooklyn these days. . . and just found out about this--and I am so sad. I too, Will have a beer and listen to Pylon.

And while I don't mean this to sound crass -- Passing-away on Barber street in Athens, GA seems to me a very fitting departure.

My heart goes out to Randy's family.

I now feel extra lucky to have seen Pylon play the WNYU show at the Knitting Factory in December.

A great loss. RIP.
